OPPOSITION fans believe it, Collingwood supporters secretly admit it, but Melbourne coach Neale Daniher hopes his players don't fall for the 'no Buckley, no Magpies' theory.

Collingwood will be without captain Nathan Buckley for tomorrow's Queen's Birthday clash with old rival Melbourne at the MCG due to a leg injury.

Buckley was forced out of last week's home loss to Sydney before half-time due to his injury problem - claimed by the club to be a hamstring - and his absence for the majority of the match had a profound impact on his team.

Whether Buckley is the AFL's best player is moot, but certainly no player means more to his team.

His impact extends beyond his capacity to rack up high numbers of possessions, mostly used to good effect, to his cajoling and instructing of younger teammates.

'Its a big loss to them but his team and teammates have had a number of days to get their head around the fact he's not playing and they'll be ready,' Daniher said.

'We've just got to be careful that we don't come maybe just a little bit relaxed because Nathan's not playing.

'We've got a bit of time to get our head around that as well - its a big game so I don't think we'll be complacent.'

The intensity of the Demons-Magpies rivalry had waned since its peak in the 1950s and 1960s, with the two clubs winning just one premiership between them in the last 36 years.

However, within the context of the season, this was a critical contest - both teams' finals ambitions in the balance at 5-5.

The Demons potency was markedly enhanced by the return of forward pocket goalsneak Jeff Farmer after five weeks out with a hamstring injury.

Farmer was benched in the first half of the corresponding match last year, before kicking an astonishing nine goals in the second half to destroy the Pies.

Daniher had warned 'The Wizard' would take six weeks to return to his best, but his mere presence on the field will cause match-up headaches for Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse.

The Magpies regained ruckman Steven McKee from a shoulder problem, improving their flexibility and depth of big man talent.

McKee's time on the ball could allow first ruckman Josh Fraser to spell up forward, adding to the power of the Pies in-form attack Chris Tarrant, Jarrod Molloy and Anthony Rocca.
