Thoroughly disappointed.
Who made this decision? Gilly? Buchannon?

The non-use of a nightwatchman was a Steve Waugh era policy. Maybe Punter has a different tack on the issue. It never backfired on Waugh, so i can't say there was a great case for the return of the nightwatchman.
i doubt it would have been gillys decision and Milenko is right, maybe its something ponting has decided to take with him
was very disappointing tho, maybe martyn didn't want to go out or something

yea i'm not a fan of night watchman.
I've just always thought that a batsmen is much more likely to be able to see out the final overs, rather than a tail ender

i dont mind it - probably because i like watching the tailenders battling it out in a long innings, but i dont think its good for the team.
Gillespie prevented another batsman from coming out to face the music on day three. So as far as the tactic goes, it was a success.
That said, I'm not a fan of nightwatchmen either.

Don't like the night watchman. Never have, never will. All it really achieves is to stuff up the batting order.
The moment Dizzy walked out the other night he was no longer a tailender, he was batting at Number 4. Therefore, not only is he expected to survive the evening, he is also expected to get on with it the next day and score runs.
I would only support the night watchman if he was an accomplished all-rounder who usually bats 7-8 but has the ability to do well if pushed up the order.
I would guess the failure rate of the night watchman would be well into 90% bracket, and yet the captains still think it's a good idea.
