View Full Version : Essendon v Geelong: Cameron Ling to match up on?
The topic speaks for itself really.
Cameron Ling, excluding his performance against the Crows, hasn't been in the best of form and will mostly likely play a negating role (rather than a true midfielder role) on the weekend, but the question begs to be answered, who will he run with?
From memory, Pev has stitched us up on past occasions in the midfield, i think last year he managed to notch up a phenomenal amount of possessions against us (30+). So, i was wondering, although Pev plays a similar role to Ling for the Bombers, is there any chance we might see a match-up between these two?
If not, perhaps Jason Johnson is the correct match up for him?
Guess all shall be revealed in a few days time anyway :)
Thoughts?

I'd Doubt Pevrill would play on him or him on Pevrill my outta the "left field" guess would be that he would start on Rioli... who has become a "first quater specialist" if not Rioli then yeah probebly JJ

I would think he would most likely match up on Jason Johnson, seems the most logical choice.
On Saturday night there could be 4 johnsons playing, imagine all 4 of them running to the ball at the same time.... a commentators nightmare
Although i think David might be dropped and Steve still might not be ready.

I'd imagine that Ling will play his own game this weekend, thus i'd see him taking on Essendon's weakest midfielder.
I'd expect to see Kel go one-on-one with JJ, whilst Peverill will take Smithy.
A few other matchups i expect to see:
Dash vs. Solomon
Ablett vs. Welsh
Sanderson vs. Cupido
Hunt vs. Lovett-Murray
H vs. Lucas
I doubt Ling will get tagged, or Pev will get tagged. Both midfields will be free to run, which will let the better midfield on the day win. But if an onballer starts to get leather poisoning, then Pev will more then likely be called in. I haven't been following Geelongs season that closely, who has been highest possesion getter most of the time for the cats this year if not ling?

1. Cameron Ling 165
2. James Kelly 143
3. Cameron Mooney 141
4. Joel Corey 120
5. Paul Chapman 116
Very suprised to see Mooney so high, corey would most likely be another 20 higher, but only played 1 min last week.
Kelly is definitely our second best midfielder atm

Why would Pev get a tag?
PS: Who gets Murf?

I agree Dharma. I not sure if it will be the General Ling but please get sombody on that bludger Murphy. Give the order for somebody to sit on him cause the slimey, sheepdog way he plays seems to suit a side like Essendon who just let him sit pat and wait to finish. He is a good kick and will kick over our twin tower Road Blocks, espec at the Dome.

It isn't a huge concern for me. If we want to be daring, give Tenace a chance to hurt him going the other way, if we want to shut him down, slide Fumbles across (should he still be in the team).

He'll be dropped thursday night, but return saturday night.
We should call him Lazarus.

Seen a bit of Esse-don on the TV this year [surprise, surprise], and one thing we really need to watch is the fast-break-goal-from-the-kickout-routine [for want of a better term]. They get so many quick, cheap ones this way.
It seems that Fletch just bombs it long to the centre square [kicking over the zone], while Solly or McPhee or [god forbid] even Murf converge from the HBF, gather, bounce and kick to Lloyd. Goal.
Maybe the zone needs to be set deeper, or more attention paid to these guys loose on the edge of the square. Will Thompson be onto it though?

Ones strength is also ones weakness.
Predictability can work for them , players run off to receive the bomb etc. but if we know it we can use against them.
Try this. Leave the zone set but take BG out of it.Cause the TO, get the ball to Benny G and bomb the thing right back. Ess players should be out of position and our guys running on to a Pagans Paddock.

May not be a problem as the Cats seem to go Man on man at a kick in and do it quite well, at least when the guys are playing reasonable footy. Flectcher's long kick outs could be nullified somewhat if that is the case.
