View Full Version : The O.C and The Panel to be cancelled?

I dont know if anyone read the article on page 7 of the guide on Wednesday but pretty much it highlighted how badly these two programs are rating for ten. It goes on to say how they both have such a large cult following in there particular niche for example with the O.C having a huge following with younger viewers but hardly anyone in the older viewers. The O.C is getting beaten by The Bill, CSI and All Saints. The Panel last week was 500,000 viewers behind Without A Trace and 400,000 behind Forensic Investigators.
I think the O.C will become a summer show and we could be saying goodbye to the Panel soon. Hopefully they go back to the ABC and do Sketch Comedy again.

Two of my favourite shows but I can see the OC getting moved to 9:30pm on a Monday. They have a loyal following only sadly.
The Panel won't go. They have only been back a few weeks.

good riddance to both of them.
Exactly, hopefully both will tumble into obscurity and in a few years time they are but a distant memory where no-one is quite sure if they actually existed or not.

I love The Panel, but I'm hooked on Forensic Investigators.
That was just some battlers opinion in the guide, just because he doesnt understand the OC and has gotten off the Panel doesnt mean they will be taken off. I cant see either of them going just yet.

Interesting - I used to love the Panel - now I can take it or leave it...which seems to have coincided with Rob Stich going from being funny... to just predictably opinionated.....and the more regular appearances of Kate Langbrook.
Rob has taken being anti war and anti American to a naustisatingly boring and repetative level..............Move on Rob - we know !!! - it aint cool anymore

I cant see either of them going just yet.Surely the panel must be on its last legs. Was good for the first few seasons but like any show, it gets boring and repetitive. They've done well to last this long, but they're way past their used by date.
As for the OC, never watched as I'm not interested in teenage dramas based around beautiful people. But as 90210 and Melrose were big hits I suspect this one will be too. I'm tipping they've got the wrong timeslot at the moment.
Was it just me or did anyone else think Jeff Stillson looked as though he wanted to throttle Kate Langbroek last night ?
She kept interupting everything the poor bloke said.

Not sure how the O.C. could be doing badly, as everybody I know seems to watch this vile trash...
Anyway, if they axe it, I'm all for it. I'll be praying.
The panel just need to realise kate langbroek needs to go. There were about ten more "ooh" "oh really's" last night.

same here. I can't believe it would. However, it is up against CSI. Anything against CSI would get slaughtered.
I say place it in a different timeslot, maybe take off Rove Live? Footy show is finishing soon, but it Thursday night after Idol.
the panel - keep it
the O.C. - Mischa Barton is a star now, so they could chop it and it won't matter, she'll be around.
The OC is just about the only show I try to watch every week ... bugger.

Never watched an episode of the OC as it really doesnt seem to do much for me.
Love the Panel, but at the moment I am watching FI however I think this show will die in the arse eventually because there couldnt be that much material to work with so I think it might be just a one season wonder.
So if this is the case I hope they stick with the Panel but they have got to get rid of Kate, she annoys they hell out of me, always has, and she is as think as a brick and not funny. I dont even know why she has lasted so long, its not like she is good to look at either.

Damn - I don't even know why, but I love the OC. Maybe it's a throwback to my teen years and Beverly Hills 90210.
All the characters and stories are interchangeable. It's great!
As for The Panel - get back to the ABC and do something cutting you smarmy ********ers!
The OC has become prescribed viewing for every VCE student. Some sort of "here's what life will be like if I study really hard" kind of motivation. Also, having absolute hotties like Mischa Barton doesn't hurt. Don't see it being canned, but maybe moved (weekend timeslot?). Problem with The Panel - Have only one 'star' (Glenn Robbins) - who probably contributed the least material (in terms of quantity) in the last show.
I cannot stand the O.C, i don't know what the type is about. All my footy mates love it but i think it's a peice of crap.

Some sort of "here's what life will be like if I study really hard" kind of motivation. It's actually la-la crap for la-la people. Shows such as this, Melrose Place, 90210, and movies like Pretty Woman and film clips by Robbie Williams attract the same sort of people for the same reasons: People are attracted to glamour. People don't have glamour in their real life so watch such TV shows as a substitute. Usually it's the closest to a glamourous/upper class lifestyle they will ever get. Time for some people to wake up.

The panel is still a great show - just been going for too long. I can't believe that the guys themselves are not bored of doing it by now. Would like to see them do something different because everything they have done to date has been great TV - Even the Fly Fishing Series!!! :)
The OC - I must admit to never having seen it - even the promos are enough to make me feel queasey. What was that about something to aspire to if yo uwork hard. You mean something to make you wish mummy and daddy were rich so you didn't have to study.

Absolutely, as long as Mischa is still around, i don't mind ;)
She really did struggle to find a role for herself after The Sixth Sense.

I dont watch the OC but I watch the Panel every week. it isn't as gritty as it used to be. Kate annoys me like I cannot describe and Santo is turning into a babbling Italian. I like when they have Jeff Stilson on, he is fantastic and so refreshing. I also liked the few times they had Magda Szubanski on in Kate's place. heck, I even prefer Jo Stanley to Kate. I remember when they used to have intelligent conversations and said the things we were all thinking.....

Perhaps if The Panel went back to concentrating on its guests - actually letting them talk rather than interrupting and dribbling sh|t over the top of them - and got rid of the pathetic preloaded humour that they keep attempting (Rob Sitch's botched John Howard/Chris Judd's girlfriend gag was ever so hilarious) they might get the show back on track.
Wouldn't be at all disappointed if the course vet pulled the screens.

Rob & Glenns video gags have fallen flat this year. They're starting to make Rove Letterman look credible.

The Panel seem to have forgotten what made them popular. Just some regular people having a chat about topical issues or to topical people, with some funny and insightful comments. Much of it felt fresh and spontaneous, as well as fairly neutral and objective.
Now, however, they try to be too funny with too many of their stupid pre-arranged video gags, and their political opinions, and Langbroek's absurd and constant interjections.
It used to be a 'can't miss' but now it's a 'can't watch!'

I pity the people who watch The OC, which seems like a whole lot of people, too. I can act better than Mischa Barton and that's saying something. And the storylines on Passions are more realistic than this crap.

Not like you've watched that much of it. right?
It is easy to dismiss The OC as just another 90210 clone, but I think there is a bit more to it than that. Yes, some of the acting is ordinary, Mischa Barton in particular. However, the writing is sharper, and it doesn't take itself too seriously. There is a good balance between storylines involving adult characters and the teenage characters. It's not Emmy Award winning tv, but it is a welcome change from all the crime shows and reality tv shows currently on the box.
As for The Panel, the technical problems they had last week were terrible. The year started off okay, but with another crime show in Forensic Investigators up against it, it has really struggled in the ratings. Maybe a genuine revamp, less panellists and maybe some new faces are needed. I've liked Dave O'Neil and Tony Martin when they have been a guest panellists.
give mick molloy his tv show back. and put it on the ABC!

Yeah, I'd go along with that.
My mates and I started watching for the female talent of course (sure, fantasising about what we can never have), but the O.C. actually is very funny. Not in a 'brilliant British comedy' kinda way, but more in a pathetic and sad, yet very dry and subtle manner. Seth, Sandy and (just lately) the guy with the gay dad all bring much humour to the show. It's still reasonably new so maybe that will wear off in time. But I can't say any of the other shows the O.C. has been compared to have ever made me laugh or have been as enjoyable to watch.
If you take the O.C. for what it is and don't expect too much, you'll find it is a bit different and not too bad, IM(teenybopper)O anyway. So, what I'm saying is, I hope Channel 10 keep screening it, at least until its initial luster wears off and the 'quality' wanes
Just hurry up and cancel the two shows, they both suck monkeys nuts.

I saw the extended preview for the OC's 2nd season (about to start in the US) last night. It looks a lot better than this season, mainly because it's not the typical 'everyone lives happily ever after' storyline. In the first season, the plot to most episodes is: disaster at start, kiss & make up at the end. But next year does not look like that all. They don't live the glamour lives they live this season!
I hope it lasts in Aus so we can see the 2nd season!
Please get rid of Kate Langbroek NOOOOOOOW !!!!!!!!!!!!
She's just announced she's got another bun in the oven.Surely she'll milk this one as much as she milked the last one.Perhaps we'll have a live crappy nappy changing session this time.
I wonder if it's name will be Langbroek Langbroek. The other poor kid is named after the dad - Lewis Lewis [ how cruel ].

FYI, in total I've seen about 15 mins of The OC when I've been walking through the room or on the puter when my sisters are watching it and believe me, it doesn't even take that long to work out that Mischa Barton can't act and that it is very unrealistic.
I don't care if it doesn't take itself seriously, that doesn't warrant me wasting an hour a week of my life watching it. It is still crap and unenjoyable.
Just on The Panel: it is definitely past it's use-by date mostly because of Santo, who is going slowly mad and the ever annoying Kate Langbroek.

If you read my reply, you would actually find that I actually agree with you that Mischa Barton can't act.
I actually agree with you that the OC isn't realistic. How many people live in mansions they do? And you would hardly say that the OC, at least to this point, has a wide range of ethnicities represented.
But what dramas are? Neighbours and Home & Away hardly are, and Goren's a bit of a smarty pants as far as I'm concerned.
The OC has a good mix of some better than average writing, good comedic moments as well as the silly elements of soap which make it work. Am I learning anything by watching the OC? Of course not. It is the kind of show which I enjoy to relax after a day at uni, that's all it is.
Fair enough if you think it is crap and unenjoyable though - with shows like The OC or any soap/drama for that matter, it is easy to see why people may put it in the 'seen one, seem them all' basket. There is a lot more crap teen drama out there, than good teen drama.

I still love The Panel. It's still better than most things on TV.
As of the OC, it looks interesting, but I'm put off actually watching it by the constant comparisons to 90210, Dawson's Creek, etc...
