I'd say the two favourites would be victoria and queensland.
victoria will have to repeat their performance, hodge and elliot are the class in the batting line up, but will need to get moss, mott, arnie, white, and that kid hussey to repeat their 2003 performance.
in the bowling stocks, unless there are serious off season changes, Victoria's bowling has been good for a decade now, its been the batting letting us down, inness, lewis are proven horses, and mcdonald, wise moss's trundlers and white's legspin certainly add the depth and flexibility to the side.
the Middle order is still vulnerable, despite some good performances.
Queensland
fabulous batting line up but stuart law will be missed badly, a genuine batting star and solid bowler. love and maher still heapum class. Add an ageing but effect bichs, and backed up by noffke, queensland will be in the top 3 next season also.
Tassie build their side around there batsmen as they don't seem to have any ability to bowl a side out often enough, cox, devo, marsh and watson prove to be a solid and gutsy batting line up.
should also be in the top 3
SA with siddons gone, lehmann performing national duties too much is left for bluewitt to do with the batting. Rofe and tait are two good bowlers, but see them off, and its practice time. could win more games in 2004/5 but should be 4th
WA nothing to look forward to. michael hussey and north - good batsman, but martyn and gilly will be in the national side.
can they bowl out sides twice? I don't think so.
NSW will compete with WA for last place. McGrath and lee will have national duties, as will katich, mcgill and wonderboy will share drinks duties, bevan will slaugher most attacks. NSW to compete with WA for last place.
Tassie minus an interstate Watson and a retired (possibly) Cox will not make the top 3. Damien Wright is not getting any younger, and may well have just experienced his peak at first class level.
Promising signs include the breakthrough year in 03/04 for Dighton, and Xavier Doherty coming along nicely.

Rebacks through Cosgove Ferguson, Cameron Flower and Blewett will finally click with the batting and added to their formidable pace bowlers of Rofe Clearly and Tait backed up by Ryan Harris and young speedster Trent Kelly will take all before them. The handy debuts of young spinners Bailey and Cullen also provides a nice suprise.
Chris Hartley's defection from QLd was also a key factor.
Redbacks win comp in a canter.
or more likely
Redbacks average again and finish bottom.

Also, have Goodwin, Rogers & Campbell (& Langer when the ODI's are on). They probably have the best batting line-up.

Heard specualtion about the WA's possibly going after Matthew Inness to headline their bowling attack. Would be a handy pick up.

Martyn and Gilly havent been regulars for so long they dont really count anymore.
We'll be better next year dan - there is no way we'll be finishing bottom. :)
Hussey, North, Rogers, Goodwin, Langer (when he plays) are all top shelf first class batsmen. Good backup from Campbell and Mueleman, plus consistent all rounders Hogg, Harvey and now Wates (well, his batting has improved out of sight).
Bowling obviously still a problem, but Williams will probably play more state cricket as he seems to have been squeezed down the international pecking order for no apparent reason. Michael Clarke is due back, Ben Edmondson could easily take 30 wickets for the year and Beau Casson likewise. Plus the all rounders as mentioned.
This year we were, literally, an over here or a couple of runs there from the final. So no, dont think we'll be finishing bottom. That is really reserved for SA for one more season at least.
I actually wouldnt be surprised if we're challenging for the final. NSW and Tassie dont do much at all for me. QLD will be solid again, but without Law who had an exceptional season this year.
If we take our form of the last 4 games of the year into next season, we'll be right up there.

Season 2004 / 2005
VICTORIA
For
- strong batting line-up
- huge depth in bowling
Against
- aging batting line-up
- possible international call-ups for up to 1/2 a dozen players.
- possible let-down with some younger players.
- question mark over batting depth.
QUEENSLAND
For
- solid batting line-up
- strong bowling line-up
Against
- aging bowlers
- loss of Law will leave a hole in batting and leadership not easily filled.
- Often lose key performers to international duty.
WESTERN AUSTRALIA
For
- strong batting, unlikely to be weakened by intenational duties (outside of Langer/Martyn/Gilchrist).
Against
- question mark over bowling depth and quality.
TASMANIA
For
- solid bowling line-up.
Against
- inconsistent batting.
- possible retirement of Cox and defection of Watson will severely weaken a brittle batting line-up.
NEW SOUTH WALES
For
- Always competitive.
- some strong performers with bat and ball.
Against
- Loss of Waughs will make a difference.
- Question over depth.
- Perrenial issue of National duties. All star performers will spend time with Australia (Katich, Clarke, Bevan, MacGill, McGrath, Lee).
SOUTH AUSTRALIA
For
- Top-quality bowling line-up.
Against
- Inconsistent batting
- question on depth - if Cleary / Tait / Rofe get call ups, who's left?
- transition year?
That's also my ladder order, by the way.

 Perish the thought. Most likelies based on this year are Hodge and Elliott, but sadly I feel it will never happen.:(
Perhaps White as the most likely, but not for a while yet.

Why have this thread one day after this season has just finsished? Teams are going to recruit new players, injuries will happen etc so i don't see how everyone already has predicted how the teams will go.

Why have a cricket board at all during the off season?

That's just the one name, Dave. If struck by injury and call-ups, dou you have more than the one useful replacement?
Too many variables, and too early to tell.
Who could honesly say they picked the Vics to win the Cup before last years comp?
And for those that said yes, who honestly picked Alan Wise to become one of the most important bowlers in the state?
Gotta love cricket for that exact reason!
