Great team player and a triple premiership player. They are a rare breed. Good luck in the future.

If my last memory of Shaun Hart is getting carried off after that sickening blow, then that pretty much sums up his career. Never took a backward step, and always showed tremendous courage.

The guy is also an absolute champion off the field, working with kids on the Gold Coast.

Thanks Shaun and good luck.

Brisbane Lions midfielder Shaun Hart has announced his retirement.

The 2001 Norm Smith medallist missed this year's AFL grand final after suffering broken cheekbones in Brisbane's preliminary final win over Geelong.

Hart played 273 AFL matches for the Brisbane Bears and Brisbane Lions.

He is the third Lion to announce his retirement following the departure of forwards Alastair Lynch and Craig McRae.

Doubts remain over the futures of veterans Darryl White and Martin Pike.

The epitome of a team player, the epitome of a making the most of what you have. He should be an inspiration to anyone starting their career. The little engine that could. Whilst never blessed with silky skills, a big vertical leap, of enough inches, he became a run all day player, a defending midfielder that every team needs. In todays AFL it is not the top 5 in your team that make the difference, with the salary cap and trading everyone can have a few stars, but the next 12 or so players that make up the team. Consistent, reliable and a role model, I choose not to remember how he went out but for the tenacity, dedication and selfless way he played the game. Thank you mr. hart for the good times and helping us fight out of the darkness of the 'difficult years'.

Totally agree with all of the above. If any of you were there at the post GF dinner on Saturday night you will never forget the look on Michael Voss's face as he paid tribute to him.

Hart was listed at 60-1 with sports betting agencies to achieve the Norm Smith medal pre-game, but revelled in the contest, defying personal safety to throw himself at the ball whenever an opportunity arose.

He finished with 23 possessions - an equal game-high with skipper Michael Voss - and proved a popular, and deserved, winner.

“I couldn’t believe it. Someone told me out on the ground before the presentation to have a quick think about making a speech because I’d won the medal,” Hart said.

“I thought they were actually playing a nasty joke on me.”

When my two daughters were quite young they briefly chatted to Shaun Hart during Brisbane Lions family event at Luna Park in Melbourne. I was really impressed by him. He was gentle, sincere and showed a real interest in the girls.

A top footballer and a top bloke!

 Cut it out Mr. Ripper!

The girls were 7 and 5 and he asked them where they went to school, what there favourite subjects were, complimented them on the ribbons (club colors) they were wearing in their hair and the like.

;) Remember, we are talking Shaun Hart here!

Met him on holidays up here in the Whitsundays a few years ago. Had a few beers & a yarn. Told me about his first couple of years on the Gold Coast - just a few young guys in a house with a cleaner twice a week, & bugger all support. Different world now.

Absolute champion man. The Suns will be so much better for his involvement.
