Is someone able to explain what the difference between these awards and the "State Player of the Year" Award that is given at the Allan Border Medal night?

Seems stupid that there are two awards covering this....

The SA must be a joke one,
like the razzies...

you know, team most likely to grow up in a mental institution, or the team that has the players that look the most like over the hill US action actors and the like...

aside from choke with 2 overs to go, and be generally slaughtered by everyone, exactly why did the SA get this award?

jeez what a frikken pointless award.

I hope your not knocking the prestige associated with winning a coaches award. I think i might have one or two of them lying around somewhere. Next to my "Best Utility" award!!;) :D

The spirit of cricket award is voted on by umpires, based on the 'spirit' shown by teams in all ING and pura cup games. I think they can even have points deducted for poor behavior or fines. So its not a token trophy at all (though its fun to make like it is just cause its SA :D)

Maybe that is why they got the award....because they kept playing even though they knew they weren't any good....

They should have split it between both competitions if this was the case...Tassie would have won for the ING cup then!

No not at all!... Ive had one myself in the past too. All I was saying is that SA really put in a good effort this year, really tried their best. :p

The spirit of cricket award, I believe, is being run in all Cricket Australia affiliated grade competitions as well. Our club was faring quite well, but for some late season misdemeanors by a couple of bogan players who managed to infiltrate our teams.

the thing is SA AREN"T a crap side, they missed out on 6 pointers about 4 times by an ants nose from memory, if they'd held their collect nerves they'd be in the finals, and the number of times they narrowly lost ING games they had in the bag...

IS that the spirit they really want to foist around Australia?

really SA SHOULD have won, the award for the 'team most like the brits'

I must admit I am a little surprised that Elliot was the Pura Cup player of the year. I thought Murray Goodwin had scored the most number of runs in the season.

Both Victorians deserve thier awards.

Goodwin scored 12 more runs, however Elliott made 2 more centuries and averaged some 8 runs more.

Taking all that into account, along with the fact that the Vics went unbeaten whilst WA struggled, is more than enough to justify Elliott's award.

Surprised that Goodwin didn't finish second though.

Victoria's two batting powerhouses Matthew Elliott and Brad Hodge have won Australia's two major state cricket awards, the Pura Cup Player of the Year and the ING Cup Player of the Year.

Their career-best domestic seasons were recognised at the inaugural Cricket Australia state cricket awards, featuring guest of honor Richie Benaud, in Melbourne.

Victoria Spirit captain Belinda Clark completed a treble for Victoria by being recognised as the outstanding women's cricketer of the WNCL series.

All were chuffed with their awards. For Elliott it was his third Cricketer of the Year award and comes with him eyeing Graham Yallop's alltime season record of just over 1400 runs.

He beat teammate David Hussey with Stuart Law (Queensland) third.

Elliott said he'd been lucky this summer... "ever since Wade Seccombe dropped a skier in the opening game (in Brisbane) I've had more luck than normal," he said.

With in excess of 1000 runs each and almost 20 centuries combined in both competitions, Elliott and Hodge were instrumental in helping Victoria finish a clear leader in the Pura Cup and into third place on the ING Cup ladder.

Hodge said he hoped his rich burst of form could continue in the final and that others, too, could also contribute to help the Bushrangers to their first title since 1990-91.

Elliott was second with WA's Michael Hussey third.

"That's what we are all playing for, to win the title," Hodge said. "We all hope as many Victorians as possible come out to support us from Friday."

Victorian captain Darren Berry says he was thrilled for the pair, who have been batting mainstays all summer.

"They're both quality players and have been magnificent for us all summer," he said
