St Kilda Football Club Review - Round 13 2001

St Kilda 13.9.87 v Richmond 19.12.126, Colonial Stadium.

Another game where the team had an opportunity to win but was unable to capitalise on an early lead. Our intensity at the football in the first 20 minutes, where we established a four goal lead, was terrific. The loss of Lenny Hayes through injury certainly didn't help an already depleted midfield, but it was our inability to use the football at critical times which again brought about the result. The Coaching Department in their weekly analysis of the Statistics uncovered some interesting results this week.

St Kilda is currently 16th in the competition as far as disposal of the football is concerned. Our kicking efficiency is only 81 % ( we kick the ball ineffectively 19% of the time ) which puts us 15th in the competition. With our handballing around the 80% mark we are 16th, bringing an overall effectiveness rating of approximately 81.5% which is 16th in the competition. Brisbane and Essendon are the leaders in this area with figures around 84-85%. Therefore we are not far off the mark. If each individual player can improve their effectiveness marginally we will be up there with the rest of the competition.

The weekend was not without some positives. Our defence performed reasonably well against the strong Richmond forwards. Fraser Gehrig held Matthew Richardson to just 3 marks & 8 possessions. Richardson is the Number 1 player in the competition for Contested Marks, and although he was perhaps restricted with injury, Gehrig continued his solid form in defence for 2001. He was well supported by Justin Plapp in the early stages of the match. Tim Elliott made a few errors but did reasonably well at Centre Half Back against a very difficult opponent in Ben Holland. Justin Peckett continued his solid form in the back half with 24 possessions, Aaron Hamill competed aggressively across half forward and Peter Everitt continued his form in the ruck.

The thoughts of Malcolm Blight in the post match interview sum up where the team is at the moment. "And right now the perception of St Kilda is that if we keep at them long enough they will crack eventually and they will turn the ball over. The players say we'll go back into our shell. Well let's break down the facade, let's not talk about the scoreboard, let's just talk about the issues on the ground." This certainly seemed to happen during the 2nd quarter when Richmond scored 8 goals to 2. In the end the St Kilda backline probably failed through weight of inside 50's ( Richmond 56, St Kilda 41 ) to the opposition, mainly due to a lack of quality players in the midfield.

The team now faces the difficult assignment of the Brisbane Lions this Saturday night at the Gabba. Lenny Hayes will need to be replaced by one of the players who participated in the Springvale v Coburg match. Five players were unavailable for the weekends game versus Richmond - Burke, Loewe, Harvey, Moyle & Lawrence - and all of these players will be out of action for the next few weeks

A big day at Moorabbin on Saturday with the eagerly awaited 1st game of Number #1 draft pick, Nick Riewoldt. Riewoldt participated in the Springvale Reserve Grade game, playing the first 15 minutes of each of the quarters. He came off the ground very early in the game through the blood rule, but returned ( in another jumper ) to show some fine dash & skills from the wing. He was tagged for the majority of the game but took 4 very strong marks in the 2nd quarter. He finished with about 12 possessions and a goal, but more importantly has pulled up from the game in fine condition. He is expected to play a full game at this level next week. The match also saw the return of Jason Traianidis from an ankle operation. "Triga" found plenty of the football across half forward during a full hitout, and as the game progressed his strong disposal skills came to the fore. Ben Walton was played in this game to give him some much needed ground time after spending long periods on the Springvale Senior bench. He had a mountain of possessions, whilst rookie Mark Wittison showed some encouraging form at Centre Half Forward.

In the main game Springvale were a much improved unit due largely to the efforts of St Kilda players who have played considerable senior football in 2001. Tony Delaney ( 20 poss'ns ), Jason Blake ( 15 poss'ns ), Robbie Powell ( 5 goals ) & Matthew Young ( 28 poss'ns ) were all fine players on the day, whilst Troy Schwarze appreciated the move from defence to a wing with his 3 long goals for the afternoon. Matthew Capuano ( 8 marks for 2 goals ) spent most of the day on the forward line due to the dominance of youngster Chris Oliver in the ruck. Oliver ( 15 poss, 5 marks ) completely dominated the ruck contests and is continuing to improve with each game, whilst Jason Cripps came on midway into the 2nd quarter but was still able to rack up 21 touches for the game. He is starting to find some touch in his ball-handling & has now played several games in succession. Justin Berry & Daniel Wulf also played but had limited time & impact.

The Springvale Scorpions have now won 8 games out of 11 and sit 3rd on the VFL ladder. The team plays the Northern Bullants at Preston on Sunday. The Reserves game begins at 11:20am with the main game at 2:10pm.

Interesting comment about Tim Elliott. Perhaps Waldron is trying to boost his stocks for a possible trade?

Based on the VFL report you wonder how Daniel Wulf was promoted?

i saw the springvale game and daniel wulf would have had 10 minutes ground time, at the most. perhaps they have to play him in the firsts so he can get a decent hit out something he doesn't get playing for springy.

oliver should be in the side instead of capuano, his game was outstanding. why don't they just promote him or give us a reason why not.

I cant understand why Oliver is not promoted to the Main List particularly as Hayes is now out for the rest of the season?
Why wait to the end of the season and use a draft pick to get him?

RapidFire,

I think the decision not to promote Chris Oliver at this stage comes down to the fact that because of our massive injury list we don't have any room in our salary cap to promote a rookie.

I don't think this is a bad thing. He has enormous talent and unlike someone like Koschitzke, has not been thrown in at the deep end so early. Let's see Chris finish the year off with Springvale and have a big pre-season in the weights room. We can add him to the senior list at the end of the year like we did with Davis at the end of 1999.

According to Blighty, everyone on our senior list that are not injured will be played in the next few weeks so he can have a good look at them. With more possible early draft picks, we are going to have another big cleanout.
