View Full Version : NSW players save the day - so who makes way for Ponting?
Good to see NSW players leading the way again, even playing up the order or on debut.
Which one of the other 4 batsmen will be dropped on Ponting's return?
Clarke will still go unless he makes a big double. Lets not forget he is still only on 76. Nobody from the regular team deserves to dropped so no changes will be made. Great first up innings but he is just going to have to wait.

Martyn needs runs. He looks lovely when on song but does not go on with it. Not many hundreds, lots of 30-50's. He does not seem to realise it is not how but how many. When Boof makes way for Hodge (between now and the Ashes) we will be close to having the best top 6 available...

I'd say Clarke is 95% sure to be dropped, 5% Martyn. Love made a century in his last innings, didn't save him.

clarke has been picked so he can play for australia for 10 years.

has to be Marto, Clarke has cemented himself in the team after today, the public will go nuts, and i think his parents too, if he is dropped. He adds a lot more to this tem that Marto ever will. He has to go, get back to the Domestics and prove his worth for another 7 years.

hopefully dropping clarke would make him hungrier, although there is a risk it could make him disillusioned.
this is a really hard choice and i'm not going to play selector for this because there are up sides and down sides to dropping both martyn and clarke.
Clarke in for Boof: Walters
October 7, 2004
DARREN LEHMANN should make way for Michael Clarke when captain Ricky Ponting returns from injury, according to Test legend Doug Walters.
Clarke, 23, became the 12th Australian to make a hundred in his first Test innings early on the second day of the opening match against India in Bangalore today.
Comparisons between the Sydneysider and Walters have abounded since the stylish Clarke burst onto the first class scene for New South Wales five summers ago.
Walters suggested middle order batsman Lehmann - nicknamed Boof - be dumped for Clarke on Ponting's expected return for the third Test this month.
"He's a very good player – has been for a long, long time – and it's taken the selectors, unfortunately, a long time to find him," Walters said of the young tyro on Sydney radio station 2KY.
Lehmann, 35 in February, made a scratchy 17 in Australia's first innings but his spot should be safe having scored 571 runs at just under 52 since the last home summer.
Ponting is the only regular batsman in the Australian team in his 20s and he turns 30 on December 19.
Walters thought it could be time the Australian selectors to move the entertaining South Australian left-hander along.
"You can't consistently keep on dropping 37, 38-year-old blokes from (the team) and replacing them with 36-year-old guys," Walters said.
"I've got nothing against Darren Lehmann, I think he's a fantastic player.
"He's done a fantastic job for Australia, but the way he batted yesterday, I think his (Test career) might be short lived."
Walters and Clarke share an obvious affinity.
Both have been blessed with exquisite timing and an array of shots, and their dream debut knocks against Australia's biggest rivals of the day are eerily similar.
In December 1965, a 19-year-old Walters from the NSW town of Dungog made an immediate impact by scoring 155 in the opening Test of the Ashes series in Brisbane.
He had come in at No.6 with Australia teetering at 4-125 and guided the home team to a first innings total of 6(dec)-443.
Clarke entered the fray yesterday at 4-149 after a mini-collapse and showed immense composure to push the tourists towards a 400-plus total.
National selector Allan Border felt vindicated by Clarke's performance and said he was a better player than his modest first class statistics suggested.
"I think this kid offers something special, forget the stats there is just something about him," Border said before the start of play today.

I would suggest martyn because he doesn't play against spin aswell as boof does.

Should he really be dropped?
No he shouldn't but boof plays spin better. When we come back to australia, drop boof and bring back marto.

Stop being so ridiculously stupid. Boof saved our asses in Sri Lanka a number of times, and has the spot sewn up as long as he wants it.

Additionally there's no way they're going to drop the VICE-CAPTAIN.
Some of you need to think before you make your comments...
Im all for boof playing against spin. But martyn doesn't deserved to be dropped either. Boof plays the 3rd test (when ponting is back) and if he does well keep him for the fourth. If he stuffs up bring back martyn.

Those who say martyn should be dropped clearly do not understand cricket nor did they watch the recent series in sri lanka

I did watch the series in sri lanka. Boof also got 2 centuries. I don't want either to be dropped, but if we were playing in australia i would say drop boof, but were playing in india im gonna say Martyn. But if boof performs badly in the 3rd test, bring back marto for the fourth.

True... averaging 52 in his last 11 innings.
True... averaging 52 in his last 11 innings.
Averages from last 5 matches. (all sri lanka)
Batting:
Martyn - 53.60, 2 hundreds, 2 fiftys.
Lehmann - 55.40, 2 hundreds, 2 fiftys.
Bowling:
Martyn - DNB
Lehmann - 17.83, best 3/42.
Obvious choice is Boof, cause he has the ability to come in and take wickets.

Could Martyn open?
But Langer just got another scatchy 50…….hmmm. Sure glad im not a selector!!
NO way. Langer and Hayden have cemented their spot as one of the greatest opening partners in the game. They got another 50 run partnership together. That option wouldn't even be considered for a nano-second.

Get rid of Martyn, never looks comfortable playing against quality sides, which is when you need all your batsmen firing. Not enough ticker for the sub-continent.

Hayden, Langer are safe in the opening spot. Langer held it together when the guys at the other end were getting out. Martyn and Lehmann are rock solid at 4 and 5. That leaves Katich and Clarke fighting it out for a place in the team. It's a fact of life in the current Australian team that several players not making the squad would average 50+ in test cricket if given the chance.
Selectors are really in trouble if they need two spinners in this series, which bowler can you drop? Fortunately for them the current bowling combination has worked beautifully.
Clarke is just going to have to wait when Ponting comes back. Ponting could be a while though, broken bones dont heal overnight.
Ponting is out for at least the second test. So the next couple of innings are going to be important in determining who get the spot.

Test innings over the last 12 months for Martyn, Lehmann, Katich. Hayden, Langer, Ponting and Gilchrist won't miss out so there's no point mentioning them.

In the 7 innings they've all played, Lehmann top scored 3 times, the others 2 each.
I thought it was very responsible of messrs Martyn and Lehmann the way they batted in the 1st dig with a guy who's played in 10 tests up one end and a guy making his debut waiting to come in
They wanted to see clarke bat. Jus like the rest of australia.

Good to see the patrons of Bigfooty have returned to the Martyn bashing. It's lucky for him that that Australian selectors don't share the views of many on this board.
Clarke is Ponting's replacement and, like it or not, he will make way for Punter when he returns...
Maybe we should keep martyn....He is the only representitive from Darwin(atm). Maybe we should keep australian interests in cricket national.

Geez that's a stretch
he was born there but the vast majority of his development came from the WACA
But it's like aussies with actors. Some dude coulda been born on a plane over australia and 1 day later he moved to america and hasn't left there ever. Yet to us he will be an aussie. So the Darwin people will consider martyn, theirs.

Jus saying that Darwin consider Martyn their boy. So it could be of best interest of the expansion of australian cricket to keep a wider interest in australia.

Its more to do with the fact that Ponting desperately wants him to remain in the side. Bit like Steve Waugh with Brett Lee and Matthew Hayden and Justin Langer before the latter 2 cemented their spot.
Out of Clarke, Katich and Lehmann, clarke will go unless he makes a huge score.

You knob. Boof is in his prime. He is utter class.
Langer cant be dropped. How could you brake up the best opening pair in the history of the game?
Martyn would walk into the world 11 imo. He is such an elegent bastsman, best seince Mark Waugh. He had a really ********e period but hes had a great last 18 months or so.
Boof is just awsome. He is not too old. He is now at his best.
Katich has been great.
In reality i beleive Lehmann will be dropped, which is just not the right choice. Clarke should go. I hate to say it becasue i beleive he has the potential to be as good as Hayden or Lara. He will dominate world crciket for 15 years and captain Australia.
