View Full Version : The player that nobody mentions

The player? Mark Alvey. He rarely rates a discussion.

This is a player in his fourth season - our first draft pick in '98. Where is he in terms of his career? He's only played a sprinkling of games in the ones. Is Terry giving him a go? I thought that he played well against Melbourne earlier in the year, but does tend to go missing at various times. I'm not really up to speed with his VFL form.. He's looked pretty good on the odd occasion. What does everyone think? Is he a prospect?

My own opinion is that, if he hasn't been able to cement a senior position at this stage, he is in serious danger come season's end. We've already seen Guido and Gilbee string a few games together - arguably similar types, who are both from the class of 2000. This doesn't look good for Mark. Do we stick him in the seniors though and say, 'look, you've got until the end of the year to show us some form and justify our faith in you. You won't get dropped. Just show us what you can do.' Or has he not really shown enough to warrant that luxury?

Good question. Mark shares a house with a friend of mine and I know that he had a really good pre-season and was looking forward to a good season this year.
The injury he got in a pracky match on the eve of the season held him back for a while and then getting dropped affected him. He was an emergency for the seniors last week and trained(impressively) with the senior squad.
My opinion is that he has more to offer and should be in the side before blokes like Romero.

His career could still go either way. May be delisted because someone has to be. It may depend on the opinions the coaching staff have of other guys on the list as much as what they think of Mark. He does have a way to go before he gets to be a regular senior player, but he may get there. He could also be valuable in the same way contessa is, putting pressure on guys in the side to perform and giving Plough the ability to drop them when they are struggling.

Local, Romero has played over 200 games. He deserves his spot because you know he has it in him to be a very good footballer, Alvey has only shown that ability in patches.

I'm with Local on this one. It's time to play him and see. And a quarter here and there isn't playing him - give him good ground time in at least 4 games. I'm not sure what his future is at the end of the year, but he is one I would not like to see go without being given a proper crack at it.

Chris Tarrant is a friend of yours?

Looks like Jose has a fairly serious knee injury so will Mark get his chance? Dimma is waiting in the wings too.

I also think he should be given a good chance. I didn't intend to sound as negative as i may have in my previous post. I think he could go either way but there is definitely every chance he can become a regular senior player.

Jose spot may also be taken by Contessa who played well today.

Mark doesn't live with Chris Tarrant as far as I know. He lived with Nathan Brown until last year then moved in with my friend at the beginning of the year.
Havent seen my friend for a little while so maybe his domestic arrangements have changed.
