View Full Version : End Of Year Delistings

It will be hard to decide who will end up leaving at the end of the year. Im sure there will be 1 or 2 players that noone wants to go that will end up being delisted or traded.

These are the names of players that are under the pump to keep their spots on the list

Harwood, Lockwood, Lyle, Koulouriotis, Brogan, French, Bassett, Poulton, Morgan, Thurstans, D Murray, M Stevens, Steinberner, Bond, Bishop, Mead (reitrement), Paxman (retirement).

Realistically all of those may be in a bit of trouble at the end of the year, but also we cant drop half our squad.

Ill look at each one in depth

Mark Harwood - 23, 28 games, 0 this year.
Has always struggled to cement a spot in the side. First as a defender then as a forward. was consistent last year till he did his shoulder, and hasnt played yet this year. He is in good form in the SANFL at the moment but could be in trouble at the end of the year if he goes out of form again. Id like to see him stay. Likelihood of staying - 65%

Bowen Lockwood - 23, 49 games, 3 this year.
Has the potential to be big but lacks the effort. We all know about his back problems, not its just form problems. He is definatly on his last chance. If he can get in the side by the end of the year he might be safe, but if he doesnt then Mark might of had enough. Id like to see him stay, id like to see him be big, but he is 50/50. - 50%

Brayden Lyle - 28, 114 games, 6 this year.
The end of the road for Brayden. A terrific clubman but his skills have dropped off. I cant see him staying, especially with all our young midfielders. Time to go Brayden.
Likelihood of staying - 10%

Paul Koulouriotis - 19, 3 games, 0 this year
A midfielder who has really struggled in his two years at Port. Only got a game last year thru injuries to other midfielders. He looks ok...but he has struggle finding the ball and has been injured basically all year with reoccuring hamstrings - at 19 thats not a good sign. Maybe one more year as he still is young.
Im not fussed if he stays or goes
Likelihood of staying - 50%

Dean Brogan - 23, 2 games, 2 this year
Only really on the list because of our big men injuries. Looks impressive but i dont think he would get a game in front of Primus, Lade, French. If i was too chose between Ackland and Deano id choose Ackland because he is younger. Id love to see him stay and get more time this year but i think he will be dropped at seasons end.
Likelihood of staying - 20%

Barnaby French - 26, 39 games, 0 this year
Had a down year last yaer, and has had two broken legs this year. Will be back in a few weeks so he may get a chance to get back in the side for good. Id like to see him stay.
Likelihood of staying - 75%

Scott Bassett - 23, 7 games, 3 this year
Whenever he gets a game he looks great but he just cant get into the first string side. He does look alright, but has been on the list since the start and hasnt played many games. Id like to see him get more of a go.
Likelihood of staying - 50%

Jared Poulton - 24, 32 games, 6 this year
It is doubtful he will be dropped, but you just wonder if he would get a game in front of Bond, Wilson and Guerra when all are fit. I love Poults, he is my 2nd favourite player but the fact he couldnt get a game early this year even with strong SANFL form looks bad. He will stay but should be on notice to work very very hard this year and next.
Likelihood of staying 90%

Adam Morgan - 19 - 0 games
This guys story is pretty sad. He looks so impressive when he plays but he just gets injured basically every game he does play. Has only played 2 or 3 games at north this year. I cant see him staying and he has been on our list now for three years. Id like to see him get fit and show us what he has got, he could be great in the ruck or in defence.
Likelihood of staying - 15%

Thurstans - 20 - 0 games
Has been one of sturts best players this year. I like him and will be a good replacement when mead or paxman retires. He looked dead in the water at the start of the year, but i think if it was any other season, he would of played the majority of games with the Power. Seems to have saved himself with his SANFL form.
likelihood of staying - 75%

Derek Murray - 20, 16 games, 2 this year
has looked alright so far this year. Has played better than any other season. Again has been on the list for three years without cementing a spot. Has toughened up and looks to have improved his skills. Will probably stay
Likelihood of staying - 75%

Michael Stevens - 20, 8 games, 0 this year
Probably would have played 8 or 9 games if we hadnt of had such a strong midfield this year. I cant see him staying as he hasnt done anything once he gets into the AFL side. Tradebait to North.
Likelihood of staying - 25%

Nathan Steinberner - 24, 19 games, 3 this year
I got no idea why he was kept on in the first place. I dont like him, he is a negative player and stuffs up a lot. Has been on the list since day 1 and hasnt ever looked like getting a regular game.
Likelihood of staying - 0% (hopefully)

Shane Bond - 27, 91 games, 0 this year
This may be harsh but he might be under threat. One of our better players in our first few years. He will probably be in the side within a fortnight hopefully. Will be great to see him back. I dont think he will go unless he re-does his knee.
Likelihood of staying - 90%

Matt Bishop - 27, 35 games, 3 this year
Has been strong for South and has dserved a game. Cant seem to get in front of other players in the list for a first string spot in the side. He should stay as he is a valuable contributor.
Likelihood of staying - 70%

Darren Mead - 30, 101 games, 14 this year
Would never get dropped i dont think but may retire. He is 30 and hasnt been as good as past years. He may decide to give it away.
Likelihood of staying - 75%

Stephen Paxman - 31, 200 games, 15 games this year
Again may decide to retire. Is old and has had a great career.
His form has been indifferent. He did say he could play on for another three years tho
Likelihood of staying - 75%

So out of that i would say - Brogan, Lyle, Steinberner,M Stevens, Morgan and Kouloriotis will not be at our club at the end of the year and maybe Harwood and Lockwood depending on form.

Please excuse me from intruding on your board (sorry!), but I was just wondering what's happend to Barnaby French. Wasn't he Port's best ruckman in 1999? I'm sure he would have been leading the hitouts for you guys sometime during that year and IMO he'd be one to hold on to... unless of course Port wanted to trade him for another promising ruckman in, say, Trent Knobel of the Lions. What do you guys think?

Nah he wasnt our hitout leader. That was Brendon Lade. Frenchy didnt do a bad job tho, definatly was a fine backup ruckmen in 99 without Primus. French borke his leg in the Ansett Cup Grand Final this season against you guys...he then played a comeback game with his SANFL side Sturt about 6 weeks ago and he re fractured the same break so he was sidelined again. I think he is ok now and returned to footy last week.

Just to fill you in Macca, Bowen Lockwood is gone. I was talking to someone very, very high up at Port who said that regardless of what he does before the end of the year, he'll be trade bait come October. Nothing to do with his football ability ... it's more about team discipline and the fact that they have to keep dragging him out of Joplins at 5am most mornings.

Well thanks Macca. I find it hard to discuss delistings since a lot of the players you obviously don't see a lot of. PLus I hate being negative about players. I see a few worrying signs from Guerra and Poults seems to be harder at it, at least in my view.

Good discussion topic.
Macca I hope you are wrong about Brogan. I rate him and think he will be a good player for us. I think this year has shown us that you need back up ruckmen. How would the Crows (and other sides) have covered the loss of 3 or 4 ruckmen this season like we have had to. I think Ackland looks like a forward option and French may the one in trouble if we infact cut a ruckman. Perhaps this seasons trading/draft will focus on another key defender (to cover ageing Mead and Paxman). Thurstans looks to be the likely option but unproven at AFL level
I would say the ones in trouble are:
Lyle
Steinberner
Bishop
Morgan (agree with your comments)
Bond
Harwood
Trade options:
Stevens (can we swap him for Pickett !)
Koulouritis
Poulton
D Murray (last 2 weeks have been encouraging)
Lockwood
Bassett
French

Does anyone think we will promote the rookies:
Hall or Hollands.

I would hope that HOllands gets at least a year on the senior list. He is a real good player. He has already had a go at Richmond and did reasonable, and i think he has pushed his game up another level and deserves a shot with the Power. Hall - altho he is a fantastic young player, i dont think we need another player like him in the side, and Hollands is the better option.

I have not seen much of him this season, however would it be fair to say that he is like a Danny Morton with more polished skills.
I wonder if our midfield would also benefit from another tough ballgetter and for this reason Hall may also be considered.

Besides the obvious one..........LYLE, I think D Murray must GO. He is too small for the AFL and he's also not skillfull enough to cover his lack of size. If were serious, he must be delisted.

I see Shane Bond has done his hamstring again. He will have to be delisted at the end of the year. I can't see him comming back to the form he had in the the early years. I think lyle and Steinberner will also go.

As far as Lockwood goes he could be used as trade bait but I would like to see him play against the Crows this week. I beleive he is a class player and deserves every opportunity to regain his form. I would hate to see him go and become a star player at another club.

I know it was only against North Adelaide but I did notice that Lockwood kicked 10-1 and took 15 marks playing for Centrals yesterday. I also see that he didn't want the players to carry him off the field last week after the Essendon game to celebrate his 50th game for the club.

Could that poor effort against Essendon be the wake up call he needed. Hopefully he can now turn his career around after that 10 goal effort yesterday and play out the rest of the season for the Power. An inform Bowen Lockwood would be a huge bonus to Port's fowrard line.

would be an interesting call to get rid of lockwood. we have not really been humiliated by any of our delistings coming back to bite us on the arse, he could be one. But how long do you keep someone on your list based entirely on potential ?

I think this is not the year to trade him. I don't think we would get much for him at this stage. Depends what is in the draft I suppose but the chances of a marking forward being available when we geta pick looks pretty small (hopefully our first pick will be about 18 !!!

In my opinion we will be one of the clubs that others will chase, in the view of making a trade, after all, look at the goldmine of ruckmen we have

Trade bait will be one of the 2nd string ruckmen, plus:-
Michael Stevens
Bowen Lockwood
Mark Harwood
plus a lot of others

I tend to agree with you. Would not want to trade any of our ruckmen, however if an excellent trade was on offer then you have to make tough decisions. I didn't want to see Matthew Bode go, however I have gotten over it. If we do trade a ruckman how would everyone rate them at present. I think this is a bit difficult due to the inexperience of Brogan and Ackland and the long term absence of both Lade and French.
My gut feel is that the 2 we must keep are the 2 that played on Sunday !

I think these are 3 untouchables: Primus, Lade and Ackland.
Primus for obvious reasons, Lade is versatile and mighty good, and Ackland is young and looks more atheletic then the others and can play forward.

I would probably offer French up for trade as I think Brogan is more versatile, and we would probably get more for French. Plus means he can't play for Sturt ;)

Geelong wants Bowen Lockwood big time and has already starting talking about a trade ... Port is going to be a big winner out of this one.
