Rachel Williams reports Axed St Kilda toughman Steven Lawrence will play for Port Melbourne on Saturday at Bellerive when the Tasmanian Devils aim to avenge last year's VFL semi-final loss to the Borough.
Lawrence, the son of Tasmanian and St Kilda legend Barry Lawrence, was given a leave of absence from St Kilda after a car accident last August and was delisted at the end of the year.
The nuggety utility, who turned 28 yesterday, played 120 AFL games with Brisbane and the Saints before being dumped and he is lining up with the Borough this season in a bid to turn around his football career.
Lawrence will be just one AFL-experienced player lining up with the Kangaroos-aligned Borough, with Shane and Jeremy Clayton and Brent Harvey's brother Shane expected to play.
The Devils lost a spot in the preliminary final last season when they gave away a 23-point lead in the last quarter to lose to the Borough at Bellerive.
Coach Mathew Armstrong has said it was a case of the Devils losing the match rather than the Borough winning it and now the side is determined to vindicate the loss. Port Melbourne, the reigning VFL champion, and the Devils are second and fourth on the ladder respectively, with only percentage separating them.
