Taken from the age:St Kilda coach Malcolm Blight will deliver this week on an early promise to play every player on the club's senior list this season.

Against Adelaide on Friday night, the injury-ravaged Saints will introduce two newcomers and a player who has not played for more than three years, bringing the number of players used at senior level this season to 39.

In will come Nick Riewoldt, the No.1 choice in last year's national draft, the rookie-listed Chris Oliver, and Jason Cripps, who has not played since early in 1998.

Riewoldt, recruited from the Gold Coast last year, had an early setback when he had knee surgery last Christmas before complications restricted him further.

The 18-year-old played for the first time for Springvale reserves a fortnight ago, and last weekend took 14 marks on a wing and across half- forward in the senior VFL team.

Oliver, who turned 19 yesterday, is expected to be the second player promoted from the Saints' rookie list this season, behind Stephen Milne.

St Kilda football operations manager Brian Waldron last night said the Saints had room in their salary cap to upgrade ruckman Oliver after placing captain Robert Harvey on the long-term injury list.

"We've sought permission from the AFL and it'll be a formality," Waldron said.

The 24-year-old Cripps has finally overcome a recurring hamstring problem that has prevented him from playing for more than three years, in which time he has twice had surgery to re-attach his hamstring to the bone.

Last weekend, he gathered 32 possessions in the VFL, in only the second time he has managed three consecutive games since the 1997 grand final.

Defender Daniel Wulf became the latest St Kilda player to make the first team when he made his debut against Brisbane at the Gabba last Saturday.

After this weekend's round 15, St Kilda will have played more players at senior level than any other club this year, two more than the top-of-the-ladder Bombers.

just got the official media release of this news which i'll post below, great news indeed.

i've had my doubts about whether cripps could or should return but now that he will play again i can only admire his dedication and commitment. i'm sure every saints barracker will have their fingers crossed that cripps can get through the game intact and it would be a fantastic bonus if he could reach the potential that he briefly showed us in 1997.

i hope crippa leads the side out friday night so the rest of the players can see what can be achieved with dedication, courage and hard work.

chris oliver has been a revelation for springvale this year. our recruiting has often been suspect but whoever identified him as a kid with potential should be commended. i saw him play 2 weeks ago and he turned the game on his own in the third quarter with fantastic ruck clearances from the middle. it's ironic that a kid who was passed up by every team in the national draft will make his debut with the number 1 draft pick.

nick reiwoldt, the great white hope. 14 marks and a booming left foot goal in his second game after a 10 month lay off, lifts the excitement levels a bit. finally we get to see him play. blight must have a very high opinion of him to be playing him in the seniors after only 2 runs in the lower grades. i have been told by a few old timers that the last time a young man created this much excitement and expectation at the club was when big carl walked into training as a 17 year old. maybe it's the white hair, if he's anywhere near the player ditterich was then he will be a great player.

Media Release

Jason Cripps, Nick Riewoldt and Chris Oliver will play for St Kilda this Friday night against the Crows.

Jason Cripps has not played AFL football since 1998. He has suffered two serious hamstring injuries (May 1998 & February 1999) and his remarkable comeback will be completed this week. Cripps has played the last four weeks in the Springvale seniors. Over the last two weeks he has gathered 21 possessions v Coburg and 32 possessions v Bullants.

Nick Riewoldt was the number one draft selection at the 2000 National Draft. He had minor knee surgery before Christmas last year and further compilations have kept him on the sidelines for most of this season. Riewoldt has played in the Springvale reserves and the Springvale firsts over the past two weeks.

Chris Oliver celebrated his 19th birthday yesterday with the news he was being promoted from the Rookie list for Robert Harvey, who has been placed on the long-term injury list. Oliver was the number one selection in the 2001 Rookie Draft. He has been rucking for Springvale and was first ruck for the Victorian State team that played South Australia three weeks ago. Oliver was originally recruited from Campbelltown/NSW-ACT U18s

How good is that???

:D :D :D

- Cripps returning after more than 3 years on the sidelines. What a story!
- The best youngster in the country in Riewoldt making his long awaited debut.
- Chris Oliver getting promoted from the rookie list after being a revelation in the VFL this year.

Hopefully we can get back a few of our supporters that may have dropped off and get a big crowd on Friday night.

Should be a big one!

sainter,

once again the power brokers have been proactive by showing that the club still has something positive to offer for the rest of the season. just when we were all thinking that this season was just another disaster in a long list of disasters they spin some exciting news to gets us all interested and hopeful again.

if we can manufacture a win this friday it will give us all a huge boost. those saints supporters that have dropped off will get back on board pretty quickly if they can see that we have turned the corner.

maybe blight will use cripps as motivation for the team this friday, whatever it takes a win is a must.

Oh I don't like this one little bit. :) Here I thought the Crows were going to come over and win reasonably comfortably over a depleted Saints team devoid of passion or inspiration, now Blighty is using this Friday as the major unveiling of the No. 1 pick, the long awaited return of a grand final hero, and some other kid off the rookie list. :( :( :(

I bet the Saints come out fired up and give us a real working over, ending our finals hopes :(

Or maybe we might just be keen enough to pummell Malcolm's new team into oblivion, and stick it right up Blighty's arse. A few interesting scenarios there.....
