Nice to play port at adelaide oval , with them surrendering any home ground advantage from their usual hole.
Eags had late with drawals -Skipworth & you can't be serious(shirley), plus even later withdrawals Ellis & Passador.
First quarter saw port dominate into the breeze with a handy 3 goal start. Parry was more than matching O'hara, allowing port to maintain an advantage in the clearances but highly suprisingly, and most unexpectedly, got reported for some filth that may see his 4 games so far on the sidelines added to, so far this year.
Quarter number two was mark stevens - dominated whilst no-one else in the eags fwd 50 could hold the ball in the area. Port had francis seemingly playing a loose man in defence in the first half.
Was not happy with Powell's game early, promoted to a wing from his usual back flank, was led a merry dance by port's numer 4 prompting a bench spell. In qtr 4 he did not sheperd and allowed port to come in and smother what should have been an easy clearance.
Frewen was steady at CHB but dropped an uncontested sitter on the wing but took some contested good marks in defence
Always nice to hand ethelton their biggest shellacking for the year. over 10 goals I think
Great games by Merriman -the best for our club so far, quality courageous marks backing into packs and Floreani - his disposal getts a caning, but for the small size he is, makes up for it by hos courageous unbroken tackles of players twice his size.
Fegus Watts also was more than lively, despite the fillth he was subjected to.
No doubt we were helped by a few injuries to port - esp no 14 for port who was on fire
Luke Toia, allowed more midfield time bursted through tackles in last term with some good clearances.
Matty Stokes good with 4 goals. (i think)
Vinnie Rugulo has been quieter in the last few weeks, opposition have been paying him more respect.
Spehr, in his first game for the club laid 2 great tackles in succession, and had a bit of the ball.
Fiachi started well with a number of disposals in the first term
The umpires were inconsistent,
An example of this was on the same spot of the ground (south eastern pocket)- qtr one Mark stevens tackled whilst in posession, did a full 360 bu tthe handpassed - decision - Holding the ball.
Qtr 2 - Show pony **** collins tackled, did a full 360 turn whilst in possession - ball up. Although his attempted dive for a free in qtr 3 made up for this, he took a dive and collected the pass (attempted to mark the ball) from his team mate in the head. I lost it at this effort!!!
.08 Rock'n'roll ronnie burns seems not to like anyone tackling him, especially hip & shoulder contact! Once bumped by lindsay he got up and ran to confront the star ruckman - lowering my opinion of the drink driving fool. I offered him a ride home, but he seemed to decline, by running to the bench, feigning a back injury rather than continuing for the port magpie power. I'm not sure he will stay on next year after his afl delisting. Don't forget magpie fans he kicked 5.4 earlier in the year for you, but I'm sure you'll say good riddance.
Scott stevens was wishing that port were not one of the few clubs that had two choices in last years afl minidraft, or maybe even that his first name was mark. Not sure of the thinking of ethelton to draft CROWS players, perhaps they want to be the SANFL team for ALL south australians or something
Had to feel for ricky o'loughlin who's thought's seemed to be elsewhere (perhaps his close proximity to heaven was distracting) Some magpie wag in the chappell stand questioned his heart and hardnesss of disposals earned so he then attempted to spoil an inkster mark by punching Tim's face in Qtr 4, my sympathy then dissolved.
All in all a quality day at the footy at Adelaide oval - must say having ABC coverage was good for the Clipsal Vision superscrcreen, because unlike the game against the resurgent roosters, we actually had a replay facility/option. This meant the few magpie supporters around us could actually see what the 50 metre penalty's...... al la ackland, and free kicks awarded againt the knee dropping fiegert, were awarded for.
Could have sworn I saw the ol captain one eye, Darryl Pull, on the southern mound, maybe he will come out of retirement again, or maybe was just checking the knee dropping in packs was as he had mastered?
Goal of the day went to Paul Lindsay, alright he was unmarked in the goalsquare 2 metres out, but I have seen AFL players miss goals from closer, uncontested positions, in goalsquares, in prelim finals (ie last years 1 millimetre out choking miss by the gun forward warren tearday)
Go you MIGHTY MIGHTY MIGHTY EAGLES
