View Full Version : Could Shannon be our Davey

Looking at Davey yesterday just left me amazed that all the so called experts at every AFL didn’t rate him worth drafting. The impact he has had this year surely has been worthy of a first round pick if not a top 10.The only thing I can reason is that the Cats hierarchy thought he was so light that he might struggle with the demands of AFL at his weight and this might yet show to be the case. They appeared to want a player who’s body was AFL ready, so they picked Thurley. Thurley instead of Davey now looks like a miss, imagine the extra pace of Davey added to Tenace.
The one saving grace for us might be a player we already have, Shannon Byrne. Saw him on Sunday blow past a couple of players picking the ball up in two strides and deliver lace out to a forward. The kid might not be big but as the say in the classics he’s got class written all over him. He’s got the speed that a player of his size needs and has the skill that will separate him from most players and unlike Davey he’s more likely to be the player to create and give assists, like an Ablett rather than just be a finisher. He’s already showed pre season that he can mix it and I d like to see him in the team if we have a LTI. Thurley might yet prove servacible a bit like David Johnson but Byrne has the raw stuff to make him one of our top 10. If he gets there the Davey miss might not sting quite as much

I (and Shannon himself) still maintain that he is a pure midfielder, who can simply kick the odd goal.

Definitely a different type to Davey.

On that point though is he the sort of mid fielder u need? and if he is good enough should not he be able to adapt to the role? i mean Davey gets a run in the middle and will do so more and more as his fitness improves

We could always do with more quick, skilled midfielders. Can never have enough of those.

I'm certain, if given the chance, Shan will take on the Peter Riccardi role, right down to the hopeless kicking on his off foot.

Heh, hope your right. Seb has given me a strange yet wondering facsination with Shan. Good Luck to him, is he still on the Rookie list?

He looks to have good finishing skills which will again improve our passing to the forwards when upfield but just like Chapman,Ablett
he might have to just get into the team anywhere he can and show his stuff.Kicks some goals in the pocket and do a bit of time in the middle untill he cements his place.Anyway, has he got the stamina to be in there at this time ?Where did he finish in pre season trials with the likes of Ling and Spriggs?

Defintely a midfielder but hard to see him fitting in there anytime soon.
