Thought I'd get in early! Well, it won't hippen overnight, but it will hippen :D thanks to the Kiwi Cricket board and their late scheduling of the Sri Lankan tests:

New Zealand v Sri Lanka
January 15-19 – First Test, Hamilton
January 22-26 – Second Test Wellington

So that means that between now and January 6, Sri Lanka will play four tests, while Australia will play nine. So congratulations to Shane Warne for achieving a truly incredible feat, and I have confidence that you will keep the record for longer than many pundits would predict. Good luck to Murali in his battle against the might of Bangladesh.

Sri Lanka:
Aug 04-08 v South Africa (h) Galle Stadium
Aug 11-15 v South Africa (h) Colombo

Nov 18-22 v Bangladesh (a) Chittagong
Nov 25-29 v Bangladesh (a) Dhaka

Australia
Oct 06-10 v India (a) Bangalore
Oct 14-18 v India (a) Madras
Oct 26-30 v India (a) Nagpur
Nov 03-07 v India (a) Mumbai

Nov 18-22 v New Zealand (h) Brisbane
Nov 26-30 v New Zealand (h) Adelaide

Dec 16-20 v Pakistan (h) WACA
Dec 26-30 v Pakistan (h) MCG
Jan 02-06 v Pakistan (h) SCG
Australia's tour dates for New Zealand were also announced.

New Zealand v Australia
17/02 – Twenty20 International, Aus v NZ, Auckland
19/02 – First one-dayer, Wellington
22/02 – Second one-dayer, Christchurch
26/02 – Third one-dayer, Auckland
02/03 – Fourth one-dayer, Hamilton
05/03 – Fifth one-dayer, Napier

March 10-14 – First Test, Christchurch
March 18-22 – Second Test, Wellington
March 26-30 – Third Test, Auckland

Total vAus vSL vZim vBan
Warne 527 - 59 6 0
Murali 527 50 - 87 20

Therefore, v (ENG, IND, NZ, PAK, RSA, WI):

T O R W Ave Econ SR
Warne 98 4667.2 11781 462 25.50 2.52 60.61
Murali 64 3728.3 8751 370 23.65 2.35 60.46

Interestingly, Murali has played more tests v Zimbabwe (14) than any other country. On the figures above, you could argue that Murali is still the greater bowler based on stats alone.

Better stats doesn't make you a better bowler, Warne is still the better bowler overall, he produces his best when the pressure is on and the match is there for the taking, while Murali doesn't. Warne owns Murali as a matchwinner.

Anyway, Warnie has a great record against NZ and Pakistan, so if he bowls well he'd get quite a lot there.

Show us the figures away from Sri Lanka and Australia.

With Murali playing a couple of tests against the Bangas, he could easily take 25 wickets in those 2 tests alone. Add another 10 - 15 for the NZ tests, and Murali could go 35 - 40 Wickets ahead.

Warne plays 4 tests against the second best test team in India. Over those tests he may get say 20 wickets.

Then plays NZ and Pakistan - would need to try and get another 20 wickets. As Brisbane, Waca and Melbourne are likely to suit fast bowlers. No sure thing Warney will get the record.

Warnie has a great record against the Pakistanis, in fact he has the best record against them compare to any other nation. Provided the chance he'll take quite a few up at the Gabba.

NZ, depends, they ain't great players of spin, so I'd assume Warnie has a few chances there.

I fail to see your logic ... why would Murali be more likely to get "35-40 wickets against Bangas/NZ" than Warne getting similar numbers versus India ??

Surely there's the same number of wickets to go round if they both play 4 tests !?

It will be a very tough ask to bowl india out twice if the last tour and indeed the last series is anything to go by, and also Warne typically shares the bowling far more than Murali.

Warne won't rip through India like Murali can Bangladesh, and when you dont rip through sides the wickets tend to spread out to all bowlers

Fair rationale, nicko.

However, I think we underestimate the ability of Chaminda Vaas to rip through a batting lineup. He's particularly effective at polishing off the tail in a damn hurry, thus depiving Murali of a crack at a large haul.

Murali also usually has a bunch of other spinners competing for the same wickets like Jayasuriya, Chandana, and to a lesser extent Herath.

No less imposing backups than Lehmann and Katich.

Dharmasena, Samaraweera and sometimes Dilshan, too. They've got a huge spinning lineup - 6 bowlers, but only one leggie. And even then, Chandana doesn't spin it much.

Bugger - bit too late for my liking, might not be able to go watch after all.

What will the weather be like in NZ in late March?

With a bit of luck, Warnie should have to record by the end of October 2004 and hold it for a good while.

Warnie could play 17 Tests between now an the Best v the Rest matches in October 2005; the boggle eyed cheating runt might only have 10 in that time.
