The Essendon players threatened with demotion after last week's loss to the Kangaroos could yet keep their spot in the side, provided they can impress coach Kevin Sheedy on the training track.

With captain James Hird due to play his 200th game, the club's VFL side scheduled for a bye and the senior team's season now "on the line" after three straight losses, Sheedy indicated it was no time for a mid-season clean-out.

"We've said whoever trains well this week puts their hand up to stay in the side. It's all about attitude and if that's the case, I wouldn't want to put a foot wrong on the training track this week, I can assure you," Sheedy said.

"It's Hird's 200th game, so we've got to work out what we feel is the right sort of team to represent a great player of this club."

The gutless wonder has his contract now so what does he care - 3 more years guaranteed. I know this is harsh - but there would not be a better way to send a big message to the team that poor form and less than 100% efforts will not be tolerated than to drop someone for Hirdys 200th.

Worst possible timing for a bye.
We need to drop three or four players this week, and I personally couldn't care less if they get to play for Bendigo or not.

Weak as ****.

Henno, Hille, Rama and MJ will all be playing, mark my words.

Seemed to be a bit of urgency out there as well ...

Honestly some essendon supporters are an bunch of idiots who can't tolerate losing, spoilt lot i tells ya.

A coach is a friend to the players and must have faith in them.

God I Hope they stick it up your arses.

Sheeds knows more than you lot.

No not at all. I'd rather be losing games with youngsters in the teams than having a side who don't care what happens. It's obvious that he hasn't got the guts to punish those that have thrown in McAlister like games for the past few months.

Hille, Henneman, Ramma. To a lesser extent MJ.

Face it. We aren't going to do anything in september anyway and can't finish higher than 6th. I'd rather us worry about letting young kids get a run for half a game for the rest of the season.

Thank god we have Bitchmond this week.

God I Hope they stick it up your arses.

Like I said, we have Bitchmond this week.

Infact, I reckon they may come off with a win. That's how pathetic we are.

The best way for Sheeds to show he means business is to drop one or two Senior players on Hirdy's 200th.

If Hille still gets a game then heaven forbid...

If you look at our performances since 2002, not much has changed! We're also rans. We'll be also rans for the next few years if changes aren't made now to prepare for the future.

Players that were around in 2002. Hird, Lloyd, Lucas, Fletcher, JJ, MJ, Solomon, Rama, McVeigh, Rioli, Peverill, Bolton, Hille.

Our core group has definitely not changed a ****load.

McPhee has been a great pickup. Cupido was great last year. Murphy and Allan are going well this year, and Welsh has stepped up. But that doesn't really change things all that much.

thats what 12,13 players theres about 39 on a list.

If it hasn't changed alot since 2002 it certainly has since 2000.

But those are the core 12 or 13 players, the senior players, the players that are automatic (or almost automatic) selections each week. If you look at the sides we've put on the park, week in week out, for the past two to three years, you'd see that they all have about a dozen names in common. So the point is that the senior side hasn't changed a great deal, and we haven't improved a great deal since the 2001 GF. Obviously, we need to take more steps to rejuvenate the side.

you cant just throw a bunch of youngsters out on the park and magically rebuild for the future. There's more to it than that.

On the other hand, the way we persisted with a clearly past it Mercuri for the past three years, and also keep playing Joey when it's more than likely gonna be his last year, ain't gonna help the kids if they can't play coz those two occupy the spots

Like what? St Kilda and Brisbane have half their team(s) suspended?

Or maybe Port will have a bad case of the plague...

Maybe trashing hotel rooms in a noosa resort, but definately not on a football feild.

Ah yes, because we have so much to look forward to this year. Like losing by record margins to Port and St Kilda.

we follow the most successful club u wouldn't think it.
If you want to be one of the blinded one eye tw@ts that think we can win the flag year in year out go post over on BomberTalk. (http://www.essendonfc.com.au/bombertalk4/)

Some still think we can finish top 4. Ha!

What could there be more to giving young kids experience?

Look at 93.

Classic.

sadly you are spot on.

We don;t need to drop 20 players - just onje or 2. drop MJ - htat would bite the entire team. remember Caracella getting dropped in 2000 - about round 3 - think it was the freo game. Put a rocket up the senior lists @rse and they responded. Maybe need to do the same here.

Look at trade bait boy heffernan - is now starting to play some good footy because he ain't guaranteed a spot in the Dees team. Look at brisbane - same thing - guys don't perform they run around in the twos.

No. But where have I called for his head anywhere in here?

I'm simply asking him to stop being a pussy and make some hard and simple decisions. Drop Hille and Ramma. Hennemans sorted himself out unfortunately with a big injury. As much as I think he's a dud, Sam Hunt should get a game this week. Especially with Henneman out.

Fair enough if they fail this week then they're out.

And replace them with who?

Cartledge or Laycock to replace Hille.
Winderlich or Alvey to replace Ramma.
We have kids in the VFL who deserve a shot at the big time, and out-of-form players who can regain confidence at Bendigo.

Right on. Sounds like we're ****ed this weekend. Apparently NLM didn't train.

And Bolton. I know that you don't rate him, but you must admit that he has been fairly solid and reliable so far this year, and if he doesn't play our defence is a shambles. We'll have no tall defender with any reasonable amount of experience behind them.

Lucky for us, the Tigers may only have Richo as an experienced tall forward, with Ottens likely to play most of the game in the ruck.
