Yesterday I received (imported from the States) one of my all-time favourite films on DVD, BELLE DE JOUR. A masterpiece from one from the great Director's, Luis Bunuel, and starring one of the great cinematic beauties, Catherine Deneuve, at the peek of her of powers.
It is about a bored and frigid wife who has these bizarre sexual fantasies, but has no outlet to experiment as her husband is very straight laced. She hears about other women who "entertain" men in high class establishments while their husbands are at work. She goes to work in one of the establishments, and finds while the requests of the men are getting more bizarre, her own fantasies are becoming more normal.
Everytime I watch this film I left with one question. In one scene a Japanese business comes to the apartment with a wooden box. When he opens the box, you hear a buzzing sound, like there is a bug inside. The other women are turned off by this and go screaming from the room, but Catherine Deneuve although looks a little apprehensive stays jmuch to the Japanese businessmens pleasure. The next scene shows the Japanese businessmen whistling and laughing as he leaves the apartment, while Deneuve is on top of the bed with the biggest grin on her face. She has never look so content in her life.
