Richo bags seven against Lions

After leading by as much as six goals during the third term, the Tigers were overhauled by the Brisbane Lions in their Wizard Regional Challenge match at Coorparoo Saturday night.

Matthew Richardson looked like spoiling the party as he inspired Richmond before the Lions lifted their intensity to come home with a wet sail in the final term to win 13.9 (87) to 11.12 (78).

‘Richo’ was unstoppable in the first half as he devoured everything that came his way, bagging five goals, proving too strong for Lions defender Daniel Bradshaw. Regular full-back Mal Michael missed the contest due to the flu.

However Richardson blotted his copybook by missing several chances including the opportunity in the third quarter to send the Tigers 40 points clear.

Richmond coach Danny Frawley was pleased with the renewed effort from his side after last week’s showing against St.Kilda and was not prepared to blame his spearhead over his untimely misses.

“Our morale has really been good – we were disappointed with our performance last week so we wanted to make sure we gave a good account of ourselves early,” Frawley said after the match.

“We can only control what we can control – not what happens outside the inner sanctum.”

“He (Richardson) has got to play a little closer to goal and he presented well in the right spots. We have just got share the workload up there,

“We just keep working on it (his consistency). This is only his second game where some guys have played four.

“We made quite a few mistakes out there so I don’t think you can blame one individual for our performance.”

The eagerly-awaited return of Lions captain Michael Voss and his counterpart Wayne Campbell never really achieved great heights as both played low-key roles.

Voss started on the backline playing on livewire forward Andrew Krakouer.

Campbell was given a rest for the second half but was the instigator of many Tiger forays during the first two terms. He was closely shadowed by Lions tagger Robert Copeland and Frawley expects to give his skipper more game time next week.

Besides the ill Michael, the Lions rested premiership stars Nigel Lappin, Shaun Hart and Darryl White. Youngster Richard Hadley also missed the match with a wrist problem.

Lions coach Leigh Matthews said his side treated the game as a practice match at the start but asked his charges for more effort after half time.

“Richmond competed harder because they had a bit of pride to restore after having a torrid week,” Matthews commented after the game.

“Until we matched that we were always going to be behind.”

Next week Richmond take on Carlton at Optus Oval and the Lions venture to Melbourne to play the Western Bulldogs at Whitten Oval.

Lions roar against Richmond
06 March 2004 Sunday Herald Sun
By Chris Herde of AAP

THE Brisbane Lions completed a last half fightback to defeat Richmond by nine points in their Wizard Regional Challenge AFL practice clash at Coorparoo.

In front of 3,500 fans the Lions kicked eight last half goals to two to win 13.9 (87) to 11.12 (78).

Importantly for both teams all members of the 26 man squads appeared to escape the match without injury.

For the Lions, captain Michael Voss had his first run for the season and made a solid contribution in the backline after overcoming knee problems.

For Richmond, full forward Matthew Richardson kicked seven goals but should have had more, booting four points and three out on the full.

Richmond has had a tough week with Tigers premiership coach and former director Tony Jewell criticising current coach Danny Frawley.

The Tigers - through Richardson, who had five goals at half-time - took a 28 point lead into the big break.

With a better brand of direct football, Richmond - with Andrew Kellaway floating around the ground and Brad Ottens in ruck - managed to give Richardson every opportunity to out-muscle a smaller and lighter Daniel Bradshaw.

Mark Coughlan also managed to shut down the effectiveness of 2003 Norm Smith medallist Simon Black who in the second half threw off the shackles to star for the Lions.

Rising star Jarred Brennan continued his good pre-season form at centre half back while injury prone Brisbane teammate - ruckman Clark Keating - signalled he was back to full fitness.

Brisbane coach Leigh Matthews said he was happy the way his team fought back against a fired-up Richmond.

"I think it was the competitive urge really later in the game," Matthews said.

"Richmond has had a bit of a torrid week off the field and had a bad game on Sunday night so I think they came up here to restore pride."

Frawley said his players wanted to give a good account of themselves and he was pleased with their first half.

He said in the second half it was important to run some of his less experienced players.

Frawley said despite the loss he was pleased with his team's performance and believed they were at a better stage at this time of the year than in 2003.

"We had a very good structure in place and we wanted to make sure early we gave a good account of ourselves," Frawley said.

That's our Richo ;) :D

Good to hear we played some direct footy after last week.
Frawley said his players wanted to give a good account of themselves and he was pleased with their first half.

He said in the second half it was important to run some of his less experienced players.
That would explain the drop off in the second half. Just shows how important Cambo is to us. Glad to hear Cogs was named as one of our best also.

What they fail to say is that at least 2 goals were very close misses. Pettifer as one of Richmond's best was a joke. Tommy Roach is a gun - very very impressive - could teach some others a thing or 2. Tim Fleming seem to have hurt his foot and spent the second half on the bench. When he did play he was in the thick of everything. Ottens, Gas and Campbo all spent the second half on the bench with Gas having his left thigh strapped. Funny to see Zantuck giving it to Acker! To allow the Lions to hit the front by the middle of the last quarter is disgraceful - Voss and Acker weren't even playing then.

First quarter saw Richo and Browny in the forward pocket and then Browny went to the midfield and Krakouer played forward. Why Spud didn't stick with this but in the second half persisted with Pettifer and Morrison up front is beyond me.

Skills went from bad to worse in the second half. Silly turnovers, especially from kick-ins cost us. A bad handball from Fiora earnt him a big spray from supporters.

We should have easily won this game. And yet somehow I wasn't altogether surprised that Brisbane stepped up a notch in the last quarter. Very unfair to blame Richo. Bowden was a bit quiet. Shane Tuck did ok.

Bowden -FLMFAFOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Do yourselves a favor and forget about him.
The absolute epitomy of soft dudmeister.

What a joke and one of the reasons we are where we are today.
Content to play for himself and take the fringe benefits but
too scared to get a hard ball - not to mention his turn-over rate.

I ****en hate this prick.

Hey Julz,:D
Did u go to the game?
Can u tell us a bit more about Tekno Roach ?

Yes Oxx I went to the game. Young Roachy - he's going to be one hell of an exciting player. Just needs to hit a few more targets. Very quick though. Goes for everything as well (take note Pettifer - ya girl)

More direct in the first half than the second. Crikey wrenny - talk about putting pressure on an old bag. Pity you're banned from PRE - Bristiger did a fairly concise report on each player. Weller got some boos from the Lions supporters in the second half - didn't see him in the first half. Morrison looked a little loss. Tuck appeared in the second half and seemed useful. Stafford was on and off the bench. I thought Tivers was lacking a bit. Browny was better once he got in the midfield. Gaspar was on the bench in the second half. Actually the Lions could have won by more if Hall hadn't have touched the ball as it was going goalwise. Roachy is very impressive, fast, in the thick of things - someone to keep an eye on.

The goals were scored when a player put foot to ball and kicked it through the big sticks:D Honestly its hard following the game when your binoculars are constantly focused on one player;) Seriously Richo was on song and there were a couple of non-goals that were just misses (even with the binoculars) although he did miss an easy one and sprayed another.

Hard to go past the fact that Leigh was telling it how it was though Ghost.
This point hadn't been raised otb and, imo,is as valid (or more)
as anything Frawley has to say.
Why have our supporters deluded as to the real reason we lost.
I saw Leighs comments as disturbing considering we fielded our
best available team (and they say its only the wizza cup)

And you're a friggin disgrace. [/B]

Thanks Ghost,
I try my hardest !!!
I dont blame you for thinking so, i ask for it.

It's better than bending over every week and touching your toes.

Im sick of us having to renew our faith year after year
in this heartless jerk-off. If he was the pizza delivery boy
you'd starve to death.

What a complete waste of space.

Hope he has a great season so u can crucify me,nothing would make me happier, honestly,I'll even supply the cross:D

That may be true or an excuse. Who knows. We had Otto, Gas and Cambo sitting the second half out so it's not as though we treated the game anymore than a practice match as well. These matches are mickey mouse games.

What matters is that we were competitive, and the players were out to restore some pride.

What upset me against the Saints last week was that the Saints were harder at the ball, and some of our players played as if they thought they were above it all.

There is no excuse in AFL footy for a lack of intensity. If they had a go against the Lions, then good on em.

I had to leave at half time due to other commitments. What I saw I liked. Richo getting some quality delivery for a change and was good with his conversions. They didn't seem to be as panicky with the more direct approach to goal. Also commitment from most was good - going at the ball hard, not being overshadowed by the lions. A good effort after the previous debacle against the saints.

Good to see lots of yellow & black at the ground.
