Sweet. I thought it was going to be a lot harder than that.

Dewy is just so hot and cold.....but I would really hate to lose him. I just think he needs to get his head back to Footy. He is electric when he is turned on....just look at those 50 mtr passes.
When he's cold.....man he is Ice!!
I think Dewy's problem is not his weight, or that he is not good enough......I think he has a pussy on his mind......and I dont mean the Cats ;) :D
Maybe he needs a wake up call like Kinger's had!!
Mind you.....he could fall into the cat of my sig!!

That could be used as an excuse for the past 6 months but previous to that he was still very hot & cold.
As good as he can be will he ever win a game for you?? Kicks swags of goals generally when we're having a big day out. Ok he played well in the final v NM (which he almost missed) but i reckon that was to save his career as much as anything. Probably responds a bit to a kick up the arse.

Somehow we need him to think that each week is his last. If he thinks that, I think that he is a potential match-winner.

most definately dewy can win a game off his own boot, but as mentioned a number of times, he is VERY inconsistent. Personally, i dont want him traded...i think there is a HUGE potential for him to be in our top 5-6 players if he can get his mind right..and he needs to learn to mark better above his head..he can be soft in that area
well, its worked wonders for kingas, but i think choco just needs to really give him the hard word, and scare the **** out of him. Hopefully he can be dangerous for us in sept..along with junior B.

I reckon he is a bit of a front runner. Needs other players playing well to bring him into the game, an opportunist, not a match winner from his own (& his alone) efforts. Sure can kick quick, long goals, but usually on the end of someone elses good work. If we're having a bad day those opportunities dry up pretty quick and he is left to "chase" his own kicks, something with which i reckon he struggles with, be it due to fitness, mindset whatever...

He turned 25 today. Potential should be realised by now. Mind u tennis commentators will probably still be talking about Phillipoussis's "potential" at 30 ...

I think Dewy has been disappointing over the length of his career. That may be due to coaching and how he has been positioned as a permanent FP, but when you think back to the wraps on him as 17 year-old, one really would have hoped he could have made it as a damaging, top-class midfielder.
I think he has been inconsistent CONSISTENTLY.
Even in the years where he has kicked 40+ goals (unquestionably a very good return even from a permanent small forward), his goals have come in clusters of matches, followed by lean patches lasting for up to 6-8 weeks where he has hardly touched the footy.
He strikes me as a player who had it easier than most as a junior because of his excellent foot disposal and so got lazy in other facets of his game. He definitely doesn't get enough footy, and for his size he doesn't take anywhere near enough contested marks as a forward (cf Matera, Medhurst). When he goes to bump a player, he often comes off second best which just is incredulous considering his body habitus.
I see him as a front-runner. When we are on song as a footy club, he looks great and can kick a huge bag. It has been a long time since we saw him really do well in a losing cause or a close-fought game: it has happened but not for 12 months or more.
Whether we keep him or not will depend on what is being offered. I would take a quality midielder for him, no doubt. Thompson and a second round pick would be a definite swap IMO.
At the end of the day, I prefer having small forwards like Surjan, Cassisi and Mahoney, who might kick half the season tally of Dew, but will fight like buggery to lock the footy in and support their teammates, while keeping their opponents accountable as well. Dewy doesn't do enough of that for mine.
With Surjan, Mahoney, Ebert and Byron Pickett, I think Stuey will need to develop other dimensions to his game if he is to be a valuable player for us in the longterm future.
I'd hate to lose Dew, though I have to concede a lot of the criticisms about him are true. But a guy who kicks the ball as well as Dew is worth his weight in gold. He's had a poor year, but players can certainly recover from one poor season. Keep him I say.

I would have thought a guy who can get the ball is worth his weight in gold. Dewy can kick the ball a long way be he isn't even really doing that at the moment.
Trade him.
I think Dews problem is OUR expectations.
He is much better value than some others on our list. He's just not quite the consistant match winner we'd all like.
Sure, most players are tradeable for the right deal, but I have no problem with the extra dimension Dew adds to the team. A similar player at the Lions would be Caracella.
Dale Lewis(retired) at Sydney was also similar, a natural sportsman, laconic style, but added an important dimension to the team.
So I'd stick with him (above some others) and only consider trading him for the right deal, not 'cos of his contribution to the team.

Excellent post PJ. Totally agree.

He's the luxury we can afford to trade. He does add an extra dimension but I think we all know where that dimension is ;).
We have sufficient small forwards not to play him there. I would rather he worked hard and got onto a wing.
