Now Dean Jones, I have nothing against the guy.
But he could quite possibly be the worst commentator to grace the airwaves.
Firstly he sometimes tries to be funny and yet to succeed on that front.
Secondly, makes ridiculous statements. Like just then which rompted me to write this thread about the Ponting bit of fielding, being the best bit of fieldinng he's ever seen.
Thirdly, he doesn't watch the game properly. Finding an example would be the other night when a ball landed about 20 metres in front of point and he thought it was caught then said it landed just in front of the fieldsman.
Absolutely unbearable, listening to him. I can't really think of a worse commentator unfortunately I think we're stuck with him for the rest of the tour.

Don't care for Deano the person, but i enjoy his commentary.
Unlike the drones on Channel 9, he speaks his mind.

He does speak his mind, but I think he's trying to hard to be someone he's not in the commentary box.
He tries to be witty a trait in which he quite obviously doesn't possess. Hookesy on the other hand had that wit and was just himself in the box. Commentators must stick to there strengths as well, Deano doesn't seem to be doing that at the moment.

now i've only watched this match in patches, but did he make reference to the guy backing up at the non-strikers end having his feet in the crease when the ball was bowled as opposed to having the bat extended at arm's length?
If this is the case, Deano has a short memory. He used to do exactly the same thing. Infact one time Curtly Ambrose pulled up in his final stride because he thought deano was false starting, turns out he was backing up with the bat in the right hand, and feet planted in the crease in the last over of the innings no less.
though you couldnt take much away from his running in general, very quick.

Loved his Michelle Pheiffer (or however you spell her name) line.

He has never been one to hold back on the comments which explains why he didn't play more cricket for Australia

Don't have pay tv myself, but I was very disappointed when he left the ABC.

I think he made an example of something that happened on ONE ball, and made it sound like the Sri Lankans had been doing it all day - at least that's how it looked to me.
The ball that was replayed when Jones commented on it, the non-striker (Jayasuriya, from memory) was adjusting some of his protective equipment when the bowler was running in. Admittedly a poor time to choose to do it, but it was the only time I noticed any huge problem in backing up.

He also had a go at Hogg in the first match for something similar (he did have a point though).

He was adamant that Hogg should have gone for a second run in the last over to get Symonds back on strike, even though he conceded it was dead set suicidal...

It wouldn't have been suicidal had Hogg backed up properly though.
Hogg hadn't left his crease when the shot was played.

He keeps refering to players as "Mr".
His best commentary is done during the change of overs. You can hear him yacking away to his co-commentator.

Very True.
Like in today's match during the change over of the over, you could hear him asking someone how to say 'Chandana', low and behold as soon as he thought he could be heard again the first or second word out of his mouth was the properly pronounced Chandana.
Perhaps, things like name pronounciations should be done at the beginning of the seris, to avoid any confusion.

Nah, Deano commentates like his personality, he's extremely up himself and all his life he raves on around his cricket abilities. That's why he'd say "shocking ball", "horrible shot", "stupid fielding", coz he'd just now and again slip a line in and say, "Back when I was playing I would've done whole lot better". Self indulgent is Deano, but he's a funny bloke :)

I had a chuckle reading this post, it bring back memories. I played against Dean Jones when he was in the Carlton 3rds at only 14 years of age. He was playing against adults but arrogant even then!!!! Yes, he's up himself, but you have to love it :)

True, it would only have been half suicidal. Never a second run in that one.
He is taking on Bill Lawries traits of expecting the batsmen to run two whenever it goes outside teh circle
If Bill and Deno batted the way they commentate they would have been run out every innings.
Dont mind Deano though as we share the same birthday, ten years apart.
