View Full Version : Our Biggest Rival
After Monday's game, I now believe Collingwood is our biggest rival. The game on Monday made me realise how much I hate them. It was always Essendon I hated most. Not just because of the Grand Final, I just never really liked them. When Essendon played Collingwood I always used to barrack for Collingwood. This was despite the fact I ws brought up to hate Collingwood becuase of the fierce rivalry of the 50's and 60's. Well after Monday I believe it is the bigger rivalry than the Essendon rivalry and the people I was sitting around thought so as well. Your thoughts???

yeah, it would have to be collingwood, and we have built up a tradition as well, with the game being played on the Queen's holiday as well. another rival would be hawthorn, cos of all the merger stuff, and also i think there used to be a rivalry with richmond, but that has since died down a bit

Collingwood is probably the bigger rivalry because of the 50's and 60's and probably always will be, but we have built a rivalry with essendon over the last few years...
Dunno bout you, but beating Essendon would feel WAYYYYYYY better than beating Collingwood:)
Rivalry is healthy, thats one of Melbournes problems I reckon, we need to build up a strong rivalry with a couple of clubs, build interest up in games...
The closest we've come to a healthy rivalry lately woulda been with West Coast early 90's but its died off lately...
Who would care if we beat West Coast nowadays? It'd be expected, surely.
I'd also count Collingwood and Essendon as rivals, but sadly our rivalries aren't played up as much as other clubs'.

it was also expected that we beat collingwood as well. But that didnt happen did it???? nup !
if it iwas thing i have learned a win is never certain in AFL these days. except against Freo :p
Melbourne have met Collingwood in seven Grand Final. This is the most that any two clubs have met in head-to-head Grand Finals.
Essendon have met Melbourne six times. Because of the rivalry in the 1950s and 60's (Collingwood played Melbourne in five Grand Final in tat era - 55,56,58,60,64), Collingwood is regarded as Melbournes biggest rival.
Although these days, that rivalry wouldn't mean much to a lot of younger Melbourne fans. Essendon may be a bigger rival to some of the younger Melbourne fans, while to the older ones, I would imagine it would be Collingwood. :)

The rivalry with West Coast (even tho theyre not doing so well now, couldve been a good one)
There was a lot of heat between the two clubs, started late 80's when Murray Wrenstead(remember him?) missed that goal that lost them the Elimination Final against us at Waverly:) and continued into the early 90's when we one over at Subiaco and Brian Wilson stirred up the crowd down there.
Also the Chris Lewis/ Todd Viney biting incident heated things up even more.
But, Dan and his mob ruined it (again) with their stupid jacket waving antics ;)
BPP,
Lately, Essendon has been rivals with everyone.

Essendon, Colling and the Bulldogs......I can't stand the Bulldogs
(sorry X-Box-X).
Melbourne (administravely speaking) SHOULd promote a rivalry between ALL THE INTERSTATE CLUBS....make it a State vs. State thing.........slack as usual Melbourne.......you should follow Essendon's administration who have been so successful at promoting that great club.
We should make Melbourne v Sydney games big one's. The two biggest cities in the country head to head. Also most Sydney siders hate Melbournian's and vice versa. Should be good if it happens.
