......by saying that we wouldn't have won if Hird had played out the game. Seeing as though we were in front when he got injured, and in front at the end as well, I don't see how this can definitely be the case.
Or was he just being nice to Essendon on purpose, to further screw with their minds?

I think he (Elliott) was being honest. Not that we need Hird to win (we won 18 H&A games in 1999 without him), but in the context of Sunday's game, and the way it was panning out, Hird was proving to be the difference "AT THE TIME."
Not that it matters now.

John Elliott is a legend of the Carlton football club, talked to him a few times at the footy as well, great bloke ...
I'm rapt we cheated to screw Essendon out of another flag in 99, although we got penalised heavily, if we didn't the Bombers would be on 17 flags by now ...
