It's no lie that the current Australian test line up is getting on a bit and do we have the young talent to replace them?

Battin most certainly. Bowling we are struggling, but look at mcgrath and co., they just came along out of the blue so im sure we will find something

Shaun Tait will be a star, as will Cameron White. Brett Lee still has five years left in him, so i would say bowling we're going pretty well.

Batting-wise off the top of my head we have Michael Clarke, Marcus North and not much else.

plenty more mate. Marsh, cosgrove etc etc could go on forever. Dont think white will be a star, hes too OK at everything and not great at one. I think cassons the man ur looking for. I know a few state players, and some internationals (through grade cricket) and they rate him the highest. He has 2 wronguns, one is impossible to pick

Josh Mangan from Victoria is going to be an absolute star, definately a class above White. He's 18, and plays 1st XI cricket for Melbourne - probably the toughest club to get a game for. I played against him in the under 18's, and he is phenomenal. Easily the best spinner i've ever faced, and i've faced Cammo before. Cammo is more an Anil Kumble type bowler, probably won't be successful in Australia as he will be on the sub-continient.

im lost man, u said whitey will be a star then he wont be. Yeah mangan and casson, quite a good combo dont u reckon.Casson took 18 wkts in 4 pura cup games last year, not bad i reckon

Cammo will be a star, im not denying that. Yet he will struggle to get test wickets in Australia, as it doesn't suit his style of bowling.

i think he will struggle to be a star if he doesnt take wickets in australia tho. especially with casson, hauritz, doherty, mangon, cullen, simpson etc

This season will be interesting i reckon cos if young players can make a mark, they will be pushed up the list a bit considering the ageing of the test team. Should be good to watch.

I would say we ain't gonna be any better than the Windies' bowling attack if Brett Lee has five years left in him.

Add on top of another expensive bowler in Tait, we're going well? Don't think so.

Not convinced with Whitey's bowling yet.

Yeah, I've said this before and I'll say it again, he's a star in the making. He would be close to getting a game with the Vics in the absences of White at the moment; thats if the Vics don't play 4 quicks. Took 3 fa on the weekend on a flat deck and is miles ahead of Tim O'Brien now, as he was tipped to be the next big thing years back.
Matt Harrison is another to watch out for. From Geelong, he's just a freak left handed bat. Scored tonnes in u19 championships as a u17 and has played for Australian U19 last few seasons now. Struggled last year though but he had troubles with illness in his family.
One more, lol, Michael Hill. He's only 15 or so at the moment but he will go far in his career. Left handed as well. Started playing Subdistrict 1sts when he was 13 years old and played Dowling for Melbourne instead of hatch in his last year of u14. Last season, did well for Ivanhoe in subbies, leading run scorer for the bolters championships with 3 tonnes from 5 digs, and leading run scorer for Dowling Shield as bottom age player. Captaining the Australian U15 side to India and its only a matter of time until he hits the first-class scene. Dean Jones and Neil Buszard rate him as the best batting talent in Victoria since Hodge.

David Hussey, Moss? (not sure his age), White, plenty of good bowlers, the Vics have some great youngsters coming through who could play international cricket. Maybe when the current team goes, the selectors can go as well.

just pointing out that other states other than victoria to exist. Plenty of talent in qld, s.a and w.a. And just cos someone plays 1sts at 13 doesnt mean they are destined for greatness. Believe me.

I agree with the statement that White is ok at everything but doesn't stand out at one thing.

Until he spins the ball more he won't have the same impact as another leg spinner.

Casson is the future in terms of spin. Remember seeing him bowl a couple of years ago and reckoned then that he would be gold. Hasn't done much to change my mind.

Paul Rofe and Shaun Tait looks a very likely combination, and wait to see Aaron Bird when he gets a gig for NSW. That guy can bowl.

Although obviiousbly things can change in just one season, but i think this is the kind of team we are looking at in about 4-5 years time;

1. Hayden (possibly. fit as all ********)
2. ?????
(opening spots are a bit dodgy as Hayden will be very much getting on then, but it wouldn't shock me if he was still around. But i spose with a bit of luck guys like Ben Cameron, Chris Rogers, perhaps Marcus North could move up the order. Maybe even Ed Cowan. Is the area not looking the best though).
3. Ponting (in the twilight of his career)
4. Clarke
5 & 6. two of Marsh/North/D. Hussey/Cosgrove/Watson
7. Crosthwaite
8. Casson
9. White/Cleary/Inness
10. Tait
11. Rofe

obviousbly things can change and players can come on at a younger and quicker age than expected, but that is somewhat an estimation of the team we'd be looking at coming into the season 08/09.....

Inness and David Hussey will NEVER play test cricket for Australia, especially Inness

Tim O'Brien is very overrated, has not bowled well for a good 3 years. Harrison, agreed is an absolute freak, but i think Aaron Finch (also from Geelong) will be better. Both play Premier XI and are destined to play for Victoria. Geelong has an abundance of young talent, with also having Shaun Dean and Lachlan Crawford, both who are stars.

Playing 1st when your 13 might not mean much to you but its not local cricket we're talking about. I didn't just base my post on that. Subdistrict is good standand and someone that young and a batsman as well. Go to resultvault.com and look him up, his stats just say it all. Still young but when he comes back from India, probably set to walk up into Melbourne's 1sts this year and will easily make the Vic U17s side. All this at 15 turning 16 years old. You tell me the last player with all these credentials who has failed to make at least state cricket?
I do also rate Finch as well but I've only seen him once, looks a class act. Geelong had a good Dowling program and have set them up well for the future but the new program might change it, doubt it though.

we know there are states outside of Victoria but with alot of states having older teams we dont know the young talent in other states. I just hope that Crosswhaite or some other keeper comes through so Haddin isnt the future keeper.

Homer
5 Oct 2004, 09:09
We have Chris Hartley up here, so Haddin will be hard pressed to be the next 'full-time' keeper.

Mitchell Johnson
Scott Brant
Nick Kruger (Maybe the solution to the opening problem, very similat to Hayden)
Chirs Hartley (just mentioning him twice, to get his name out there)
James Buchanen (John's son, has been flying in grade cricket, very long shot)

More later, when I actually have a legit think about it.

When Australia go though the inevitable changing of the guard, there will be a drop off in team performances from previous years. It's going to happen whether we have the talent or not. Hopefully the selectors get it right and choose the right players at the right time to minimise it.

Look for Shaun Marsh to have a good year, Was lucky enough to catch him batting on the weekend for Fremantle. Played one of the best innings I have seen in some time and ended up with 141 not out. Just seems to have matured as a player.

Where did you play? Where do you play now? Did you come up the pathway system and play nationals and captain the national team?

At the moment, Crosthwaite is looking the goods with two decent scores in the practice games on the Gold Coast at the moment. You'd think at least he will be in the starting ING Cup side.

I played 1st grade in W.A, and played for western australia junior teams. There are countless guys that play high level cricket and decide to stop playing for certain reasons
