At half time, from Newcastle #1 Oval:

Essendon 5.5.35
Sydney 9.9.63

Goalkickers thus far: Bradley 2, Rioli, Cartledge, Haynes

From what I gather, Sydney is pretty much playing a full strength side, while we are far from it, so the result shouldn't be a big deal, although it looks a bit bleak at the moment.

Apparently this is a small ground (a la SCG), so I guess having only five goals on the board at half time is a bit of a worry, even if it's a practice match.

Dean Rioli went off with a shin injury late in the second quarter. Severity not known at this point.

We were really mauled in the second quarter, but played pretty much all youth. Fletcher and JJ were on the bench most of that time.

Bradley is spending some time at full forward and seems to be doing alright.

Welsh kicked the last one for Essendon. Third quarter seems to have been all about the W's.

3QT.

Essendon 8.7.55
Sydney 13.11.89

Swans starting to run away with it.

Barry Hall has 4 goals for the Swans; the rest are all singles divided among 9 players.

Fletcher missed a sitter that would have brought the margin back to 11. Hope we get rid of this inaccuracy. Sydney then kicked the last two to blow the margin back out.

Cupido played most of the third quarter on a HF flank.

Early 4th quarter, margin getting out of hand.

Essendon 8.7.55
Sydney 16.11.107

Hall's kicked two more goals; now he's got 6. Don't know what Sydney are trying to prove by beating up on what is basically a VFL side.

Roos said he was going to treat this as a round 1 match no matter who played or didnt.

Attended the game as unbiased spectator (Collingwood supporter).

Barry Hall did as he pleased. Goodes likewise.

Swans won pretty comfortably but Essendon had several players out and were interchanging the likes of Fletcher.

For the Dons, Haynes was impressive and i think Cartledge will be a player.

The thing that most impressed me about him was during the third quarter when Barry Hall pushed and shoved the kid. He stood his ground - was not intimidated and shoved Hall back. I reckon it would have brought a smile to the faces of Sheedy, Harvey and co.

Othe rplayers that stood out for mine were McPhee- really like the way he plays and Welsh is a tough little bloke for his size.
