Is The West Australian's football department, and sport's department in general, in for a shake-up.
The arrival of Steve Butler from the paper's general section has certainly ruffled some feathers. He has replaced John McGrath as an AFL writer.
Talking about egos. What has caused some concerns among his colleagues was last Thursday's article (including a photo and contact phone number). Has that ever happened before? Certainly, for the appointment of a new sports editor, yes, but not for a sports writer.
But there is more . . . . One would think that the sports editor would have written the announcement. But no . . . . Butler wrote it himself, presumably with the editor's blessing. However, about three quarters of the article was cut. One staff member tells me it was extremely boastful.
To end this report, there are concerns that Butler is angling for the sports editor's job when Ray Wilson is expected to give the sports editor's job away after the Olympics.
Very interesting. There is an enormous display of egos on display there.
