I like that team. Now if only we could get all on and fit (like gardiner) and get them playing well

backilne is still a bit suss. not only are we lacking in accountability but we are also lacking in rebound with wirrupunda on the bench.

B: Banfield, Glass, Hunter
HF: Wirrpunda, Lynch, Nicoski
C: Embley, Cousins, Braun
HF: Chick, Hansen, Fletcher
F: Sampi, MacDougall, Matera
Foll: Gardiner, Judd, Kerr
Int: (from :p) Butler, Morrison, Gaspar, Seaby, B. Jones, R. Jones, Cox
You guys have got to be kidding as gaspar as our CHF, Hansen IMO has overtaken him in terms of talent and work ethic, i think he is a better player as well in all respect to trav

it's harder than i thought it would be to come up with a best team, we actually have a bit of depth! If only we could get everyone fit.....

Gaspar has shown far more than Hansen. Hansen has played a handful of games, yet I think most people realise Gaspar has much more talent than Hansen.
Gaspar's problems lie with staying healthy enough to be out on the park
Assuming we have a clean slate injury-wise at the start of next season, here's what I'd see our rd 1 2005 team being
B: Wirrpunda/Glass/Nicoski
HB:Chick/Lynch/Hunter
C:Fletcher/Cousins/Embley
HF:Sampi/Gardiner/Staker
F:Seaby/McDougall/Matera
R:Cox/Judd/Kerr
Int:Braun/Gaspar/Butler/R.Jones
I think one of the most interesting things next year will be what our midfield looks like. With Butler, Selwood (and Morton!) coming through, the likes of Judd and Cousins will spend a lot more time up forward. and I wouldn't be surprised if Selwood in particular ends up a starting midfielder next year due to his defensive qualities.

If we can keep Judd and stay healthy, 2005 and beyond looks VERY promising.
And I think Hansen has more talent than Gaspar. Although both are bloody injury prone (as are 90% of our big men).

As well as the depth we will have in the midfield with Waters, Nicoski, Selwood, Morton, Chick, Embley, Sampi and Fletcher all rotating through the centre. And then the added depth in the big man dept with Hansen, Beeck, Graham and Johnson all looking likely to take the next step.
2005 is looking good.

In all honesty, how do you think our list holds up against other clubs?
I see Brisbane, Port, Saints, Melbourne ahead of us, with us Equal to Geelong and Freo, and the rest below us.

Brisbane, Port and the Saints are ahead of us. We are fairly equal with teams like Geelong and Fremantle. Melbourne are too unpredictable, one year they are good, the next they suck. I think we are further along than Essendon and have far better younger players. Sydney is a tough one too but I think we have a better list than them.
Next year will certainly be an interesting one.

What seperate us from those top 3 is experience. Those team, even the young saints, have had time together to gel. IMO 2005 is looking extremely exciting for us, and 2006 we're a serious shot at the flag.

I think your team is the best. I might put B. Jones on the bench instead of R. Jones then Wirra can become part of the midfield rotations.

If Gardiner is fit and well i can't see any reason not to start him in the ruck. He is easily the best tap ruckmen we have, and with Gaspar, Cox, Seaby, McDougal and Staker in our forwardline (all are very good contested marks, except McDougal who continues to improve). With Gardiner as a ruckmen we are a definate top 4 chance.

Injuries mate, as we've discovered the past 2 years, we cant afford to have gardiner not playing, id rather him see out his career at CHF or FF and do it playing fit, then see him dominate in the ruck with pain and discomfort, hes to valuable.
Besides, Dean Cox has become one of the better ruckmans in the league as it is and with the emergence of Seaby, gardiner is no longer a requirement in the ruck.

i quite like the look of this team too. maybe the only changes Hansen for Gaspar and maybe R. Jones.
Most have left Banners out of their best 22. Does everyone see him as a fringe player next year? Personally i think his impact/presence in the team has been very telling since he's come back and think the team looks a lot more settled with him in it. thoughts?

Hansen's played a couple of ok games, but in no way has the talent of Gaspar. Gaspar can actually take a contested mark, a rare thing in footy these days, whereas pretty much all of Hansen's goals have come from roving off McDougall or being open on the rebound.
Not saying I don't like the guy (Hansen), or for that matter rate him, but Gaspar is a lock in our best 18 when fit....

I agree, in his first few games B.Jones has shown alot of promise, and R.Jones has been struggling with injury and form all year

Gaspar can take a mark, but when he's never on the field, how does that help us?

Hence the qualification "When fit"
Talking purely on talent terms here

No time to work thru' the team, but:
- switch Gardiner to FF, McDougall at CHF
- have to play HFFs who defend the forward 50 (Sampi, lift your game) and
- tough HBFs who can turn defence into attack (perhaps Waters and Hunter, though both need to lift their disposal a notch).
