Great news. Should have been in the squad before Clarke IMO.

Hope he gets an opportunity now...

The media are giving the impression that Bunk will be Pontings direct replacement at number 3.

About bloody time. Hopefully he doesn't stuff this up as he is unlikely to get another chance if he does. His County form has been nothing short of exceptional, he will probably go into the side as our most in form batsmen!!

Please Please Please play Watson at no3. Would love to see the Aussies get done by an innings with 2 first ball ducks from no3. Maybe then people can realise how ******** he is

In all seriousness, Hodgey had better get a game. Can someone find the fixture and find out if and who the Vics are playing in the 2 weeks he will be gone? NSW maybe? The only reason I could see them taking them unless they have finally got some brains and realised after about 5 seasons of enormous runs he is a better player than the NSW team combined.

If Watson is the future then the Bangladeshis can plan on winning a few games in the future and climbing above the Aussies in world rankings

I have my doubts over Hodge at the top level, a couple of times he's been given a chance in OZ 2 and has looked a bit iffy

We all (Victorians and most Aussies) hope Hodgey does well if given the chance

You know the funniest thing about this 1st test is it the beginning of the showcase series of test cricket yet the 2 best batsmen in the world have pulled out.

That is a whole seperate debate, but, on present form, I think you would find Tendulkar would struggle to make it into a current World XI, let alone be classed 1 of the top 2 in the world. Historically, him and Brian Lara may be the top 2 players still playing, but not currently.

Mate, do you even follow cricket? If you did then you would be ashamed of that comment. Do yourself a favour and check out his PC record last season... 4 tons, 3 50s at well over 50.

I saw him play a few of times last season and he was mighty impressive. Much more potential than Clarke IMO.

Aren't Hayden and Dravid the best batmen in world cricket? :) You may be surprised to learn that Dravid has pulled ahead of Sachin in career averages, though Sachin has played more games and has a much higher aggregate. Sachin also has a fantastic conversion rate of 50s to 100s.

Player Mat Runs HS BatAv 100 50 W BB BowlAv 5w Ct St
Sachin 114 9470 241* 57.39 33 37 35 3/10 44.54 0 72 0
Dravid 78 6855 270 58.09 17 32 1 1/18 39.00 0 98 0

One very interesting stat is that Sachin's career averages are boosted by games played with home ground advantage while Dravids best performances are away from India:

In India:
Sachin 47 4265 217 61.81 15 15 14 3/10 48.07 0 35 0
Dravid 33 2662 222 51.19 6 13 0 - - 0 46 0
away
Sachin 67 5205 241* 54.21 18 22 21 2/7 42.19 0 37 0
Dravid 45 4193 270 63.53 11 19 1 1/18 24.00 0 52 0

With an away average of 63.53 I'd be taking Dravid first for any away series.

My thoughts exactly, I am not sure how closely this fella actually follows cricket. Ponting would not even be in a best XI, let alone the best in the world.

LOL.
yeah people have such short memories. Wasn't it last summer that he scored double centuries vs the Indians in back to back it tests??

A quick statsguru filter tells me he's averaged no less than 79 in his past 15 tests - he'd make my world XI.

But yeah i'd take Dravid over Sachin currently, even if he was fit.

Well I should have said 2 of the best in the world but I was tired and not thinking.

Ponting would be on par with Hayden for the Aussies best batsman

Ponting would definitely be in my World XI - but the stats do show that he is in something of a slump at the moment compared to when he was batting at his best..

Last 10 scores
Tests: 45, 22, 20, 92, 27, 10, 28, 21, 47, 25. [33.70]
ODIs: 29, 14, 8*, 4, 25, 26, 10, 91, 67, 63. [37.44]

The 91, 67 and 63 at the end of the ODIs were the end of a hot run of fifties, and nothing particular of note since - but for pure class and ability, he would be one of the first few picked in my XI regardless of form at this stage.
