View Full Version : Lehmann's smoking

I knew Boof smoked, but was shocked to see him puffing away as he sat in the stands with the pads on, ready to come into bat.

Given his age, lack of aerobic fitness and position (battling to get back), i'd think he'd be doing absolutely everything possible to ensure that his fitness is at it's peak.

The likes of Dougie Walters would have been wrapped :)

i agree that he really shouldnt be smoking...but u gotta admit it was funny...... u could even hear tubby laughing away from his microphone!!!!!!

in fact, it was so funny...they even showed him a couple of times takin puffs, with no comments at all...just silence

And did you see him running - puffing and panting like an old man. At one stage after a quick single he had to stop, put his hands on his knees and get himself together - I thought he was going to keel over.

The hot, hot grounds of the sub-continent beckon.

If it was Warnie it would have been on the front page of every newspaper in the country the next day.

No big deal, so he smokes during the game. Cricket is not exacxtly a game that demands you be a fitness freak. Some of the best players to ever play the game struggled to get out of bed in the morning they were that unfit.

it is dissapointing.
boof is a top cricketer and well loved (same as warne) but smoking by these 'heroes' sets a poor example for the kids.

It is dissappointing, but that shouldn't be an inhibitor for his selection if he performs.

I couldn't care less about him smoking during a game.

My point was moreso about his overall fitness. He is already overweight and recovering from an injury, he is also attempting to gain selection for an arduous tour of Sri Lanka.

Surely he would be taking every opportunity to improve his fitness at this stage.

Smoking isn't such a big deal, his fitness is.

If a bloke doesn't have the desire to be at his physical peak for such a tough tour, they really shouldn't be considered for selection.

Even Warne, who has a long history of weight issues and smoking, has got himself quite fit for the tour of Sri Lanka.

So what has the smoking got to do with it phat?..Warnie still smokes and he is in super shape.

Then why put smoking in the title of this thread?

I think more often than not, smoking would lead to general unfitness. It certainly affects the lungs and breathing for one.

I think this is what Phat is getting at.

Self explanitory.

The point of the thread was my surprise that he is still smoking when he is attempting to prove his fitness.

Because that's what he was doing.

My entire point is about him still smoking when trying to prove his fitness to selectors.

His smoking on match day is an entirely different issue.

Who said he was overweight?

He got injured doing training and was in the best shape of his life

not everyone looks like Bruce Reid you know no matter how fit they are.

Boof has never had any great injuries, the achilles one last year might've been his first ever major mishap, but he's been like this for many years, and had been scoring runs, so you don't see anything wrong with it.

Are you honestly saying that he isn't carrying even an ounce of excess weight?

I understand he has a body like Shrek, but even still, he could stand to tighten up a little.

a) he's getting on in years

b) he's trying to overcome a debilitating injury.

Those two factors dicatate that he should be doing everything possible to reach peak aerobic fitness.

Cricket Australia must launch an investigation immediately!

He's fat, not going to play for OZ ever again, plus he's from Adelaide for crying out loud. He's got virtually nothing to live for so let him have his darb.

While cricket does not require a great deal of fitness, I am surprised that players of Lehmann and Warne's ability and talent do smoke. I have no problems with Boof doing it at the ground- it is his choice, even if it sets a bad example.

We have to ask- how many cricketers these days actually smoke? (say at first class levels here and the Australian sides)

Is it true that when he goes out to bat he says to his team mates "Don't put out my fag,I'll be back in a minute" ? ;)

Yep, Warnie tried to quit but couldn't, he was trying to quit in a much publicised event when nicotte (whatever the spelling) gum company offered Warnie a sponsership and help him quit, Warne kept chewing the gum, but it's only a matter of days before the newspaper headlines have a big shot of Warnie smoking

Certainly wouldn't look good if he gets run out by a couple of inches in a game or struggles to get to a catch.

He sure is, seen it with my own eyes at the G before.

Makes me wonder why Average Joe has to go out the back for a smoke while players like Warne, Lehmann, Harvey, Slater, Funky Miller etc can stand in the players race having a fag before they bat.
