St Kilda v. Essendon
Friday, 8 June 2001 - Colonial Stadium 7:40 PM
St Kilda and Essendon hobble to Colonial Stadium this Friday
night, both coming off Round Ten losses and suffering plenty of
injuries. Not least the Essendon players' eardrums, which must
surely still be ringing after Wednesday night's novel training
session - which was held with music blaring from the rafters at
Colonial. An attempt to boost morale? An attempt to get over
the humiliating loss against the Lions? Or simply to get on TV -
after all it had been a good ten minutes since Kevin Sheedy had
been quoted, photographed or knighted!
One of Essendon's most crucial players, Dustin Fletcher, will
watch from the sidelines after being suspended for tripping. Add
to that the notable absences from Essendon's lineup - Caracella,
Long, Alessio, Barnes, Wallis, Misiti, Moorcroft, Mercuri to name
a few - and the "unavailable" list starts to look rather Long,
pardon the pun. New boy Bullen comes into the side with
Lalich, while Bolton has been omitted. In turn, St Kilda's
injury list now includes Loewe and Burke. Making a welcome
return are Gehrig, Hudghton, Ryan, Blake and Peckett.
If you'd been living in outer Kazakhstan for the past five years,
you might be tempted to think that the injuries suffered by both
teams would even out the contest somewhat. But Essendon is (a)
on the rebound and (b) has the incentive of staying on top of the
ladder and (c) is the Premier team, for Chrissake. As well, St
Kilda are such fair-minded, kind souls that they feel sorry for
any team they are beating and obligingly let the poor blokes claw
back the lead - yes, even if it's a several-goal lead at half
time - nay, even three quarter time.
Last time the Bombers lost two games in a row was in 1999, the
second loss being at the hands of the Saints. Since then
Essendon have defeated St Kilda each time - an average of 66
points - and even if the Saints are in the game at half time,
they will fall away against Essendon's trademark pressure.
Essendon's midfield, J.Johnson, McVeigh, M.Johnson, Peverill, and
Hille will be superior to the Saints and if there's any problem,
James Hird can be swung into the middle to sort it out. The
latter, Lloyd and Lucas will have recovered from their collective
inaccurate goalkicking affliction of last week.
Backmen Henneman, Wellman, Ramanauskas, Barnard, Hardwick and
Solomon will have to hold Hamill, Hall and at times Everitt,
whose ruckwork should provide a good test for young Hille. Big
Bad Bustlin' Barry is always a handful for the opposition and if
he gets on a roll his teammates will lift. Captain Robert Harvey
will lead from the front as usual - though his likely opponent,
Peverill, has collected a few big name scalps this year and is
yet another of the 'baby' Bombers playing like an experienced
young veteran. Moyle, Hayes and Begley probably won't be able
to match it with Essendon's midfield and the Bombers just look
stronger all over the ground.
It's not going to be a pretty game - need we mention the word
"flooding" again - but it will be interesting to see how both
teams respond to their respective losses last round.
I feel sorry for St Kilda.
Essendon by 55 points.

Geelong v. Hawthorn
Saturday, 9 June 2001 - Colonial Stadium 2:10 PM
The Hawks must be hurting bad now. The Mayblooms have lived up to
their name this year. I think it started with those rugby jumpers
during the civil aviation safety Authority Cup. It was funny,
they didn't seem to need Rehn when they walloped Bloody Carlton,
then again Holland was fit for that one too.
If they were playing anyone else, even Fremantle, you'd never
pick the kings of the dry area. They are, however, playing
Geelong.
Geelong is rapidly becoming a tragedy of mythical proportions.
When you drop a player, you drop him. You don't run him off the
bench like a sack of spuds just because he threatened to have a
hissy fit if dropped. Players play where they are picked, simple
as that. If they don't like it they can ask the truck driver
where they should be, he'll tell them where to go.
All this crap about Hocking in the budgie tray liner illustrates
one thing. Bomber Thompson is not fully in control at Geelong -
which is a recipe for disaster in a team sport as big as footy.
Collingwood have exemplified this for a decade. So did Adelaide
prior to Blight's appearance on the scene.
Hawthorn will be pretty hungry, but I can't see this game rising
to great heights. Maybe I'm wrong, who knows, read the Sunday
papers.
And Colonial wouldn't be in a position to not pay the AFL its
gate receipts because it's having corporate money troubles would
it?
Hawthorn will win.
In other matters dear to our hearts:
Essendon scare me.
West Coast will surprise the Fitzroy Bears
Adelaide can't kick enough goals to beat Footscray
North will do the decent thing
Richmond will knock over Carlton after getting a lot of ball out
of the middle.
South have gone mad, and Port will be tired after the last few
giant killing weeks.
Melbourne will struggle against an angry Collingwood, I'm
barracking for the Dees but the Pies aught to win it.

West Coast v. Brisbane
Saturday, 9 June 2001 - Subiaco 5:40 PM (7:40 PM AEST)
Even the most ardent supporter would concede that the Eagles 2001
season is over.
They are 2-8 and the 2 are St Kilda and Fremantle. Not the
biggest scalps in the world.
The Eagles are battling. No question. Their honeymoon from the
early 90s is well and truly finished. They are a team that has to
begin from square one.
It does not help when their injury list is as long as it is. When
you are struggling as they are, you can not afford to have
players like Banfield, Donnelly, Kemp, McIntosh, Peter Matera
sitting out and Read, Prior and Sierakowski gone for the season.
And it would pain the Eagles to see guys like Krummerl, Lyle,
Schofield, Ball and Fewster running around and playing footy.
The rebuilding should also look at getting a new coach. Ken Judge
does not cut the mustard at an AFL level and should go. His
lifetime winning ratio as a coach is only 39%. At the Eagles
alone, it is a paltry 29%
Brisbane should get the services of Justin Leppitsch back. After
beating Essendon they should be full of confidence.
The Lions had won there before and should win there again.
Tip: Lions by 30 points

Adelaide v. Western Bulldogs
Saturday, 9 June 2001 - Football Park 7:10 PM (7:40 PM AEST)
Adelaide may have kicked the Bulldogs out of 2 final series but
the Bulldogs have had the upper hand in recent home and away
games. This week, Adelaide are using their 60+ point humiliation
to the Bulldogs last year as motivation for this weeks game. The
Bulldogs won't use the preliminary final losses to motivate them,
as they will never get revenge. The fact that the Bulldogs are
now out of the eight should be motivation enough.
Last week the Crows had an 11 point win in a low scoring affair
against Geelong. They've now won 4 out of their past 5 games.
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs came crashing down to earth last Friday
against the Roos, losing by 46 points. Prior to that game, the
Bulldogs looked like they had got their season back on track
having won their past 3 games. Two of those were interstate, so
Football Park should hold no fear for the Bulldogs.
It will be interesting to see who will play on the Crows two best
players (arguably) McLeod and Ricciuto. Players such as Johnson,
Smith, Harrison and Robbins could take on either of those two.
For the last 2 years, Nathan Brown has kicked bags of 7 and 6
goals against Gary Ayres coached teams ie Geelong and Adelaide.
Will Brown make it 3 in a row? Another question is, where will
Chris Grant play? Last week he spent a lot of time in the forward
line, but started in defence against Wayne Carey. I think Grant
should play up forward. The Bulldogs have virtually no injuries
and there is no reason why they shouldn't be playing a more
attacking style of game.
The Bulldogs should win this game. I can't see Darcy getting
beaten in the ruck two weeks in a row. He will prove the
difference, giving first use of the ball to the likes of West,
Libba and Johnson while Grant, Hudson and Brown will be the
targets up forward. The Bulldogs will need to contain players
such as McLeod, Ricciuto, Burton, Jarman and Goodwin. The Crows
are playing OK at the moment but they will not be good enough on
Saturday night.
I predict the Bulldogs by 30 points

Kangaroos v. Fremantle
Sunday, 10 June 2001 - Colonial Stadium 2:10 PM
MEMO: All Kangaroos players and officials
FROM: Denis Pagan
RE: Weekend training session
As all of you are aware, we have the bye this week. However, in
the interests of keeping fit and focused for a run at the final
eight in the second half of the year, I have scheduled a light
training session for 22 of you on Sunday afternoon.
We have secured the use of Colonial Stadium for this work-out,
and you will be required to be in full uniform for the session.
It is envisaged that it will run from 2.10 to around about 4.45,
with an extended rest break during the session.
My intention is to capture as close as possible a realistic
match-day situation to enable us to work on full scale set plays,
ball movement, stop-play situations and general game-day drills.
To aid in the simulation of competition, I have invited an
amateur group of players known as the
"Dockers" to join us.
Please do not feel threatened by them. While they will be on the
ground, I wouldn't expect too many of them to get anywhere near
the ball, and on the odd chance they do end up with it, I've been
informed that most of them haven't got a clue what to do with it.
They won't even look like a real footy team I'm told - they'll be
wearing purple and green.
Note however that Peter Bell will be re-joining training this
week. However, I will be assigning him to the "Dockers" squad as
punishment for his abandonment of the club. And also, if Matthew
Burton and Jess Sinclair could see their way clear to re-joining
this "Dockers" outfit, I'd be most appreciative.
As for the session itself, I expect Corey McKernan to play
forward and continue his resurgence. I'm also hoping that
Anthony Stevens and David King can continue their good midfield
form. It is important for you defenders to gel a bit more
closely too, we're giving up some big scores and we need a lift
out of Micky Martyn and John Blakey.
Watch out for the Docker called Paul Haselby - he's useful - and
a tall kid called Matthew Pavlich who is a bit too good to be
running around for those jokers.
The AFL have been kind enough to award us four points for this
week's bye, but we shouldn't get too complacent with Hawthorn,
Port Adelaide and Melbourne in the next few weeks. And go easy
on those Docker boys, fellas, they've been having a bit of a
rough trot of late.
Kangaroos by 69 points.
Other tips: Essendon, Hawthorn, Brisbane Lions, Western
Bulldogs, Carlton,
Port Adelaide, Melbourne.

**********
Richmond v. Carlton
Sunday, 10 June 2001 - MCG 2:10 PM
Over 60,000 people are expected to make the trip to the Melbourne
Cricket Ground on Sunday to witness the clash between two of the
"big four"; traditional rivals Richmond and Carlton. To add even
more prestige to what is already a big game, it will be Steve
Silvagni's 300th game for Carlton, since he made his debut as a
skinny young kid back in 1985.
The form lines for both teams are hard to judge, as both played
against deplorable opposition last week. Carlton boosted their
percentage, beating West Coast by 119 points, in what will go
down as one of the Eagles poorest performances of their 15-season
history, and Richmond had a comfortable win over Fremantle who
are still without a win, and on the bottom of the league ladder.
Of late, the Tigers' strong midfield, whch had such a brilliant
start to the season, has suffered from indifferent form, with
rumblings from the club suggesting that former captain Matthew
Knights was close to being dropped. This follows the axing (for
one week) of another experienced player, Nick Daffy, recently.
Luckily for the Tigers, their opposition last week was insipid
and inept, and they survived with minimal contributions from
these two players, relying instead on Wayne Campbell and Greg
Tivendale to move the ball forward. Brad Ottens worked
beautifully as the spearhead, finishing off the midfield's work
with thirteen marks and three goals.
If that makes it hard to evaluate Richmond's form, it would be
practically impossible to give an accurate interpretation of how
the Blues are going. Last week they kicked 21.23 against the
Eagles (and had 12 goalkickers) and 7 players amass 20 disposals
or more, in a demolition of the Eagles. Only their own inaccuracy
prevented the Blues from recording a win of 150 points or more.
The Tigers will provide better opposition for the Blues,
especially with Matthew Richardson returning from injury, but it
is hard to pick against a team that won by 119 points the
previous week. Carlton is one side that has enough tall timber to
nullify the triple-pronged Richmond attack of Ottens, Richardson
and Holland. Expect Manton, Silvagni and Beaumont to take on
those three respective opponents, although it would not surprise
if the job of minding Richardson went to Anthony Koutoufides, who
has the pace and athleticism to match him.
Richmond should be fired up thinking about the result the last
time these two teams met, when Carlton's 73-point victory in
Round 22 last year, cost Richmond a place in the finals. But if
the Tigers didn't fire up then, they probably won't fire up on
Sunday.
THE VERDICT : Carlton by 14 points.
HEAD TO HEAD : Played 189. Richmond 78 wins, Carlton 109 wins, 2
draws.
LAST 10 MATCHES : Richmond 3, Carlton 7.
LAST TIME : Round 22, 2000 at the MCG. Carlton 19.11.125 defeated
Richmond 7.10.52
OTHER WINNERS : Essendon by 137
Hawthorn by 18
Brisbane by 51
Adelaide by 19
Port Adelaide by 20
Kangaroos by 79
Melbourne by 22

Sydney v. Port Adelaide
Sunday, 10 June 2001 - SCG 2:10 PM
The Court House Hotel, Newtown, Sunday Round 11.
If South was a horse they'd swab it. Port will try to get a run
on in this game but in the cramped conditions at the SCG I expect
Sydney to will bottle them up, and the red and whites will turn
the corner.
Port have had a phenomenal run. Following Essendon through the
draw isn't the worst lurk that's going around, but Sydney showed
how to knobble a game last week - and they have enough genuine
firepower to really pump Port's backmen.
With Kelly back in the line up, and their confidence on a high,
the Bloods are really playing for their season. This is the first
time in a few weeks they don't come up against a side that's just
been touched up by Sheedy's Privateers. I'm not convinced Primus
is 100%.
Mind you, it will be a cracker of a game. Port are one of the
most attractive direct sides running around, and are good things
on a quinella against the field for the big one.
But Sydney, they're just mad.
They're mad and they don't care anymore.
They'll go out there and play their skins off.
And win.
In other matters dear to our hearts:
Essendon scare me.
Mayblooms over the Pivotonians.
West Coast will surprise the Fitzroy Bears
Adelaide can't kick enough goals to beat Footscray
North will do the decent thing
Richmond will knock over Carlton after getting a lot of ball out

Melbourne v. Collingwood
Monday, 11 June 2001 - MCG 2:10 PM
If the Melbourne Football Club believe all they have to do is
turn up at the ball park to collect 4 points against the Magpies
on Monday at the MCG they will certainly depart all time losers.
Collingwood had a shocker against the Swannies - nothing went
right the Magpies are a good unit. As we all know there is
nothing more dangerous than a good Collingwood outfit with it's
back to the wall.
The myth no Buckley no Collingwood is crap and this will be
proven on Monday. It is worth remembering in a certain game
against Richmond a few years back when Buckley was not present
the Magpies lifted and won dispelling the theory.
In any case who are Melbourne? Is this the side that had a dream
draw from mid season last year and got into the Grand Final only
to be embarrassed in front of the whole football world so can
some one tell me what has changed? You mention Melbourne to non
Melbourne people and all you come up with is maybe three players
at best. Schwarz, Neits and Farmer; and if none of these three
fire, Melbourne backfire.
Collingwood however have an array of talent all over the paddock
it is young talent it is raw talent but it is talent that is
going to be around for a long, long time.
Won't the chardonnay drinkers in the MCC stand have purple noses
at the end of this one. You can see the red veins in their purple
noses now, wishing they had gone to the snow.
Just be very careful Melbourne. Dismissing Collingwood as easy
beats may come back to haunt you for a long, long time.
But then again who really cares what the Melbourne Football Club
thinks?
Collingwood by one point.

5) The Quick Snap
"Pointing the finger"
Comment from 'The Half Back Flanker'
http://www.afltips.com/people/halfbackflanker.html
Here we are, almost halfway through the season, and definitely in
need of some comic relief.
So, as promised in an earlier edition, here is an up-date (sorry
about the pun) on John Hopoate (the rugby league player found
guilty of sticking his fingers into other players' anal regions
during a game, and sentenced to a 12 week suspension)...
"You put your left finger in, you pull your left finger out, you
put your right finger in and you shake it all about, you do the
Hopoate then you turn around, that's what it's all about".
Following the revelations by Terry Lamb (Hopoate's coach) that
what Hopoate did is commonplace in Rugby League, Ian Roberts has
announced his return to the game.
I think the criticism leveled at Hoppa is totally unfounded; he
is being fingered for a crime he did not commit.
What's the bet Terry Lamb will tell John to "pull his finger
out".
Hopoate: Public Enema Number 1.
Hoppa...the human thermometer.
"He just wanted to enlarge his circle of friends".
"Hopoate is going to star in the next Bond film - Brown Finger".
"We always thought he was a sh*t stirrer!"
I hear John has applied to have his surname changed to
"Stopafarte".
Now that his Football career is over, Hopoate is planning the
move to boxing. In a statement this morning, John stated that he
was "keen to get into Anthony Mundine's ring".
Tim Tams are looking at using John Hopoate to promote their new
biscuit … the chocolate finger.
'The Half Back Flanker' is not the author of any of the above
jokes, and while the original authors no doubt intended
resemblance to persons living or dead, no responsibility of any
kind is acknowledged or accepted by 'The Half Back Flanker'.

St Kilda v.

Kilda are such fair-minded, kind souls that they feel sorry for
any team they are beating and obligingly let the poor blokes claw

time - nay, even three quarter time.

Geelong v.

Bulldogs, Carlton,
Port Adelaide, Melbourne.

Richmond v.

And win.
