Report from AFL Queensland Website from game at Manuka Oval
Queensland defeat Canberra in freezing conditions
Queensland came from behind in a gutsy final term performance to retain the Phil Harper Challenge Cup by defeating AFL Canberra in the interstate clash at Manuka Oval on Sunday morning.
The early morning game which was being played as a curtain raiser to the Kangaroos, West Coast Eagles clash, commenced with the temperature hovering just above freezing and it took the Queenslanders until the third quarter to get their game plan operational.
Coach Danny Craven, who was full of praise for the players after the match said, “the back six, lead by Jeremy Stiller and Luke Jenkins kept us in the game early, but after half time everyone contributed to the win which was our first victory in Canberra for 32 years.”
The final result was in the balance until the 18 minute mark of the final quarter when Korey Fulton kicked his fourth goal of the game to put Queensland in front for the first time.
Queensland played their best football after half time kicking eight goals to three, Jacob Gough and Leigh Ryswyk were the only other goal scores for the victors with three goals each.
Officials from both Leagues are hopeful the third of these annual clashes can be played as a curtain raiser to a Brisbane Lions match at the Gabba next year.
