Have answered my own question, this off essendon home page:
Henry Slattery (West Adelaide - selection 46) - A medium midfielder / defender with good hands and neat skills. He was a South Australian under 18 representative in 2004. He is 183cm tall and weighs 82kg.
Might be better than i thought
I think has been a successful draft. Needed midfielders and got them

Henry played several games at the end of the season on the wing for West Adelaide league team. Medium height, but neat, excellent skills. Pace is OK, but not real quick, but he reads the game well and is a good decision maker. He should develop into a nice player. Doesn't have to change guernsey colours, either!

You're right, malcolm, he's a terrific lad. He's not a gun, as claimed, but is committed, honest and will keep getting better. Excellent skills. The youngest of four brothers who have played for Westies.

Here's Colin Wisbey's summary from EB&W
Henry Slattery (West Adelaide)
183/82 very top-age, left foot defender/midfielder.
*STYLE LIKE: Banfield
*TRADEMARK:
- Cool, balanced gather and balanced movement through half-back or midfield, then balanced kick downfield.
*HURT FACTOR (Offensive/Defensive/Negative):
- Medium OHF / High DHF/ Low NHF.
*SUMMARY ASSESSMENT, RECOMMENDATION:
- 6' reliable handyman & cleans up after. If Deledio flies jets and Griffen pilots helicopter missions into war, then Slattery is the mechanic they can count on to keep the planes perfectly maintained and spotless.
- Appearance-wise, he looks and moves (not plays) like a mini version of a young Alister Lynch.
- Not at all spectacular and not a high possession-gatherer but is a genuine footballer. Efficient in getting and delivering. What really special skill or athletic attribute does he have? Nothing. What deficiency does he have that will impede his AFL prospects? Again, nothing. That's what you are buying – an almost plug ‘n play player who may not have the upside of many of his peers but who is reliable, efficient and can be counted on to get the job done. No fuss, no flair, no frustration, few errors, and “ready to wear”. His value is summed up by the Hurt Factor ratings I have denoted for him (see above).
- Is almost too old to play U18s, is only 6’, and is already fairly physically developed. In a draft like this, the shining light for him is his consistency, accountability, ethic and dependability and judgement.
- Played SANFL seniors last 6 games of '04, including West Adelaide's final, acquitting himself quite well. (In their best 3 on debut). Hence he has shown he can mix it at least at that standard.
- My attribute queries with Slattery are relatively minor, given his style of game. A 5cm reach disadvantage compared to the average player of his height, and he appears to be one-sided.
- Has an appealing combination of smarts, handy pace, good balance, good usage and accountability. Has shown he can play across midfield fairly creatively and in defence, even last line, shows good judgement in combining close-checking accountability with attack on the ball.
- Although he has played wing in SANFL, I would like to see him start off in defence. Were he taller, I think he would be ideally suited to AFL HBF, I still think he is probably better suited there than BP but a marking HFF might test him. He could probably play AFL “wing”. In time though, subject to his endurance being right, I think he has the makings of a really good run-with and that’s the role on which I have based my ranking.
- It’s hard to mount a completely compelling case ON PAPER. However I find it harder to mount a case any stronger for most of those who follow him in my rankings. He ain’t special but he makes very few mistakes and is almost plug ‘n play. I rank him quite early at 25 and am quietly confident he will have an AFL career. I would expect him to go late 2nd round to mid 3rd round. Probably ready year 1.
*DISPOSAL:
- Medium OHF, low NHF.
- Very balanced kick. Generally hits his targets, by hand or foot, and his accurate kicks are sharp and hurt. He doesn’t go for “nothing” 15m chips or do floaters.
- Economical, balanced kicking action and good power in his kick. Hard to gauge his range but 50m is no problem.
- Seems to be one-sided. (The only right foot kick I have noticed was a rushed one under great pressure).
- Preference for kicks over feeds but not unhealthily so.
*DECISION-MAKING, SMARTS:
- Is a genuine footballer. Cool, smart. Knows where to go and usually what to do when he gets there. Usually exercises good judgement re when to be accountable and when to attack the ball or run to present an option.
- Is not necessarily a reliably quick thinker but is usually good. Usually shows poise and looks for options.
- Doesn’t make many poor decisions. Strangely, it seems as if, when Slattery’s decision-making does let him down, it is more likely to be when under little or no pressure (based on the games I’ve seen).
- Generally good traffic management. Has a nice sharp 360 out of a would-be tackle when he has no immediate option to feed to. Has a nice side-step. I just wish he would use evasion more often (see below).
- Occasionally has tunnel vision, choosing to kick long to a contest and ignoring handy options in space that he could feed to. This is not a pattern but there are occasional times, under great pressure from an opponent coming at him from the front, when a quick thinker would feed off or evade, yet Slattery rushes a kick off.
- When “tagging”, I like the way, in a run towards play in the direction of goals, he often runs shoulder to shoulder or even fractionally ahead of his opponent, rather than just sweat on him from behind and have to be merely reactionary to his opponent subsequently making the play.
*HANDS:
- Fairly clean off the ground, very clean elsewhere.
*OVERHEAD MARKING:
- 5cm reach disadvantage doesn’t help, especially when you are only 6’.
- Despite that, he takes plenty of marks. He is not a pack mark (he is only 6’) and I’ve never seen him take a speccy, so he is not the “tall” mark type. However, nor is he merely a free-wheeler. He is intelligent in choosing when to spoil, when to wait down, and when to contest, and he is backably reliable in taking the marks he chooses to go for. Very sure hands, excellent judgement, stands his ground, excellent body use and balance. You’d back him to take 8 out of 10 marks where the theoretical odds would look 50/50.
Many of the marks he takes are through cleverly nudging his opponent out with good timing, or launching himself at an angle, or attacking the mark in transit rather than waiting back, or even virtual one-handers body-on-body, etc. I’ve seen him twice take great marks running about 15m at top pace, with the flight, at an opponent, turning at the last moment to mark overhead a ball that initially looked like being a potentially gimme mark for the opponent.
*ATHLETICISM:
- His SS test results, except Beep, were poor to borderline average. However, he was sore at season-end and also seems to be trying to bulk up (his skinfolds were poor) so I’ve taken licence in cutting him some slack re those results. More importantly, when test results don’t tally with what I’ve seen in games, I go on what I have seen.
- The 5cm reach disadvantage compared to the average player of his height is a particular worry in any defence role. Despite that, he manages to be a reliable mark one-on-one and a prolific spoiler.
- If you went on SS times, his pace is borderline for AFL. However, those test times are not representative. I would describe him as “having fairly good pace (at least up to 30m), with quite good acceleration and good closing speed”. He is perhaps not quite as quick over the ground as his arms action makes him look though.
- Will have an excellent build for AFL.
- The word “balance” figures prominently in this profile. He is very balanced – balanced runner, balanced kicker, balanced body-on-body. Smooth mover.
- Shocking SS test result for agility but on-field it is good, including recovery agility. A very slippery opponent (eg Betts) can test him, though not necessarily due to agility.
- I have no handle on his endurance but have seen no reason to query it.
- I also don’t really have a handle on his leap.
*INTENSITY, ETHIC:
- Excellent ethic and intensity.
- Attacks man, ball and marking contests with purpose and intensity.
- Very accountable – not just to his own opponent but also to the nearest. His U18 Champs tackle count doesn’t do his accountability justice. Very effective spoiler, especially glove spoils, including when his opponent is on a lead. Excellent determined attack on the man – ground and air.
- Desperate. Never gives up. Chases hard, blocks, tackles well, throws himself under an opponent to take his legs out from under him, wrests the ball from under packs, etc.
- Routinely runs on hard to present an option.
*CONSISTENCY:
- Quite consistent game by game and throughout a game.
*AFL VERSATILITY:
- At AFL level, I suspect he will start as a HBF. In time, I definitely see him as a midfield run-with. Has already shown this year that he can play midfield or just about anywhere down the flanks at SANFL seniors or U18 Champs levels at least.
*SCI (SCOPE FOR CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT):
- Limited compared to peers. What you see now is likely to be not far removed from what you are going to finish up with. He is almost physically developed and very top-age. Would have been too old for U18s were he born 2 weeks earlier.
*QUERY:
- Limited scope for development (?).
*SOME STATS:
- Stats summary '04 U18 Champs:
Averaged 8 disposals and 4.0 marks in his 3 games. (Best TD 10).

Spent the last couple of years drafting for the future.
This time round we have drafted for 2005 and this boy (not that there is a lot of boy about him) is just ready to play AFL footy.
A backline of Welsh Bradley Slattery has a lot of Hardwick Fletcher Johnson about it.

Thomas looks the goods for an immediate stint in the back pocket position too.
We don't talk much of sending Welsh into midfield coz he's so good down back, but if Slattery and Thomas can produce the goods, maybe there's a chance of Welsh moving up the ground. He certainly knows how to acquire possessions
