View Full Version : hawks v swans
ok ,we have had a much needed win and seeing the smiles on the players faces suggests that the mood this week would be vastly different than in recent weeks...i hope they are filling each other with confidence and head to sydney with the full belief of winning...afterall we did it last time we went to sydney..
the swans will be without goodes which is a big bonus for us as he is a quality player..i do wish him good luck in his recovery because i like the bloke...having said that we have to take advantage...spider will have things a bit easier...
smith on big bad bazza should be definate,he did a superb job last time so why not ask for a repeat performance...
we are in with a big chance on sunday so fingers crossed....
GO HAWKS.........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Need to string two wins together. The week after we have Adelaide and then the dreaded Essendon.

We need a focal point up forward though...and going by last week Barker isn't quite up to it...hopefully Thommo comes up and gets into form in the match.
Agree we need a focal point but with Thommo's form would prefer to pay him at CHF so he can get more of the ball. Leave the forward line very open.
Lochlan Veale anyone??? he can play KP :D

looks like goodes will play so things just got tougher for the hawks..still,i think we can give them a good shake...they have been vunerable at the scg and are down on form...
for a win i think the whole team will have to play well but i think the following group will have to do just that little bit more...
jacobs
croad
graham
mitchell
williams
lekkas
crawford
barker
cambell
brown

Damn It! The game was almost ours!
A few decisions by the umps cost us dearly (Croad's mark just before 3 qtr time), but it's over now.
I think the Hawks are on the improve - if Dutchy and Thommo are back in next week - let's hope they dominate because our forward line needs them to perform...

If anyone on this page posts that we were unlucky to lose the Sydney game they are misguided. When an AFL team scores one point in a quarter in seemingly perfect conditions, they dont deserve to win. Schwabs decision to go with a small forward line despite the Swans lack of tall defenders simply blew up in his face as the side had no target to aim at while Sydney could go to Hall and O'Laughlin. Hawthorns goals over the first three quarters had an almost accidental look about them given there was no obvious plan of attack. Only when Croad was put on an ailing Goodes in the final quarter did the side straighten up and kick to the hot spot. The lack of Footy smarts at our club is not restricted to the onfield staff, believe me.
The Croad "non mark" turned out to be crucial but cant be used as a reason we lost. Once again the side has given up a start, reeled it back, grabbed the lead with all the momentum and plenty of time left to run all over the opposition.....and lost. It has simply happened too many times in recent years for my liking. I think the players get nervous when confronted with the chance of a monumental victory, interstate, from a long way behind or against top opposition. Apart from the obvious deficiencies we have in playing talent we also have a chronic lack of self belief that once again reared its ugly head today.
Can someone explain to me the benefit of having Simon Beaumont on the list?

I know Thommo hasn't been in good form, and I know a lot of people have been calling for him to be dropped. I also know how easy it is to be wise in hindsight.
However, I was disappointed we didn't play Thommo this week. Sydney is one team he always seems to play well against, and we could have used some marking power in the forward lines today.

You make it sound as if we got thumped! If what you say is right, then we almost pulled off an unlikely win!
I'm pretty disappointed they lost, but the game was far better to watch than the Hawks v Geelong game a few weeks ago....
I agree that the Thommo decision was bewildering. I thought a run at CHF would have been good for him. And given the size of the SCG a run at FF would have been the same.
I think that Dutchy's time is over but that shouldn't affect how we treat Thommo.
What astounded me was the kick outs. Joel Smith was really struggling and the plan was not working. We just didn't seem to have a back up plan or someone else to kick out. Given the size of the ground and the numbers the swans pushed forward (there was 5-6 players inside 45m) I would have just kicked long and straight down the guts.
Oh well. At least the team had a go.

Pulling off a win against Sydney right now is hardly anything to write home about, their form is about as bad as ours. Added to this must be their innacuracy in front of goal which clearly kept us in it. Their are few positives to be taken out of losses and near season ending ones like yesterday cant be excused because the team "had a go"or "were better to watch"than a fortnight ago.
Andrew,
not saying that the loss is acceptable. Far from so. We have a lot of rebuilding to do to get the team back into the mix. As you said we were lucky that the Swans did not kick straight and we should have capitalised on that and won the game. That is what good teams do, when they see an opportunity they grab it and don't let go. I was just glad to see some effort from the players, but the true test will be when they are 30-40 points down and they still have a go.
