Hi Footy Fans...
The gap between the Bulldogs and the Eagles has widened slightly, another loss for the second-placed side has seen the Doggies move a game clear and looking likely to secure the prized top spot and second-semi final berth. With the finals starting in four weeks, North Adelaide keeps its hold on fourth spot with its win on the weekend with West Adelaide hot on its heels and two more sides hoping to rip the rug from under the Bloods paws.
So now to the SANFL wrap-up for Round 20.
Friday night mayhem down at the Parade, and South Australia's original local derby saw Norwood play host to Port Adelaide. The Magpies started off strong, taking the first quarter lead of 15 points. However the Redlegs hit back in the second quarter, leading at the long break by a single point. The second half was horrid for the visitors in front of goal, kicking 1.6 but Norwood didn't get too far ahead themselves with their score of 2.1. Unfortunately for the Magpies, the fade out bug hit them again in the final term when they kicked four behinds. Norwood added a further 3.1 to win by 17 points, securing the Williams-Gallagher Trophy for the fifth time in as many years.
The next day at Adelaide Oval, South Adelaide and Glenelg met up for the Clash of the Cats. It was a very inaccurate day for both sides, Glenelg starting off the worst in front of goal, the first quarter saw the Tigers with seven scoring shots to six, with the Panthers leading by 14 points. The next term, Glenelg found the big sticks a bit easier to find kicking 35 points to South's one behind. In the second half, the inaccuracy continued for both teams. A total of 45 scoring shots was booted for the day, Glenelg ran out winners by 28 points. Both coaches not happy with their charges, Tiger coach David Noble quoted as being 'disappointed' with a 20 behind match and Robert Pyman? 'Our workrate was non-existent--bordering on pathetic, I thought".
Another Battle of the Birds for the Roosters this past weekend, this time coming up against the Eagles at Prospect. The Eagles, once undefeated for half the season, again found themselves against some determined opposition and after leading at quarter time the Roosters ripped that lead from their grasp before the long break--North up by 19 points. The visitors didn't get much closer after that, the Roosters keeping a steady lead for the rest of the game. Danny Hargraves struck again, bagging five goals in North's 16 point win.
In the ABC Match of the Day, the Double Blues hosted the Bulldogs on at Unley Oval. Speaking of Unley Oval, the ground was far from perfect, mudholes littered the northern goal and parts of the centre and put out a rank odour. But the ground was cleared anyway, not that it mattered to the Bulldogs, who ended up leading by four goals at the end of the first half. The home side closed to within eight points in the third quarter, but without Brant Chambers making any impact at their goal, Central just went their merry way, adding five goals in the final quarter to win by 32 points.
