View Full Version : Smoke and Mirrors

This trading period is just smoke and mirrors.
For example, on one hand, we hear that Kangaroos are moving heaven and earth to get Ottens (refer AFL website and comments by Greg Miller) while Dean Laidley on SEN seems to be saying that are not really in the race.
I dont think you can believe anything said on any of the boards until the deal is actually done. Every person seems to be saying something different.

Greg Miller is a genius!!
Channel 10 news just had him saying the Kangas are in the 'lead' for Otto at the moment, then Dean Laidley comes on and says 'Where does Greg Miller come up with this stuff!!??'
Trade period is like a big game of Poker. You can bluff all you want, but the cards will always have to be revealed in the end!!!

and now it is reported that Ottens will not go to Kangaroos.
Who do you believe?
If it is true that he doesnt want to go to Kangaroos, I think Richmonds bargaining power will be significantly reduced.
I can see it panning out. The deal will be concluded just before cut off and we will end up accepting pick 16, 32 and Corey Enright.

This outcome has always been on the cards and he's made no secret of it.
No doubt thompson and ottens have had coversations on maintaining a hardline on he's preffered choice, knowing that richmond will probably be forced to accept a deal similar to the one geelong has already outlined.. although there may be some room for ammendments by weeks end.
North would offer the best outcome in terms of drafts and or player but if ottens refuses outright, and push comes to shove my guess is we'll accept geelongs offer rather then the risky propostion of allowing him to go into the psd. Despite what miller has said about re-drafting him.... well it wont happen.
Exactly right boys it is like a game of Poker. Wallace and Miller had us all a little worried but Ottens has just played a big hand. It's a strategic masterpeice that could have saved my club planty
Ottens can not be forced to play for North or Sydney. If he's said no then thats it! You can not force him.
Ottens can simply say trade me to Geelong or I'm going to Collingwood for nothing in the PSD. Richmond won't re-select him. Hawthorn can't afford him unless the get rid of Thomo, Hay or Crawford (which they wont) either can the Dogs so that leaves the Pies. Managers and players aren't dumb the know exactly what clubs have left in their salary cap.
I'd reckon Ottens would be pretty happy with that. Collingwood would be most players second choice. Plenty of dough and state of the art facilities. Most of all he has a say in his future. He doesn't get treated like a peice of meat.
All of a sudden the heat is on Miller and Wallace.

The heat has always been on those two. I don't care what anyone says, its their jobs to make sure that we get something for Ottens. As for the heat, surely another key forward will not slip from Geelongs grasp again this year?

I see it differently actually, Ottens doesnt get much say in it at all otherwise its a manipulation of draft rules the only thing Ottens has in his way is an asking price and unless he states a ridiculous value it will be unlikely.
And if he puts a 500k asking price on his head Collingwood wont have that free in their TPP the only sides that do would be Geelong, North and Sydney.
In saying that Ottens has never said he doesnt want to go to Sydney. He has only said he would prefer to play at Geelong, means diddly squat really at the end of the day.

Ottens has no say in who takes him in the PSD, but he has to consent to any trade.
If he nominates for the PSD he won't get passed Hawthorn, they'll find the cash somehow. Even the Dogs might get the AFL to stump up the cash for them.
Great time of year isn't it :)

so considering north have a pick before Sydney or Geelong in the PSD and have the cash they could still pick him up even after he has said he doesnt want to play there? thats if he gets that far in the PSD.
I'd be pretty excited if I was a dogs supporter LOL
Or Miller could ruin his career and pay him his asking price with our 1st pick in PSD and dump his @rse into coburg for a year playing off the bench LMAO
Dermie said that Hawthorn would need prior warning to get Ottens. No way they could fit him in with their current situation. Said it was highly unlikely that they they'd be able to free up 450K in half a day. Didn't know if Ottens was worth it anyway
They'd have to firesale on Friday to do it and they won't after last years embarrassment. The Dogs have no chance so it would be Coll. Dan Richardson would know for sure he'd end up there. Hence today's statement

why would the dogs have no chance in the PSD to pick Ottens up for nothing? please explain
Because if he went into the PSD he could nominate the amount he gets and the length of the contract so he could easily price himself out of the doggies reach. I really, really, really, really don't want him to go to Collingwood, not unless we got about 4 first round picks in return.
