Interesting to hear Boof have a dip at the Sri Lankans overnight about 7-2 fields and generally defensive tactics.

Didn't Steve Waugh often employ the 7-2 field, to restrict free scorers?

Anyway, that's an aside. Wanted to know what we think about 7-2 fields.

I've never been a fan. They require bowlers to be able to land it on a perfect line, whilst it makes it very difficult to get a wicket if the batsman has any self control.

Your thoughts on 7-2 fields?

They've worked exceptionally well for McGrath, but you'd never use one for Bing.

Steve Waugh was a bit dumb with 7-2, he thinks coz it worked with Glenn McGrath it'd work for every other fast bowler, so he gave it to Dizzy and Bing, sometimes Dizzy bowls too wide on off stump with the new ball when he could've done what he likes: pitch it up on off stump and draw a stroke. As of Bing, why would you want someone bowling at 150 kph to be bowling wide of off? Should be bowling straight all the time

Generally agree with everything said on this thread so far. 7-2 are fine and dandy for a robot like McGrath, but someone like Dizzy or Bing it doesn't necessarilly suit. Also, if a batsman has any discipline at all, they can just leave every McGrath ball outside off, and force the change in field that way. It's amazing how many wickets McGrath has got by batsman just wafting outside off stump.

When i open the bowling my personal preference is for a 7-2 field at least for the first 4 or so overs.

Provided you bowl a decent line, you should get 4 pretty tight overs to begin with, which is the sorta start i like.

It depends on the situation as to whether a 7-2 field is attacking or defensive.

you can bowl 1.5 foot outside the off, with 2 slips, a gully, point, deep point, extra cover and a mid off. but that is real negative cricket and something i'm not a fan off.

I like to open up with 2 slips, a man in between 3rd and 4th, a gully, forward point, cover (short or regulation depending on how confident i feel) and a mid off. On the on side either i'll have a fine leg and mid wicket, or i'll have a forward square leg and a widish mid on. Try and get it around half a foot outside off and tempt the batsmen to play across the line early on and look for catches behind the stumps. IMO that is pretty attacking cricket cause theres gaps everywhere for the batsmen, but if you bowl well he shouldn't be able to find them.........
