Western Bulldogs v. Richmond
Friday, 27 July 2001 - Colonial Stadium 7:40 PM
At this stage of the season, games involving two top eight sides
are incredibly important. They are 8 point games.
If Richmond win, they consolidate their position in the top half
of the bottom half of the eight and still maintain hopes of a top
4 finish whilst sinking the Bulldogs hopes.
If the Dogs win, they will join the Tigers on 10 wins and further
clog up the bottom end of the 8.
12 wins could be the minimum needed to make the 8 but both sides
will be looking to make the top 4 and thus this game is of vital
importance.
If that wasn't enough, there is the bad blood which developed
between the sides earlier in the year in the Round 2 clash.
Funnily enough, after being smashed by the Dogs, Richmond went on
to win their next 3 games whilst the Dogs didnt do much.
The Tigers are unchanged from the team which steamrolled
Melbourne with the Dogs bringing in Dimmatina, Curley and
debutant Bowden for Gilbee, Dooley and Romero.
The Tigers have continuall been tested all year and have passed
some and failed others. This is another test. I think that the
Dogs hardness will see them prevail.
Tip: Dogs by 30 points

Geelong v. St Kilda
Saturday, 28 July 2001 - Shell Stadium 2:10 PM
(To the tune of "Cats In The Cradle" by Harry Chapin, or if
you're my age,
Ugly Kid Joe)
Blighty got sacked just the other day
Only won three games, gave the club a spray
Butterss gave him the arse, "that's what we had to do"
But the Saints still lost, so what else is new?
Now Ken Hickley's gone and Jonas left too
But it was sure nice playing for you Mal
It was sure nice playing for you.
Now the Cats at Kardinia is our next big test
We ain't got Banger and Loewe needs a rest
When we gonna win one, I don't know when
But we'll have a big night then
You know we'll all got locked up then.
Now the Cats are going along pretty sweet
They thrashed the Pies and West Coast they beat
Buddha Hocking's back for his last hurrah
And somehow they still give a game to McGrath
They're strong in defence and their midfield's okay
But the forward line's in disarray
Cos David Mensch just can't play
But the Saints at Kardinia shouldn't be too tough
Only play for ten minutes, oughtta be enough
When we beat the Saints we'll have won nine then
And we'll be in September then
You know we'll make the top eight then
St Kilda's backline is full of holes
Geelong should win by at least nine goals
Ben Graham needs mark, Riccardi needs kicks
And the Saints need the loss for priority picks
So the Catters to win without breaking much sweat
And in other games I will select
In other games I will select
The Dogs over Tigers on the Friday night
The Demons to give Adelaide a fright
Magpies and Lions and Hawks and Dons
And on Sunday I'll tip the Swans
You know I'm gonna tip the Swans

Melbourne v. Adelaide
Saturday, 28 July 2001 - MCG 2:10 PM
The winner of Melbourne vs Adelaide this weekend will depend on
which teams turn up. Both sides have a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde
aspect to them, being able to match it and beat some of th etop
teams, and managing to get belted by cellar dwellars.
The game between them in Round 2 was in interesting affair, with
Melbourne entering the second half with a seemingly unassailable
lead. Much to everyone's surprise, Adlaide pegged their way back
into the contest to actually lead by three points with under a
minute remaining. Only some brilliant boundary line ruckwork by
Melbourne forward David Schwarz saved the Dees, with his clear
tap finding Andrew Leoncelli who finished the work off with the
winning goal.
Both teams take indifferent form into the game with Melbourne's
gutsy win over Carlton being followed by a very timid four
quarter effort against Richmond. Adelaide were disappointing in
losing to Sydney last week after a huge MCG win over St.Kilda, in
the match that ultimately cost Saints' coach Malcolm Blight his
job.
Adelaide's strong defence should be able to nullify the
inconsistent Melbourne forward line, but at the same time
Melbourne's weakness - their lack of quality experienced key
defenders - will not be exploited by Adelaide's dysfunctional
forward line.
In a close, scrappy, low-scoring encounter, the Demons should get
up by about 13 points.
Other selections : Richmond, Essendon, Kangaroos, Sydney,
Collingwood, Carlton, Geelong.

Fremantle v. Collingwood
Saturday, 28 July 2001 - Subiaco 5:40 PM (7:40 PM AEST)
It seems the Dockers curse extends overseas. In a recent
U.S.A.F.L. match THE CINCINNATI DOCKERS Australian Rules Football
Club lost to The Chicago Swans, 2.2.14 to 27.14.176. The good
news is that the Cincinnati version have tasted success five
times more than Fremantle this year.
Back in olde Melbourne town all the big AFL questions are being
asked.
Have Collingwood "hit the wall?"
Are Fremantle really "fat?"
The tough answers remain as naturally the football world awaits
with baited breath. Early betting has Collingwood at 10-1 for
crash test dummy status, with the Fremantle quote firming at 5-2
on the heavy weight tip.
How embarrassing. Surely the accusation that you're just a flabby
guy in a purple knitted vest is going to attract a bit of
bullying around the wharves. No wonder John Worsfold wants to get
his finger in that pie.
I can foresee the cellulite-induced headlines if Freo indeed win
this game. "DOCKERS SHOUT", "DOCKERS HAVE PIES FOR DINNER" or
"HOMERS FLATTEN INTERSTATE ROAD VICTIMS - D'OH!"
And without that major upset occurring, this contest certainly
isn't going to set the planet on fire. Both teams are in poor
form and coming off the back of huge losses. Collingwood must win
comfortably in order to stay on track; Fremantle must remember to
try.
Last time they met, The Magpies beat The Dockers by a meagre 17
points at Colonial as Nathan Buckley gathered a lazy 46
possessions. This time they will need Chris Tarrant to shake the
last few weeks' monkey off his back and regain some goal scoring
prowess, while the return to Perth of Magpie recruits James
Clement and Brodie Holland should be interesting. The Pies will
also be hoping vice captain Scott Burns can make a rare
reappearance from the injury that has severely hamstrung his
season.
Meanwhile The Dockers' hopes lie primarily with their current
form players Matthew Pavlich, Peter Bell, Matthew Carr, Justin
Longmuir and Heath Black. If they can't do it for themselves,
Western Australian or even Jenny Craig, surely they can dedicate
something to their identically nick named, uniformed and
enthusiastic counterparts over there in Cincinnati, USA.

ROAR OF THE LION TO BE NO MORE!
The last seven weeks have been great for those who support the
Brisbane Football Club but all good things come to an end and
this week will see the end of the streak.
I was lucky enough to be in Brisbane last week for their game
against Port Adelaide but in watching the game I saw some
worrying signs for the Lions. They were able to win quite a bit
of the ball out of the centre against a strong Port midfield but
what should have been a convincing win only turned out to be very
mediocre. With only three goals after half time it showed that
there is plenty of work to be done before this team can be picked
with any conviction, they are not the real deal yet.
The Kangaroos would have been kicking themselves this week after
being so close yet so far to league leaders Essendon. They
showed how to lose a game from being 69 points up like no other
team before only to lose by 12 points. The major question
hanging over the Kangaroos this week will be can their legs hold
up? They would have spent a lot of energy creating such a lead
and then trying to defend it last week against Essendon it will
be interesting to see how they cope.
Wayne Carey and Shane Clayton come in for the Kangaroos this week
for the loss of David King and Corey Jones. King misses with a
hand injury and is a savage blow to the Kangaroos who are already
missing another hard nut in Anthony Stevens from their midfield.
However should Carey play as named it will be a huge boost for
the Kangaroos who was back to his best before his latest injury.
Brisbane brings back Chris Scott and Chris Johnson to replace Ben
Robbins omitted and Darryl White who strained a thigh muscle.
Like many games this week this can probably be picked just by the
toss of a coin. Brisbane's record in Melbourne is poor even
though they beat Collingwood a couple of weeks ago. Its really
hard to judge whether that was Brisbane's good form or the fact
that Collingwood are on the way down. I am a little worried if
the Kangaroos can run the game out but I feel that the Kangaroos
need it more and should be more desperate. It's really hard to
imagine the final eight with out the Kangaroos in it so because
of this I will pick the Kangaroos by the narrowest of margins.
Scott's Tips:
Western Bulldogs
Geelong
Melbourne
Collingwood
Kangaroos
Essendon
Hawthorn

Port Adelaide v. Essendon
Sunday, 29 July 2001 - Football Park 1:40 PM (2:10 PM AEST)
''It's an ideal opportunity for us to make a statement because if
we beat Essendon people are going to take notice.'' This week
Port Power faces the toughest team in the league. Just mention
the Bombers and people are asking, "how many goals did they win
by?"
But this week could be different. Port have come out early this
week and said they are happy to be going into the game as
underdogs because it gives them the chance to hunt down the beast
(Essendon). And the home crowd in Adelaide will be out in force
to push their team towards the line.
For the Bombers, they have now won six games on the trot and have
people already guaranteeing them a spot in the grand final and
are nearly handing them the cup. However this is also a battle
for them. The battle is about complacency, and last week "Well,
it was the kick in the bum that was needed". After staging the
biggest comeback EVER, Essendon wont want to put themselves
through that again.
However the Kangaroos may have handed port a huge favor. The
players will take longer to recover from the "blockbuster" match
and the aches no doubt will be hurting longer this week. There
was so much media hype about the game that makes it difficult to
focus on the week ahead rather than sit back and celebrate with
the rest of the bomber supporters.
Port on the other hand, has just taken the worst road trip on the
league, the GABBA, and fell to the might of the Brisbane Lions.
Tredrea says Port only had one bad quarter against Lions which
cost it dearly. They had a very quiet night and will be looking
at moving on. Che Cockatoo-Collins was rated unlikely to recover
from a hamstring injury and Tredrea comments saying, 'We missed
Che ... he's been a great player for us and the more targets
there are on the forward line and guys playing well the harder it
is for opposition sides to stop...
Brisbane have been claiming a number of teams over the past few
rounds and an interesting statistic is that 4 out of the last 5
teams Brisbane have beaten have crashed the next week, with only
Hawthorn wining the next round. Port will really need to be on
their game to stop this trend from continuing.
Late in the Brisbane match last week, Centre half-back Darren
Mead, rolled an ankle, but he is almost certain to play after
making a good recovery. On Tuesday night, Dustin Fletcher (Ess)
was fined $600 for shaking the goal post during the Kangaroos
game. Port regain Kingsley this week while the Bombers have key
defender Sean Wellman available after serving a two-match
suspension.
The match promises to be a really tough contest with Essendon
having to make the road trip. My tip: Well it would be great for
the competition if Port got up, but I think that Essendon will
win by 22.

Hawthorn v. Carlton
Sunday, 29 July 2001 - MCG 2:10 PM
Last week I did more sitting than Garry Lyon and Lisa from Big
Brother and declared the Hawthorn-Collingwood game would be a
draw, although I did remark no doubt one team would win by 10
goals now. And so it proved, with the Hawks thrashing the
Magpies by 58 points with winners all over the ground.
And so to this week, and this time I am willing to predict a
winner, and this time it's the underdog.
Hawthorn travelled to Princes Park in Round 2 knowing they hadn't
beaten Carlton in 5 years and hadn't won there for 10. They
played inspired football that day to win easily, and I think the
same thing will happen Sunday before a large crowd (hopefully a
record) at the MCG.
On paper Carlton would appear to have a massive advantage in
midfield, with Ratten, Camporeale, Plunkett and Kouta all
prolific ball winners. Add to that the loss of Harford and doubt
over Tony Woods, and the Hawks would appear likely to struggle.
But some unlikely players have stood up in the past few weeks for
the Hawks. Brett Johnson has continued to show promise with his
increased playing time, and Shane Crawford, Daniel Chick and
Rayden Tallis are all in good form.
The big advantage for the Hawks however is their height. Even
without Rehn, O'Farrell and Holland, the Hawks forward line of
Barker, Croad and Dixon willpose problems for Carlton. Add to
that Nathan Thompson, who's ruckwork is improving every game.
Carlton on the other hand have to rely on Trent Hotton and
Merrington to do the ruck duties, with Matthew Allen surely not
fit enough to play senior football yet.
There should be some entertaining match-ups, none more so than
Crawford on Camporeale or Ratten, Joel Smith on Matthew Lappin
and hopefully a rematch of John Hay and Kouta, after Hay gave him
an absolute bath in Round 2.
With a Top 4 spot on the line for both sides, it doesn't get much
bigger than this. But Carlton have really only played 1 good
quarter in the last 3 weeks, and I think their lack of key
position players will hurt them. Their midfield may win more
clearances, but Hawthorn's defence will prove too strong, and the
Hawks will win this game in a minor upset.
Tip: Hawthorn by 23 points
Other Matches:
Richmond by 31 (and the fight will be 0-0 draw)

Adelaide by 55

**********
Sydney v. West Coast
Sunday, 29 July 2001 - SCG 2:10 PM
While the Eagles will be looking to record their 4th win this
season, Sydney are looking to secure a home final. It shouldn't
be too hard with home games against West Coast, Melbourne and St
Kilda in their last 6 games. What will test them is the 3 away
games, against Essendon, the Kangaroos and Brisbane. It is vital
however that they win the winnable games such as this one.
Last week, against Adelaide, the Swans used a tactic of flooding
the midfield and having an open forward line. Jason Ball kicked 5
goals and Kelly 3 while the Swans cruised to victory by 49
points. Meanwhile the Eagles, after getting a 22 point lead
capitulated against Geelong, losing by 70 points.
Back to this weeks game, the Swans will need to keep an eye on
Cousins, the Eagles best player by a mile. The Eagles have far
more players to worry about though including players such as
Cresswell, O'Loughlin, Goodes, Ball, Williams, Nicks etc.
The Eagles could lose Phil Matera with an ankle injury while
McIntosh should return. For the Swans Leo Barry will miss with a
thigh injury which could keep him out for the rest of the season.
Crouch has a knee injury but is supposed to be available.
I'm tipping Sydney to beat the Eagles on Sunday, and beat them
comfortably. The past 2 weeks for the Swans would have to be
their best for the year. Beating Hawthorn at the MCG and then
thrashing Adelaide at Football Park. They are stronger all over
the ground. Their midfield is better - it clearly has more depth.
They have more dangerous forwards and a pretty good defence.
Tipping
Western Bulldogs to beat Richmond by 20 points
Geelong to beat St Kilda by 35 points
Adelaide to beat Melbourne by 10 points
Collingwood to beat Fremantle by 40 points
Brisbane Lions to beat Kangaroos by 20 points
Essendon to beat Port Adelaide by 40 points
Hawthorn to beat Carlton by 10 points
Sydney to beat West Coast by 50 points

though they beat Collingwood a couple of weeks ago. Its really
hard to judge whether that was Brisbane's good form or the fact
that Collingwood are on the way down.
Geelong
Melbourne
Collingwood
Kangaroos
Essendon
Hawthorn
Sydney
Progressive: 89/128 = 69.53%

North by 19
Port by 12
Fremantle by 38
Geelong by 42
Adelaide by 55
Sydney by 36

Sydney v.
