Hi Footy Fans...

Two teams are now looking down the barrel of a gun: Port Adelaide and West Adelaide. One club looking to steal fifth spot, the other facing an uphill battle going into the next and final minor round for Season 2004. Only one will dodge the bullet for one more week. The Tigers have avoided collecting the wooden spoon, another upset win for them helped this along resulting in Norwood collecting their first wooden spoon for almost 40 years. The Blues moved back into third spot but that may not last for long... their minor season virtually completed because of their bye next week and the Roosters next match at home will probably see them back into the double-chance position.

So now to this week's edition of the SANFL wrap-up for Round 22.

Old Grand Final rivals clashed at Glenelg Oval on the weekend, the Tigers playing host to the Roosters. In a match that was neck and neck all day, Glenelg showed true grit even though being down at quarter time by one goal. The home side didn't let up on the pressure, taking the slimmest of leads at half time. Daniel Hargraves didn't do much in front of goal and that didn't help the Roosters much, so McEntee became their spearhead for the day. The third quarter saw the two sides go score for score, both kicking 6.3 each. But the final quarter belonged to Glenelg, giving their home crowd a last home match hurrah with a seven goal term. Glenelg ran out winners by 24 points, Steven Salopek doing the most damage with his six big ones.

At Norwood Oval, the Eagles came to basically get some pre-finals fitness in their match against the Redlegs. They got exactly that, the home team taking it up to the visitors with an near even first half when the 'Legs led by nine points. But the Eagles didn't stay down for long, opening up a can of whoop-ass in the third term booting 6.6 to Norwood's 1.2. Not much happened in the final quarter, inaccuracy saving the Redlegs from total humiliation. The Eagles victorious by 43 points.

The ABC Match of the Day took viewers to Alberton Oval for Part 1 of the battle for fifth spot, the Magpies facing the Bloods. A lot at stake that afternoon, an elimination final berth beckoning for Port if Westies slipped up two weeks on the trot. The Pies came ready, determined to take part in Finals Footy for the first time in three seasons. West were the most disappointing in front of goal kicking 2.10 for the first half but the home side didn't do much better with their 3.8. The second half brought more rewards for Port, kicking 7.2 in the third term while the Bloods fell behind drastically only managing 2.1. More inaccuracy by West in the final stanza cost them the game, Port adding 4.4 to win by 31 points.

In the final match at Noarlunga Oval, a bruised, battered and very angry Blues outfit came to face the Panthers. From the first bounce the visitors established a stranglehold on the match to lead by 16 points at quarter time, which was helped along by several Panthers players being caught out by umpires in Sturt's 50 metre zone. The punishment continued in the next term, the Blues booting 7.7 to 2.1. South had better luck in the third quarter but it didn't bring make the gap any smaller, the home side scoring 7.3 to 5.2. It finished up as probably the highest scoring match for the minor round, Sturt finishing the job with nine goals in the final quarter to win by 70 points.

Next week is Round 23, the last round of the minor season. Port and West face the top two teams in the Eagles and Centrals. Port must get past the Eagles if they want to go to Adelaide Oval in two weeks, but can the Bloods halt the raging machine of the Doggies on home soil? North Adelaide can take advantage of the Blues week off and snatch back third spot if they can beat the Panthers. And its a case of see you next year for the Tigers and Norwood, will Glenelg spank the Redlegs with the spoon?

Saturday September 4
Woodville-West Torrens v. Port Adelaide; Woodville Oval
North Adelaide v. South Adelaide; Prospect Oval
Norwood v. Glenelg; Adelaide Oval
West Adelaide v. Central District; Broadspectrum Oval, Richmond

Sturt has the bye.

At least one match will be played on Saturday for the ABC, the other matches may be moved because of AFL finals involving Port Power.

Also next week... Bulldog Daniel Schell looks likely to collect the Ken Farmer Medal unless North spearhead Danny Hargraves pulls off a big effort against South. That to be decided next weekend.

Until then... see you at the Footy!
