..or more particularly, the WAFL sides. Who's the honest, hard working bloke's side? Who's the complete nancy boy team? Who has the most supporters, who has the most dedicated ferals? Who's the breadline club fighting to carve out enough dough to field a side each week side? Etc etc...

Peel Thunder are the struggling side in the competition. They are coached by Garry Hocking. AFL listed players who play with them are Fremantle's Daniel Haines and Greg Edgcumbe. Rookie Dylan Smith (Fremantle) who played 13 games for the Kangaroos between 2001-03 plays with them each week.

As an avid fan of South Fremantle I have complete bias and completely see everything at WAFL level in red and white.

At South Fremantle we arguably have had the greatest talents to pull on a guernsey and at the same time fundamentally have a history of massive underachievement. Our traditional home is Fremantle Oval, which the purple people eaters decided to base themselves at. Strong financial performance as of late with a mass exodus of players through our strong colts program to AFL ranks.

Based in Fremantle, club has close ties to hard working, immigrant ethnic regions in croations, italians, portuguese etcetera. So based on that I'd say we are a working man's club. Fans are passionate but easily ****ed off after a loss.

Feel free to follow South as an era of domination is pending :D

Nancy boys
Claremont and Subiaco

Dedicated Ferals
Eas Perf

Breadline Club
Peel Thunder have been the laughing stock since the mid 90's after their inception. Will get their act together with a huge catchment area of players and could become a major dominant force in the years to come.

So, if I was to draw analogies with the SANFL:

South Freo = Eagles (Torrens mostly)
Claremont & Subi = Norwood & Sturt
East Perth = Port
Peel = South

Complete the exercise by matching Glenelg, Central, North and West to WAFL clubs.

West = low level of support mostly from the lower and welfare classes. consistently mediocre on-field. Never comes top, never bottom.

Glenelg = Power team of the 70s and 80s. Now couldn't win a chook in a raffle. Supporters are delusional, masochistic, or both.

Central = Mob from far north, current power team after years of non-achievement. Charismatic support.

North = existence characterised by periods of success and periods of failure. Currently on the up.

Hrm, I would have South Freo being the Port Adelaide, supposedly it was a dangerous place to be back in the heyday of the league. There was even a prison behind the oval, something sorely lacking from the Alberton Oval environs.

So a side named Royals has the feral supporters? And what's this about Victorians and East Perth?

East Perth have a lot of Victorian players.

What is the WAFL equivalent of West Adelaide? Try not to follow Uncle Steve's description of our supporters, some of us happen to be doing an honours degree :)

I would Subiaco have a similarity (minor as it is) to Port in the AFL.

Both choke in September.

Firstly a correction to premiership tally -

East Freo - 29
West Perth - 18
East Perth - 17

BTW Each of these sides won an "under-age" premiership in the 40's which are included in these totals. The real totals are arguably 28,17 & 16 but the WAFL insists on counting these and anyway it doesn't effect the top 3. The reason you often see EP's tally at one less is they tend not to count their 1944 win where other clubs do.

Anyway here's my view as an East Perth supporter.

Top 4 supported clubs are traditionally East Perth, West Perth, South Freo, East Freo.

East Perth = Too hard for me to comment on the perception of our supporter base - I know what its like for me but its hard to pretend to look-in from the outside. Easily the best supported these days. We have depended a fair bit of recruiting vs junior development the last 10 years or so but thats due to our traditional inner-city zone not producing the players it used to. The WAFL has mucked around with zoning a lot until recently with EP often getting a raw deal, but the most recent changes has helped balance things back towards our favour (finally).

West Perth = traditionally a lot of slav supporters from the inner city, earnt them the tag "Garlic Munchers". They have since relocated to Perth's northern suburbs. Arch enemy of EP - they are scum :O)

South Freo = previous description a pretty good one. Not sure what crowd figures they get these days but at games I've been to the Bulldog fans don't seem to come out in the numbers they used to. Atmosphere at Freo Oval is non-existant.

East Freo = Don't know how to describe their supporters really. Always a successful club and their fans have grown to expect it. But they've fallen on hard times the last couple of years and are likely to get their first ever wooden spoon (if you don't count their first season 1897 when they finished 4th out of 4 teams).

Subiaco = Traditionally a rather unsuccesful club, these days the power of the chequebook sees them consistently in the finals but with little to show for it. Subiaco is a rather affluent trendy area hence the club has a bit of a nancy tag. Their crowds have swelled a little this year and despite tradition I'd been inclined to say they should move into the "top 4 clubs" at the expense of one of the Freo sides.

Claremont = A very affluent area of Perth, and with the number of players recruited from Perth's expensive private schools (probably the same schools most of their fans went to) they have earnt the tag of "College Boys". Very nancy. Not well supported. I frequently meet people who became Claremont fans due to their success in the 80's but have never looked back since jumping on the Eagles bandwagon.

Swan Districts = A "working class" club with some feral supporters. I really enjoy going to games there - their fans can really get into it. Traditionally not very successful, but when they hit their stride they do it it style. Out of their 7 prems, 6 of them have been 3-in-a-rows.

Perth = Working class and very feral. Longest WAFL premiership drought (last win in '77). Like EP and WP were very strong in 60's and 70's and fell off the pace in the 80's, but unlike the other two are yet to revive themselves.

Peel = The new club and generally considered a joke, although now days its a pretty unfair assessment. Just as they looked like they were getting somewhere in 2002 with a credible 6th (only a win or two off 4th), they basically had to start over again when the issue of their license came up (again) and they lost all their good players (and coach). If the WAFL could ever settle the business with respect to their longevity they would get better as they would strength to retain their players and build.

So as a first generation aussie with Czech heritage, and as a supporter of the mighty west adelaide, i'd feel right at home as a West Perth supporter?
