Western Bulldogs young gun Adam Cooney has been awarded the round 21 National's AFL rising star nomination.

The 18-year-old, who was the first player selection in last year's National's AFL draft, has played 18 matches in his first AFL season, since crossing from West Adelaide.

Cooney made his AFL debut in round one against West Coast and while his effort of remaining in the best 22 this season is a fine achievement in itself, his ability to step-up late in the season has been significant.

In the past three outings, Cooney has amassed 69 disposals, which included 28 possessions against Port Adelaide in Darwin and 25 touches against the Kangaroos last Saturday night.

He was widely regarded as best-on-ground for his performance against the Roos, which earned him the rising star nomination, but he was also desperately unlucky not to be given the round 20 title.

For the majority of the season, Cooney has had cameo appearances due to his nurturing at AFL level and in his opening 15 matches, he collected 133 touches.

Cooney entered the AFL with enormous raps, having been a dual All-Australian in the 2002-03 National's AFL under-18 championships and winning the SANFL under-17 best and fairest award in 2002.

He was also a member of West Adelaide's grand final side in the SANFL in 2003.

About bloody time.
Maybe the comment about being unlucky that he missed last week
was an attempt at an apology because the selectors weren't watching?

I hope that is actually not the case because while there have been a few
good players out there getting the 'Star' I would say that he is a very good chance of winning it outright, *provided of course that the selectors are actually bothering to look at him*

Davie is probably the biggest threat, but when you consider teh number of games he has missed, along with the fact being in the middle and getting clearances is a much harder job then sneaking around the forward line, means that we might get one more piece of joy prior to the trade/draft period.

I know someone else listed the names of other 'Stars' but I can't remember them all. I thought Davie was the only major standout. Can some informed source put that list back up!?!?!? :o

Good call on Rivers, he too has shown things, but he has had quite a few more bad games then Cooney has.

Good call on Rivers, he too has shown things, but he has had quite a few more bad games then Cooney has.Been smashed in the second half of the year in most of his games.Hadley has been forgotten a little because he is a bit older but he averages more touches a game than Cooney but then again he probably gets more game time.Cooney wont get it and probably fair enough given that he didn't do alot in the first half of the year regardless of whether it was his fault or not.

Who has performed consistently for the entire year that is eligible?
Noone has.
It depends upon the criteria that has been set;

I cannot see the criteria as 'most games by an eligible player'

Is the criteria the most posessions in aggregate?
'' '' '' the most consistent?

Personally I think the criteria is which kid shows the most promising signs for the future based on what he has currently shown during the year.

Cooney can get it.

Its now a question of whether the selectors still have that 'romantic' notion that swept the AFL earlier this year and recall things better then they were for Davie, OR maybe its an advantage to have a better second half to the year so its still fresh in the minds.
Maybe it also helps to consider how the player played in the sort of team he was playing for. If Cooney played for the Lions he would have had 35+ posessions over the past few weeks, especially at home. Thats why he is better prospect and delivered more then Hadley!

I think for memory, the rising star award is judged on a 5-4-3-2-1 vote each week. (i may be wrong)

eg Round 21 votes:
5 Cooney
4 Hadley
3 Cross
2 Tenace
1 Waters

therefore it doesnt really matter if a player has been consistant through out or just had 4 or 5 ripping games, whoever has the most votes at the end of round 22 wins.
