I saw this on the FoxSports site that he'll look at chucking it in after the Kiwis tour to England.
Saw this guy a few times at full throttle, and he was (is) one of a few players worth shelling out for at his best. Injuries robbed the Kiwis of one of the few top-shelf allrounders in it (maybe only Kallis now), and he was a pretty good guy to boot if the interview Ch9 did of him when they were last here is anything to go by.
Oh well, age and injury catch up with us all in some shape or form...
There was plenty of talk before the last Test against South Africa that he was set to retire then. Shame to see him go, when and if he calls it a day.
Well, there you go. Confirmation...
Cairns to retire from Test cricket (http://aus.cricinfo.com/db/ARCHIVE/CRICKET_NEWS/2004/APR/116772_NZ-WCI_05APR2004.html)
You know the world is in a bad way when blokes retire from Test Cricket in order to prolong their One Day International career.
Sad.

I agree. Talk about taking the soft option.

Chris Cairns is a big sook, if he gets hit around a bit he feigns an injury so he can get taken off. Is something of a liability in Test cricket and is best suited to the pyjama game where his big hitting can sometimes swing a game.
Overall, a waste of talent who needs a bit more heart.
I always liked Chris Cairns (obviously unlike m'learned friend above:D), I just thought that due to injury over the last few years he struggles to play regulalry & he can't bowl really fast anymore.(I remember Atherton saying that at one point Cairns was about the quickest bowler he faced, which highlights what he's now lackign as a bowler compared with a few years ago).
Maybe it's sensible for him to concentrate on the one day stuff, personally I'm no fan of limited over cricket but as somebody said Gough can't hope to play the long stuff anymore & it makes sense for Cairns to do the same.

Funny you mention that as Ricky Ponting virtually said as much in his World Cup Diary. In the NZ game he sledged him along the lines of " You bowled the other day against Zimbabwe, why not against us today"
