I have had an idea of creating an online footy song database.

It would be a website which was divided up into states or leagues and provide the words to the songs of many of the football clubs around Australia.

This is where I need your help. If you could, could you post the words to the songs of the local club you support or play for. I will then start to compile the database and soon i will put the website up.

Your help would be appriciated. ;)

Great idea. There'd be a lot of duplication between clubs in different leagues, but that's footy.

My favourite local footy club (North Shore, Sydney AFL) has the very familiar song of:
See the Bombers fly up up
To win the premiership flag
North Shore boys play this grand old game
Always striving for glory and fame
See the Bombers fly up up
The other teams they don't fear
They all try their best
But they can't get near
As the Bombers fly up

What I'd also appreciate is as much info as possible on -

* When recorded
* Who "wrote" the lyrics
* Who performed it
* How published (eg was it avail on tape, cd, vinyl)??

This is the Kangarilla Football Club song from the Southern Football League in SA. It's sung to the tune of Click Go the Shears. I don't know off hand who wrote the words, but I will ask around.

We are the Kangys, the mighty Double Blues
We are the team to beat 'em through and through
We'll play them on their oval, we'll play them anywhere
So long as they play football we'll beat 'em fair and square

So up go the Kangys, UP, UP, UP
Right up to the very, very top
We'll win a lot of games, we may lose one or two
But we'll stick around and have a beer with you

Weston Creek Lions: ACTAFL

Tune: Road to Gundagai

There's a team proud and true
and they were maroon and blue
and they call us Weston Creek
and the goals that we are kicking
the teams that we are licking
are quite a sight to see
for our teamwork is so good
we're the toast of the town
and our spirit can't be beaten
there's none greater around
Weston Creek, Weston Creek
we will win and win each week
we are a team of champions

I've sent a few from my local league that I know of. You'll find a few on the club sites for SANFL and WAFL clubs as well if that helps.

An excellent idea.

You could post various different versions of teams songs, as well. I always get a bit sad when hearinbg the old Fitzroy song, and the different versions of the Bulldogs, Kangaroos, Bears and Eagles would be interesting reading.

I can provide the original St Kilda FC theme song from early last century, as well as a longer version of "When the Saints go Marching In" they used to play at Moorabbin.

Here they are -

Original St Kilda FC Theme Song
(to the tune of "(I do like to be) beside the seaside"
"Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside,
Oh I do like to be beside the sea.
And down at the Junction is the football ground,
And that's where the Saints all hang around.
So lets give three cheers for old St Kilda,
For this year the Premiers they may be.
Though it's not yet in the bag,
We've got hopes of winning the flag,
Beside the seaside, beside the sea.
Though it's not yet in the bag,
We've got hopes of winning the flag,
Beside the seaside, beside the sea."

"Moorabbin" version of St Kilda FC theme song
"We're the SAints, we're proud and we've got alot of fight.
We're on the move and they'll feel our might.
WE hit 'em nice and hard, make 'em drop their guard.
And we're loyal to our mates cos we're the Saints.

We're Saints, we're good and we've got alot of clout
And we're fighting back, there is no doubt.
We chase 'em when they're hot and we hit 'em when they're not
And we're loyal to our mates cos we're the Saints.

Chorus:
Oh when the Saints go marching in
Oh when the Saints go marching in
I want to be there at Moorabbin
When the Saints go marching in.

We're Saints we're mean and we're all mighty lkeen.
We're after wins like you've never seen.
Let's get 'em on the run, we're not out here for fun
And we're loyal to our mates cos we're the Saints.

(repeat chorus)

Then there is the infamous "extra verse" which has been much derided by Saints fans. We heard "oh when the Saints", then the verse, then "oh when the Saints" again. This is how it went -

"And here we go,
Towards the goals,
With courage skill and pace.
And when the shoutings over,
We'll be number one in the Premiership race"

Hope that helps you. Great idea, and good site as well, by the way.

AFL Southern Tasmanian Premier League Club Songs

Brighton Football Club (Colours: Red & Blue)
It's a grand old flag,
It's a high flying flag.
It's the emblem for you and for me,
It's the emblem of the team we love,
The team of the Red and the Blue.
Every heart beats true for the Red and the Blue,
And we sing this song for you.
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
Keep your eye on the Red and the Blue.

Clarence Football Club (Colours: Red & White)
Clarence are the team to beat, I sing to you.
With the will to win and the strength to carry through.

Up the Roos and play your greatest.
We'll kick all the goals the straightest.
Opponents, we will bowl you over.
We're the mighty Kangaroos.

Loyals come to see the pennant flying high,
We've got a spirit our opponents can't deny,
Clarence always take the mark, very high and wide.
C'mon the Red and White.

Up the Roos and play your greatest.
We'll kick all the goals the straightest.
Opponents, we will bowl you over.
We're the mighty Kangaroos.

Glenorchy District Football Club (Colours: Black & White)
We're Glenorchy Boys, the Magpies,
A team of always do or die.
Of victory, we must always be assured,
To win for the ball our big men fly.
We've the spirit to fight on with,
Until the final bell rings out.
We play the game with dash and courage,
Fair and law abiding.
We are the good old Black and White.

We're Glenorchy Boys, the Magpies,
The premiership is our main aim.
To top the ladder and to win the flag,
So as to keep our District's fame.
When the final game is over,
That's the time to celebrate.
Magpies always flock together,
We are a happy mob forever.
We are the good old Black and White.

Hobart Football Club (Colours: Gold & Black)
Hobart forever boys,
Hobart are we.
Home of a great tradition,
Where the premiership's our mission.
Hobart forever boys,
Answer the call,
Eat 'em alive you Tigers.
Hobart is the greatest team of all.

We'll beat the Magpies wether it be wet or fine,
We'll beat the Magpies and at the bell they'll be behind.
No doubt about the reason for it.

Hobart forever boys,

Where the premiership's our mission.
Hobart forever boys,
Answer the call,
Eat 'em alive you Tigers.
Hobart is the greatest team of all.

Kingborough Football Club (Colours: Black & Gold)
Oh we're from Tigerland.

We'll fight and fight and win.
Oh we're from Tigerland,
We never weaken till the final siren's gone.
Like the Tigers of old, we're strong and we're bold,
For we're from Tiger (Yellow and Black)
We're from Tigerland.
Go Kingborough.

Lauderdale Football Club (Colours:Red & Black)

New Norfolk District Football Club (Colours: Red, White & Black)
There's a team on the track,
Dressed in Red, White and Black,
We are the mighty Eagle team.
It takes a good team to stop us.
A better one to wop us,
And Hobart knows that's true.
If the Magpies ever head us,
We'll all come fighting back.
For we're fighting for our colours,
The old Red, White and Black.
Down the 'Roos and the 'Gulls,
And we'll bust the 'Robins skulls.
We are the mighty Eagle team.

North Hobart Football Club (Colours: Red & Blue Stripes)
It's a grand old flag,
It's a high flying flag,
It's the emblem for you and for me.
It's the emblem of the team we love.
The team of the Red and the Blue.
Every heart beats true for the Red and the Blue,
As we sing this song for you.
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
Keep your eye on the Red and the Blue

*Notes:
Clarence's original song featured the words "Maroon and White" - They changed to Red & White in 1978.

North Hobart and Brighton have the same club song - however North Hobart are known as the Demons, Brighton are known as the Robins.

Hobart are not officially known as the Tigers (and haven't been officially since 1997) as Kingston claimed the nickname in the league. However, Hobart still sing it in thier clubsong in protest at other clubs who were also barred from doing the same thing at the time - and who got away with doing it.

Sandy Bay and later Southern Districts Cats songs are not on this list for the fact that they no longer exist as clubs.
The Seagulls folded in 1997, and the Cats folded after just one and a half seasons in 1999.

Here's another one from my old team:

Reynella Football Club SFL (SA)

We are Reynella, we are the team
We can't be beaten that's easily seen
At the end of the season, you'll know the reason
We are the premier team

We're a mighty bunch of fellows
And everyone's a star
And if we're not at football you'll find us at the bar
So come along and join us, you'll find that we're alright
And you can be a member of the mighty black and white.

Here's the full/old WCE lyrics

For years they took the best of us
And claimed them for their own
But now we've got them back again
Our Eagles have come home.

[Chorus]
We're the Eagles - West Coast Eagles
And we're here to show you why
We're the big birds, Kings of the big game
We're the Eagles, we're fling high.

For years we learned the lessons
And we learned them very well
Now we've added West Coast magic
And we'll give you merry hell.

[Chorus]

So watch out all you know-alls
All you wise men from the East
You'll get more than just a footy game
You'll get a West Coast Eagles feast.

[Chorus]

1st Verse
If you are a Queenslander then sing along with me
We are the Bears on the road to victory
All for one and one for all
We'll answer to the call
We're the greatest team of all

2nd Verse
We're the fearless Brisbane Bears
From the mighty northern state
Our pride and guts and character are gonna make us great
Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth will know their fate
When the Bears run out and roar

Chorus
Brisbane Bears will live forever
We will always stick together
The Gabba is the place where people always come to see
The greatest team of all

3rd Verse
The whistle blows the ball is bounced
The crowd all give a yell
And we will do our very best until the final bell
And when the game is over
We'll be closer to the flag
We're the greatest team of all

Chorus
Brisbane Bears will live forever
We will always stick together
The Gabba is the place where people always come to see
The greatest team of all.

I'm also sure the Eagles had another song in-between the new & old versions of "We're the Eagles".

I vaguely recall them pinching a local footy song "I'd Rather Be at the Football" that was used to promote footy in WA and turning it into "I'd Rather Be at the Eagles".

It was extremely boring and its no surprise it didn't last long. If anyone has a copy ....

Fitzroy FC (Vic) :
We are the boys from old Fitzroy,
We wear the colours, maroon and blue.
We will always fight for victory,
And we will always see it through.
Win or lose, we do or die,
In defeat, we always try.
Fitzroy, Fitzroy,
The club we hold so dear.
Premiers, we'll be this year.

Fitzroy Reds FC (Vic) :
We are the boys from old Fitzroy,
We wear the colours, maroon and blue.
We will always fight for victory,
And we will always see it through.
Win or lose, we do or die,
In defeat, we always try.
Fitzroy Redders,
The club we hold so dear.
Premiers, we'll be this year.

Eaglehawk FC (Vic) :
We are the Blues
The only real Two-Blues
For we can win a game
And we can lose
And our aim is to do, and not to talk
For we come from the old Eaglehawk
And when the game is on, we do our best
We battle through and
Get it off our chest
If you don't want a ride, you can walk
Where to ... Eaglehawk, Eaglehawk, Eaglehawk.

Benalla All Blacks Football Club - Central Goulburn Football League

Oh we're from Panther Land.
A fighting fury, we're from Panther Land.
In any weather you will see us with a grin,
Risking head and shin.
If we're behind then never mind,
We'll fight and fight and win.
Oh we're from Panther Land,
We never weaken till the final siren's gone.
Like the Panther of old, we're strong and we're bold,
For we're from Panther Land!

The All Blacks song was originally the same song but with the word "******" through the song. To be politicaly correct the club had to change to song to Panther Land.

Having known of the All Blacks' contentious original nickname, I must say, its inappropriateness is a bit more obvious when applied to the team's theme song! :)

Yes it did, and Hobart had to sing "We are the Mighty Hobart, Hobart is the greatest team of all" Sounded GAY. Because the SFL would have taken our points off us for singing Tigers.

The Southern Districts Cats song was the Adelaide Crows song.

Southern Districts Cats Clubsong
We're the pride of Southern Districts,
We're the mighty Southern Cats.
We're courageous, stronger, faster.
And respected by our foes.
Admiration of Tasmania,
We're respected by our foes.
We're the pride of Southern Districts,
We're the mighty Southern Cats.

Southern Districts Cats played in the TFL Statewide League in 1998, and folded midway through the 1999 season. They were a "supposed new club" brought in after Sandy Bay had folded, and Hobart had left to join the SFL, and Launceston and South Launceston had left to rejoin the NTFL.
Southern Cats were only Sandy Bay with a new strip, new name and nickname. They played thier home games mostly at North Hobart, with a couple at Huonville.
It was virtually the same player list, board members and supporters anyway.
The only reason Sandy Bay had "folded" was because they were bankrupt, and couldn't trade as the Sandy Bay Football Club any longer.

Some more Club Songs from Tasmania.

Sandy Bay Football Club - Blue & White (TFL 1945-1997)

Seagulls, Seagulls flying high,
May the spirit never die.

Cygnet Football Club - AFLST Regional League (Black, White & Teal)

I can't believe how many teams use the same tune to their song, here's Burnie's old Hawks song, well I think it's these words,.

Burnie Football Club AFL Northern Tasmania (Brown and Gold
We're a happy team at Burnie
We're the Mighty Fighting Hawks.
We love our Club, and we play to win,
Riding the bumps with a grin (at Burnie).
Come what may, you'll find us striving
Team work is the thing that talks,
One for all and all for one
Is the way we play at Burnie
We are the Mighty Fighting Hawks.

Their new song, I think follows the same lines...so it would be

Burnie Football Club AFL Northern Tasmania (Same as Freo)

We're a happy team at Burnie
We're the Mighty Fighting Dockers.
We love our Club, and we play to win,
Riding the bumps with a grin (at Burnie).
Come what may, you'll find us striving
Team work is the thing that talks,
One for all and all for one
Is the way we play at Burnie
We are the Mighty Fighting Dockers

I remember hearing it at the end of an old TFL game, I don't know if they still have this one or not.
