View Full Version : Memories of past Essendon vs Kangaroos games
What have been your memories of past Essendon-Roos clashes. What stands out?
Is it the 1999 game where Carey kicked 10, and the Roos still got beaten? Was it the game in 1993, when we had them down for the count, and Carey won the game for them in the last quarter? Is it the game in the wet in '96, which was one of the best wet weather games I have seen (we lost), or was it last years great finals match!!! Or perhaps it was last years Round 13 opening quarter of 7.5.47 to 0.0.0
Mine would have to be last year's Qulaifying Final.
An exhibition of pure football at it's finist. Will stick in my memory for a long time!

cant beat the qualifying final last year
lloyd's 100th, 125 point win
its was all sensational
the ansett cup grand final was sensational aswell, jj's bump was just about the best ive ever seen
Wow, for good footy, it would have to have been the 1999 game, where Carey kicked 10, and Lloydy kicked... was it 7? Including a goal that came very close to being goal of the year. Even when we were winningby about 30 points, that game was exciting, just because of the standard of football being played.
But from an Essendon point of view, you couldn't go past the 125 point win last year, with Lloydy's 100th goal. That was a great day.

This year's opener, cause I went to it :)
It was the first of the six matches that I saw during my six-month
visit to Melbourne this year, and my second overall. It was also my first
night game.
I still remember the North player who lie on the ground shaking for a few minutes
after being injured and the ire that it drew from everyone else for a few days after.
Was that the night that Mercuri got mistakenly reported instead of someone else?
Guess my memory isn't too sharp, considering it's only been four months.
the 99 game for me- while the qlfying final was great to watch, the 99 game was when I first truly beleived we had become a power side in the AFL. It was when I first thought "sh*t- we can really win the flag"- the bulldogs game that year I had similar thoughts, but the fact that we finally got one over the Kangas who had bullied us around for so long, seemed like a clear sign of how far we'd come. (if my memory serves me, we beat them in the first match against them that year, but North was missing many of their top players, Carey, King and a few others- so that wasnt such a big win).
Who could forget Careys or Lloyds spectacular goals ??? Just an absolute football spectacle that game.
Heres hoping for another shoot-out this sunday.
(i also wont forget that final in 98- but lets not talk about that:()
I've got a few:
1985 Windy Hill - Comin' off our first loss to the hated Baggers in 5 years, the Bombers hit 'the Hill' with steam coming outta their ears and in an awesome first half, smash the hapless 'Roos to lead by 100....yes...100 points at half time. Some wacky coaching moves by Sheeds after half time results in a winning margin of "only" 104 points. Tim Watson bags 5, Alan Ezard 4.
1993 MCG - Bombers waste many chances in front of goal, resulting in a slender 3/4 time lead. Carey destroys us in the last quarter with an awesome indvidual performance, confirming my opinion he's the best footballer i've seen. This wasn't to be the last time we were burnt by 'the King' in the early/mid '90's. A loss, but a great game of footy.
1999 MCG - One of the games of the decade. This match had everything, who could forget 'Bad' Barry Young wanting to take the entire North team on by himself?...fantastic stuff. Lloydy's 7...including the out of mid-air banana and 10 from that man
Carey...remember his left foot banana against the boundary in the first quarter?....brilliant.
But my favorite is last years Qualifying Final - Total domination, the greatest performance i've seen from an Essendon team. Lloyd's ton capping off a perfect day. Also, seeing our good BigFooty mate "windyhill' on the ground, gettin' his mug on the box after givin' big bad Micky Martyn a verbal when Lloydy slotted his 100th was an amusing aside.
Please, 'windy' tell us again..what did yer say to Mick? ;)
where's wally?
Greetings bomber fans,
Of all the great games mentioned, I would have to rate the 93 one as a real highlight. It was the year North emerged to be a really top side, and that victory over the Bombers was a real turning point for the club IMO. Of course, Essendon went on to win the flag that year, but it heralded the start of a great rivalry.
99 Round 17 was without doubt the most complete game, highlighted by 44 goals being kicked (from memory, and some sensational ones at that), some good old-fashioned biffo, brilliant performances from Carey and Lloyd and a 60-odd thousand crowd (a new experience for a North supporter :D )
As you all know, the Bombers have been on top in recent times. I hope this changes sooner rather than later, though I'm not that confident. I'll be there on Sunday cheering the team on, and while us winning would be against the odds to say the least, I'm hopeful of a red hot go, which is all you can ask.
Hope you didn't mind me using your board :D
That 1999 game goes without peer for a high quality contest. It had everything. Great skills, great goals, a bit of biffo, and was a high scoring encounter.
If we could witness another such spectacle on Sunday, I would leave the MCG happy regardless of who wins.
That game in the wet in 1996 or 97 when Carey was BOG and Che ********-Collins kicked that arsey goal off the ground from about 50m out was also a great game, with very good skills being shown by both sides in the wet weather.
Whilst last years final just about had it all, my favourite clash goes waaaaayyy back. 1984. Rd 5. Arden St. Went with my old man, stood in the outer. Aahh those were the days.
Nth got the jump on us and were 5 goals to the good a qtr time. A sensational 8 goal second term saw us in front at the half by 9 points. A closish 3rd quarter saw us down a goal at the final break. Goal for goal in the last quarter with us getting home by 2 points. I remember Harvey kicking one from the square towards the end to put us in front. All in all a memorable day and a great win.
Arch, yeah '99 was the fiorst time we'd beaten Nth with Carey ibn the side since the early 90's.
P.S Nice avatar Adrian!

Definately the Rd 13 last year.... nothing quite like destroying a team in the first 30 minutes... that is what set up the 125pt victory in the finals... you don't recover from maulings like that in a hurry!

faaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrk.

The qualifying final last year, as it was special with Lloyd's 100th
goal and also the winning margin. plus going on to win the Premiership...great stuff.
The 1999 game, was right in front of Lloydy when he took a shot at that in mid air. Couldn't beleive it.
Last years Final was awesome, never seen anything like it. Getting to round on the ground was a bonus, although didn't get near Lloydy as I had to run from the MCC members.

No point. A beautiful statement that is so very true. Nice to hear back from you!!
Hey WH.. I'm sure it's been asked of you before at Sly's Ranters board... how fast did you run after you gave the big fella a mouthful? :)
The North fans (both on the North board and in general), seem to be quietly confident about their chances this Sunday. Guess, we'll have to put our foot on the gas, and show them who's boss... again.

On the replay, he didn't run really, he walked off, pretty funny. Would have been funnier if Micky reacted.
Seriously, good on WH for getting a dig in... anyone else would have done the same on an opposition full back. Funny stuff, but unfortunately for Mick, it was on one of our blokes.
If media scrutiny was a lot lower, and Martyn had a "right of reply", it would have been very interesting. A certain someone would have beaten Carl Lewis to the fence, methinks.
Forgive me. I must digress..............
My favorite event at Windy Hill happened when I was a youngster.
I recall peering over the boundary fence of the Essendon Cricket Club enclosure (Showers stand).
It was the '70's man...............
Ron Andrews was in his prime.
South Melbourne was South Melbourne.
I was an impartial observer at this game (had no alligience to either side)
One field umpire in those days.No trial by video.
So it happened , Rotten Ronnie and a bloke by the name of Gull , came charging directly in my direction , Ronnie belting Gull in the guts with every step towards the boundary. Closer , closer , blind side of the umpire.Whack , whack went Andrews.
Out of bounds , the ball landed in my lap.
THEN.
CRUNCH. (that was the sound)
I peered over the fence.
There was Ronny , convulsing , eye-balls rolled back TKO.
One good punch did the deed.
Gull got 4 weeks.
Pity.

What Micky would have done to me is not worth thinking about.I like the fella, but we just happened to cross paths,so I let him have it,he had given Lloydy a bit of a touch up in the physical stakes in previous games,so a fuelled up windyhill spoke his mind.
