View Full Version : Lehmann - did I miss something?
I noticed in the last Test the Lehmann cheer squad continually sniping at Clarke for taking his place - Lehmann should be playing, Lehmann would have done better etc etc etc.
Now correct me if I'm wrong, but Lehmann wasn't dropped, was he? The reason he didn't play was because he has one less working hamstring than everyone else in the team?

Lehmann was injured.

a lot can happen between now and the first test
maybe the sub continent heat was getting to lehmann
perhaps his comments about stepping aside were uncharacteristic, like his "****** black *****" comments

Didn't Lehmann just win a cricketer of the year award?

Expected by who? Whinge about it when it happens.
The next series is only a couple of weeks away anyway, he's unlikely to be fit in time.

Clarke should stay either way you look at it and if its at the expense of lehman well so be it although i'd seriously consider dropping Katich.

Was named as 1 of Wisdon's cricketers of the year I think.

IF katich hadnt scored 81 in the 1st test, me may have not won the series. We more than likely would have been rolled. Katich is a star.

You know OT a bit..but Lehmann should have said he was talking about our flies..annoying F**** black F***** they are.. :D
It will be interesting to see which way they jump..everyone apart from Hayden made some sort of contribution so you couldnt build a great case for anyone..I think Clarke should stay on form AND age..I am a Redback and Lehmann fan but I think he could be in trouble as regards to selection

Didn't Lehmann just win a cricketer of the year award?Wisden cricketer of the year means nothing. They have a rule where a player can't win it twice meaning that often the top 10 crickers for a given year have already won it. It's a joke of an award and not taken seriously.
Clarke is a very good player but how Cocky is he! Talks as if he's been in the team for years.
He's gotta earn & wait for his spot like Hayden, Lehmann, Langer & Marto did in the early Years!!
Clarke should play ahead of Lehmann no doubt in my mind after his performances
If Lehmann is fit though in Brisbane and Adelaide he should play ahead of Katich
If he fails there, then it could be the end of his career, and there is no bigger fan of Boof than me.

No no, you're the tool. Did you forget the 151 Clarke made (on debut) and the hundred Gilly made, I think we would have been rolled if these two guys didn't score these runs.
Katich should be dropped if Lehmann is fit. Either way Clarke must stay in the team. ;)
tough call for the selectors to make.
tough call for the selectors to make.
Very tough. In the past, selectors have been willing to make the tough call with a view to the future (eg M Waugh). Against that, Lehmann's form prior to India was fine.
Have a look at the age of some of our batsmen:
Hayden 33
Langer 34 later this month
Martyn 33
Lehmann 34
Also Gilly (33 next week)
Gilly's said he hopes to stay til the next world cup, but we need to make sure there's no mass exodus in a couple of years time. Ponting, Katich and Clarke will be around for a while yet - we need to get as many tests as possible into Katich and Clarke as possible before we start injecting further blood into the lineup.
I'm about 80% sure they won't pick shrek, even if he's fit, and looking to the future i think this is the right call to make. If they do pick him, it may only be for the series vs NZ -which, as a best of 2, has little margin for error and he could be seen as a more dependable option than Clarke or Katich.
ps. can't believe he's only played 23 tests...

******** off Homer
Lehman is one of the greats of cricket and would stand up and perform under pressure. What if it didnt rain on the last day of the 2nd test? Then we lost the last and not won the series. Why didnt the wonder boy stand up and make runs in the last test when it counted? Clarke made a few runs in the series but the question must be asked, who would you rather coming in at 3/50 chasing 250+ on the last day? I would want experience, skill and someone who has stood up when it is required before, Lehman
Lehman still has a yr left in him, should be brought back in. Hate Katich but he wont get dropped. Clarke needs to wait another few months and get some runs under his belt for NSW and in the ODI and wait for another opportunity because in a yr or so he will have the spot for life. Whats another 12 months for a 12yr career to start?

Well Done Vics I totally agree with everything you have just said. He must wait.
For all the crap the Selectors have dealt to Lehmann over the years the least they can do is let him finish on his own terms.
Some Rep points coming your way :D

We won the series 3-1 instead of 2-1? Who knows?

I hope Lehmann is still around for the Ashes. That is my only thought on the matter. Clarke clearly deserves the spot.

As great a batsman as Lehmann is, he's not really performing in the test team. He's making a lot of starts, but not going on with them.
If he were to be dropped at least he would be replaced by an up and coming star, rather than another aging talent.
Lehmann's poor attitude towards training would also contribute to his ousting.
I'm a big fan of Boof, but the time comes where a turnover is necessary. Rather than whinging about it, how about we all appreciate the talents and performances of Michael Clarke.

Oh yes. A lot of starts. That's all he did in Sri Lanka, you know, where he was our best batsman and stuff? Scored two big hundreds in 3 tests to go with a 50 when we collapsed for under 200 in the first Test? Yep, just doesn't go on with it, does he?
Oh, yeh, and then three 50s in four innings against Sri Lanka when they came here...really just didn't go on with it did he"? WELL NEITHER DID THE REST OF THE TEAM.
Oh, and in India? If my mum was dying and I was rushed over with no match practice, I reckon I might have a difficult couple of Tests as well. Then he saves us in the Third Test in partnership with Marto...yet people still want him dropped.
Disgusting and what a betrayal. He has TWO bad Tests and people are willing to forget all the good work he's done this year...yet they continue to support the likes of Martyn, Langer, M Waugh, S Waugh, etc who've had far worse form troughs.
Should we drop Hayden? He had a shocker of a series as well. His high score was even less than Lehmann's? Too many starts...not going on with it...
The old three into two dilemma.
I'd take Clarke and Katich with an eye to the future into the Brissy test. However, is got a feeling the selectors may ax Simon in favour of Lehmann.
After his debut series, Clarke is untouchable right now.

Bad day at school champ?
Why didn't anyone stand up in the last innings? Queenslanders Hayden and Hauritz were the highest scorers. Everyone deserves blame for the failure, not just Clarke. He made 400 runs in his debut series, the kid has talent now and still has potential for later. Lehmann was held out for too long as a youngster, so history may repeat itself.. But Clarke picks himself surely. Lehmann was poor in India until his last dig. Katich was consistent and very handy. But Lehmann was sensational in Sri Lanka. Its a hard call, but last in = first out would be a shade foolish now. Lehmann is a champ, we all love Boof, so Katich may be the man to go, but still, he'd be remarkably stiff!
If Warne doesn't come up... Is it possible to run 7 batsmen, a keeper and the three pace men? Lehmann, Clarke, Katich and Martyn can fill-in... Just an idea...

History cant repeat itself with Clarke, Lehman and half the side will be retired within 2 yrs therefore leaving Clarke at 24? 25? Still 10-12 yrs left in him
If Lehman goes then it shows the NSW bias at its greatest, S.Waugh, M.Waugh, M.Taylor all had long, lean runs yet never got dropped and eventually broke out of it. Now Lehman will be retired in near career best form? ********ing stupid
Doubt Aussies would go with 3 bowlers as if Kiwis get going and bat for a long time, Katich, Clarke etc cant bowl long spells like a spinner can
Since when as a fill-in batsman ever secured his spot by a good series and pushed out someone else who is in good form? Why should Clarke?
Clarkes series should be seen as his test, he passed now he needs to wait for the spot to open up, not seen as the start of his career in international cricket and the retirement of a great
