View Full Version : Football payments
Who is the best paid player you have heard of in the local/bush/SANFL/QAFL/ACTFL/WAFL/VFL (not AFL players such as David Bourke playing as a punishment for being crap), and any league I have not mentioned?
What are some of the funniest match payments you have heard of eg payments in lieu of money, 2 hours in the local brothel for BOG.
I heard Mark Armstrong is being paied $80,000 for playing-coach at Queanbeyan (ACTAFL)

I heard that Jock McGregor down here in the AFLST was on $20,000 as a player coach for Hobart. I am not sure about other payments down here, some aren't really that big.

he's not worth 20 grand.

That's what I thought, but it would seem he was getting that, anyways, he's making new enemies...err friends down at Huonville.
Jock McGregor was on about $17k at Hobart, and is on about $19k at Huonville Lions.
Tassieswan's right, he isn't worth it. May have a fair coaching record with premierships at Kermandie and Hutchins, also got Hobart to a grand final, but his record of destabilising clubs and playing lists is legendary.
Sandy Bay, Southern Cats, Kingston, Kermandie and Hobart have all fallen victim to it in his playing or coaching days.
We gave him a real chance at Hobart, despite what we thought of him in previous years, but he hadn't changed.
Back to the topic, there's been plenty of bush telegraph over the years in the SFL of odd player payments. Strong rumour from large numbers of different sources were that Kermandie were paying some of thier players with dope in 2000. Kermandie were already in breach of the salary cap apparently, but still got away with it.
Dodges Ferry was another club mentioned in dispatches a couple of years ago. Not sure wether its true or not, but the sheer number of people making mention of it......where there's smoke there's fire
One that is a definate, is North Hobart Football Club in 1996 in the TFL, were paying thier players with beer vouchers from thier social club, as they had
absolutely no money to pay players with. They got into severe difficulty during thier glory years of 1987-1993 in rediculous payments to players and the building of thier new NHFC Social Club in the back of the Horrie Gorringe Stand at North Hobart, and couldn't meet payments.
A couple of years ago they lost the building to AFL Tasmania, who walked in, bought it and kicked North Hobart out of it. In turn they turned it into AFL Tasmania offices and a bar room for the Devils.

Yeah righto, but AFL Canberra is still a good standard of football. It's state level football, so there is obviously a bit of dosh in the system for both players and coaches.
With the added bonus that there is not a salary cap. I think that, it is cr*p that someone like armstrong (good but not fantastic) is on $80,000 a year with an AFL Canberra club. That plus his salary from being a teacher, that adds up to being around $140-$150,000 a year. Crazy.

Gerard Bennett and Clinton King are both on 50k for South (at least 20k over value but South have a tradition of overpaying players and faltering).
They offered Cicolella 62k but the latest is he's staying with the Eagles as he has an outsandingcontract.
Waterhouse wanted 2k a game for North but as our current highest paid players are in the 20-30k region that was thought to be a tad unreasonable, I'd say he'd be on a lot less with Port though as they're broke.
West have also overvalued players in recent years but not to the degree South has.
I heard ex Geelong player Paul Lynch was getting $40,000 per year for coaching Lara in the Geelong Football League. I only hear that but it is probably not to far from the mark.

I remember Mark 'Jacko' Jackson got paid a few grand per game to play for Kedron in the QAFL a few years back...the jacko show atracted a few thousand thru the gate...I think he ended being suspended for something like 10 weeks after his first of three planned cameo/ exhibition appearances..

I've heard Stephen Paxman was on $40,000 at Greenvale in th EDFL.
I personally think Paul Grayling (east ringwood and ainslie fc) is the best non AFL player i have seen play.

well those numbers being bandied around would support a club in Sydney for a season,so very far off the mark up here, but i was told that Troy Luff was on about 40k at Balmain.whether its true or not is another thing.also when G Ablett was trying to be coaxed to Campbelltown, his asking price was near equivalent to Nauru's national debt!

I think the problem with playing for money at a local level is that clubs struggled to attract players, so they have to wave great big bags of dosh around. Players who move from club to club just so thay can make a bigger pay packet shows no passion or heart. Sticking with one club for your whole career and not playing, that passion/ heart rolled into one.
Money and player payments are ruining local/ country football.

I agree with your sentiments but when you're involved like I am with a club that can't/won't pay blokes to come and play for them and you finish up at the foot of the ladder year after year, it becomes a real issue.

Wedgie, although Westies have overpaid players at times in the past, I think you'll find that they had the lowest salary cap payments of any club last year. How South and Centrals stay below the cap is obviously due to creative accounting.

Sorry, not my place to divulge that, but the club is these days rewarding loyal players with higher wages as opposed to recruits who might only stick around for a year or 2.
Centrals have had a similar pay structure and Norwood are working that way too.

i can tell you right now, bennet is on more then 50K more like 80K from wat my sources say
I get my 30 dollars a week petrol money to come home to play... lol
I know a couple VFL boys who left mid year to go play up in the bush they where only 19-20 and they where getting 500 a game. Times that bye 20 and a 19 yr old local footballer is on 10k for the season that is a joke.
Ryan O'conner at Coburg is on about 18k for the season and i know Robbie Lee who was at sunbury was on 1200 a game.
cheers

Correct weight! At least you blokes have got the RAAF base at Richmond to recruit decent players from, all we've got is the biggest junior Rugby League competition in the world. Might as well be in a foreign country for all the football talent that lives in our neck of the woods. No wonder we can't win a game!!

Manly don't pay players anymore. They might have back in the mid 90's but they had real local talent like Jacko, Zoots and Robbo.
My first year was 99 when we won the 1st 15 games of the season and our closest win was beating Penrith at Greygums by 1 goal..we went to Gipps Road and the cover of the record had "Can Manly stay undefeated?" Nup we lost and then went out in straight sets in the finals.
Then they lost their major sponsor and went to the bowling club next door for sponsorship and got virtually zero. The club said "if you bring your players here and drink here we might think about increasing it"
In 2002 they got sponsored by the DY RSL and then in 2003 the DY RSL cancelled most sports sponsorship apart from the local RL comp and Manly had to go back to the bowling club and were back to crappy sponsorship money.
Desie....footy on the Northern Beaches gets screwed as much as your boys do in the west, but at least Manly seem to get half decent players coming to the club each season as when they move from Vic, SA, WA they seem to move to the Nth Beaches.
I can;t see them competing with the Uni's for a long time.
BTW, what happened to Mac Uni last year...they were woeful.....?

I think I recall the game to which you're referring although I was o/s at the time. Jason Boneham kicked 12 goals out of 15 in a losing side in what was probably the best single performance by a player in the club's history. We did have quite a good side back then.
Unfortunately blokes who move here from interstate and make up the vast majority of good players running around in Sydney do so through work and certainly don't settle in the outer western suburbs. We also don't have the benefit of having a Premier Division club up the road where we can pick up guys who are looking to drop down a notch. Having said that, we all have our problems and we're by no means the only ones that struggle.
As for Mac Uni, they may have been woeful but they beat us twice so we're hardly in a position to hand out advice!!
