View Full Version : Hogg for the test squad?

Three specialist spinners - what are your thoughts? The possibility has been thrown out there, and I think Ponting mentioned it too.

George isnt quite up to test standard (for Australia anyway) but you cant deny that these are spinners wickets, and I really wonder if he would do a better job than Williams or Lee. In his favour: he spins it in the opposite direction to our other spinning options, plus he's been decent in the one dayers so far. Against him: well, hes not even in the squad.

Given the way the Lankans have capitulated to spin so far, it wouldnt be a backwards step, but the Aussies are reluctant to play two specialist spinners, let alone three.

Georgie Hogg sucks at 4 day games, as his first class record shows, please don't pick him on his One Day form, that would be a disgrace...

I like the content of this thread, very healthy debate which has some merit.

However, I am going to nominate the title for the stupidest title for a thread in Bigfooty history. It may not win, but, it will certainly finish in the top 3!

Come on, thats a bit harsh. Any marks for originality?

Don't like the thread title. I thought Germany had been given Test status and would be playing three Tests here next year.

Ah, I tried to change the title but I guess you cant.

Sorry people, we'll all have to be a little open minded for now with this one. Just think laterally.

If they pick Hoggy on his bowling form, then they dhould pick Clarke as well!! (Like they should have anyway). They don't need three specialists, already have Warne and MacGill, then have the likes of Lehmann and Katich. Who are both better than Hoggy, he got lucky the other nite anyway!!

Indeed.

I remember once upon a time when selecting the one-day team they just picked the test team plus dean jones.

It's turning into the other way around these days.

No real problems with Hogg being added as an extra to the squad, but playing 3 specialist spinners in a Test match would be overkill when you will also have Katich & Lehmann as part-time options (& also Symonds if Martyn flunks the 1st test). He may get a game if Warne & MacGill don't gell (again) & MacGill gets the arse.

Three spinners in one match is overkill. Hogg should be included as Warne and Macgill are too much alike.

Katich is a better Test bowler than Hogg

Oh please.

Would you say that if he hadn't taken 6-for against Zimbabwe.

Simply look at Katich's first class bowling record, and compare it with Hogg's. No competition.
