THE SANFL has posted a record profit from last season – $4,769,510 and handed $4,252,600 back to the nine league clubs.
SANFL president Rod Payze, chairing his first league annual meeting, last night presented the most healthy balance sheet and yearly operating statement in the league's 126-year history.
The SANFL's financial strength was achieved against AFL funding cutbacks which forced a major review of the domestic league's budgets.
The SANFL annual report also acknowledged its two AFL licences, held by the Crows and Power, generated a record $63.9 million last year. This financial soundness was reflected with the re-election, on three-year terms, of independent SA Football Commission members David Shipway and Jamie Coppins.
Payze also announced SANFL life membership for three long-serving administrators – country leagues director Don McSweeny, Norwood official Ron Champness, who has served the Redlegs since 1981, and SANFL tribunal commissioner Chris Patterson, who this year will counsel league players on drug use.

Actually it wasn't a record as first reported, the SANFL made a record $5913798 in 1997.
Just for comparison with this latest profit 472k will go back to each of the 9 SANFL clubs, last year it was 408k and the year before 440k.

How does that compare to Pre- Crows days Wedgie?
I imagine the Clubs made more profit and the SANFL less profit.

I'd say the league AND the clubs are financially better off these days. Individually, the clubs would have been making good profits leading up to the 80's but once players started wanting reasonable money, the situation soon changed. People forget that Port were nearly broke in the early 80's.

Not sure with inflation, etc but you'd imagine the SANFL would have a lot less major sponsors and tv payments etc these days.
Mind you to argue against points Ive made before I'd definately agree clubs as a whole are better off now and the future is looking very bright. At the minute 6 out of the 9 clubs are assured of a very profitable future where I'd say this number would have been a lot less in the late 80s.
Clubs like North, Centrals, West, etc made profits (and have assets) last year that a lot of AFL clubs would have been happy with.
I'll eat a bit of humble pie on this front. Go the Crows and Power!;)

Just to add, the evil that is pokies may have as much to do if not moreso than the 2 AFL clubs when it comes to finances. It's no coincidence the 3 clubs in the most strife are the 3 clubs with minimal / no pokie income.

Indeed. That is such a shame but once you start becoming reliant on the income it is very hard to go back.

It might be a few yrs away but if all SANFL clubs had some solid pokie income in a few yrs time then the AFL could cut it's grants all they want. With 9 clubs in solid positions the salary cap could even creep up a thousand or 2(or 40 or 50!)

The cutting of the AFL grants is directly proportional to the salary cap in the SANFL. So I doubt it will go up.
