MARK Harvey, Kevin Sheedy's loyal deputy for seven years at Essendon, is desperate to become a senior coach next year.

He concedes it is unlikely to be at Essendon in the short term, given Sheedy's imminent contract extension.

"When you've been in the system for six or seven years like I have, as an assistant, most guys look forward to being a head coach. I'm no different," he said. Harvey's three-year contract at Windy Hill expires on October 1.

"I've never put in an application elsewhere," Harvey says. "But I have spoken casually to (other) clubs.

"I've done the all-round things. I don't need to go out there and sell myself."

Asked if Sheedy was re-contracted where it left him, he laughed and said: "Out of a job!"

I think that this is a good risk to take with harvey. He is younger than O'donnel and eade and has been in the game for ages while wallace and eade have been out for 2 years. I certainly would have him as my #1 target. Thoughts?

definitely should be the no.1 target. If he made himself available and RFC picked up Eade instead of Harvey, I would be thoroughly pi$$ed off

casey has more or less put himself and the club in a corner by saying we will target a former afl coach.

cheers!

What worries me about Harvey is he's football/coaching experience might be limited as he's spent his whole time in AFL footy only at one club.

Harvey would be Frawley re-visited.
Both nuff nuffs that cant speak......just what we need

Wallace.

Harvey strikes me as a good reserves player in terms of coaching.
(Certainly not in terms of playing, he was very good.) My personal opinion with no concrete evidence, I just perceive that he is not articulate enough to head a coaching department that has a lot of work to do in a lot of areas.
I think the club made it clear that they want a coach with experience and a background which includes a successful football culture. To me Eade and Wallace appear to be the only ones available who meet the criteria.
I would like to get Sheedy. I think we'll get Eade.

we really need an experienced hand which discoutns a Harvey, dont dismiss eade, he had an enviable record in Sydney , making the finals all but one season...and to a GF as well Along the way the swans regualrly troubled good sides which also is a positive sign...I recall this was one of Northeys failings...

Eades ego in being tactically astute took over the nurturing of players to the point where they no longer enjoyed playing the game.

When Roos came it was such a breath of fresh air.

I thought Harvey was articulate enough. Heard him on 3AW.

Its one thing to see the operating of a successful club but another to actually replicate it.

Dont like the idea of someone coming to the club with the attitude of "I really wanted to coach Essendon but since thats not available lets see what else is around". Wallace has also made hints that Richmond is not his first choice.

Why I prefer Harvey Over Odonald is Harvey has more mongrel in him. Odonald was a bit of a goody two shoes.

Also Harvey has seen Sheeds change, change and then change again. He has seen how sheeds makes tough calculated decisions on the playing list. How he can build a players worth up(Blumfield) off load to another club and always seem to win in trades.

He has witnessed how sheeds always makes decisions based on the future. Never makes quick fix descisions ( except when trading for Ruckman) and knows where the playing list is and what is needed in the group to bring them close to a premiership.

As a Player and assistant coach Harvey has seen it all. He fits the Mould.

Harvey SHOULD BE OUR NO 1 Priotity.

If i was to go for an untried coach, it would be O'Donnell.
But prefer an experienced coach, and with what's left in the mix at the moment, I'd go for Wallace - even tho i can't stand the guy. Then again, that makes it easier to bag him if things go wrong lol.

On that basis wouldnt we better going after Robert Shaw, since Shaw has the experience aswell as the above criteria?

I know he hasnt thrown his hat in the ring but he may be waiting to be approached.

speaking of the Blumfield trade ...how well is Tristan Cartledge going?

I haven't heard Tristan seting the world on fire..

I'd prefer our picks were untouchable and we only trade our players.

Agree in theory. Or maybe harvey knows where to play blumfield and that is on the wing or in the midfield. Not a FP for the whole game. Thats his best position and that is where he nearly got the norm smith medal and he carved up sides. Just needs a better second half of 04. I believe that if we had harvey come in it would be a breath of fresh air like when roos came in to replace eade. You look how good the swans players listen to roos because he is more younger than most coaches and he really listens to the players and has a good relationship with them.

Harvey makes me laugh. He wouldnt even know how to find his way to another team's football ground. Even when he played for the bummers, they gave him a job at Windy Hill as a grounds keeper. Outside of the Essendon structure, he will be entirely lost.

At least O'Donnell has proven himself at another club, and one that has one 3 GFs in a row for that matter.

If we're going with a coach yet to prove himself in a senior capacity, O' Donnell is ahead by a mile.

If we get Eade or Wallace, then I dont understand why we didnt get them end of last year when both were available and Frawley's contract could not be renewed as we didnt make finals 2 yrs in a row.

By the by, Malthouse has similar clause in his contract. I've said all along that after last year GF, he will have to start again. He will never be able to get that playing group up after that capitulation. Go get Micky!!!
