The President of the North Hobart Football Club, GUNNS North Hobart Demons, Mr John Leedham, publicly announced today the implementation of an annual award to recognise, pay tribute to and acknowledge the outstanding leadership provided by former Premier the late Jim Bacon.
Mr Leedham said that Jim Bacon had served the North Hobart Junior Football Club as a coach and later President. He was awarded Life Membership of the NHJFC in 1988 for his outstanding service.
Jim also served a period as committeeman and later President of the North Hobart Football Club coterie group THE TRIDENTS.
During the 1980’s Jim was also a member of the club’s Building Committee. The work of the committee culminated with the building and subsequent opening of the NHFC Social Club in 1991 at the North Hobart Oval. He joined the Board of the club in 1989 (a premiership year under coach Garry Davidson) as Football Director. He later served the club as Chairman of the Board.
Although Jim had a busy schedule when elected to Parliament, he still found time to support the club. Jim was a Vice Patron and Platinum Demon member for a number of years. During recent years Jim also hosted the annual SPECIAL EFFORT DINNER. He actively supported the club for a period of twenty (20) years.
Mr Leedham said the annual award, to be named JIM BACON MEMORIAL AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP will be made to an Office Bearer, Board Member, official, volunteer, coach or player of either the North Hobart Junior Football Club, North Hobart Tridents or the North Hobart Football Club for outstanding leadership during the previous 12 months.
Mr Leedham said the inaugural award is to be made in 2005. A selection panel to comprise 5 people, including a representative from each of the North Hobart Junior Football Club, North Hobart Tridents and North Hobart Football Club, will be appointed early in 2005.
