Bloody fantastic! We got ANGUS MONFRIES! Have followed him closely in the sanfl. The kid is a gun! We took 3 from the sanfl and being a south Aussie I am over the moon! Henry Slattery, then Paul Thomas, the Magarey Medallist who can play early next season!
Bring on 2005!
I'd say fair enough too Easty

They better not want to go home!
Sounds good but it's all just potential at this stage. I wonder how that Lee bloke will shape up, he seems the most unknown of the lot.
Let's hope they aren't utter garbage.

You'll surely like Paul Thomas...
Our first Magarey Medallist in 15 years, SANFL representative 2003 vs. WAFL and dual Centrals Premiership player in 2003 & 2004. Good pick up there.

Slattery was a fine pick up aswell. I have seen him play some SANFL footy and he looks the goods. 18yrs old, 180cm/80kg and is physically quite sound and has good foot skills. He played at least 6 or 7 senior games for West Adelaide which included finals experience. Sort of reminded me of another Essendon player - Gary O'Donnell, in the way he moves etc etc.
Hope that explains him a bit better.
Good drafting by the way, Monfries was keenly sought after by the crows.

You're right, Damien, he does remind me of Gary O'Donnell.

Anyone tell me if Slattery is quick!

You Essendon folk are gunna be LOVIN these SA kids. Slattery is just as good as Russell IMO if not BETTER. Doesn't shank it at all.
Monfries - Should have gone top 10, total steal at 14, really good player, will play AFL next year I'd say.
Slattery - Looks exactly like Gary O'Donnell. Better give him his old number, total clone. If he is half as good ull be happy but has top foot skills and tries hard.
Thomas - Well Im spewin he is leavin centrals but stoked he gets his chance in AFL to prove himself. Should slot right into the HBF no probs from round 1.
Dashing half back, top foot skills, good tackler.

great they sound really promising, good to hear from a few South Aussies that have been watching these guys too. Very excited by the sound of Monfries, as much as you can be by potential alone I suppose.
harsh, but fair

I was told today by a scout from a rival club Gus Monfries is Simon Black with a right boot.
I'm excited.
But, can anyone tell me whether Courtney Johns, the bloke we are sticking by through a lot of thick and not much thin, will ever get his act together.
Granted he has had injuries, but my patience is wearing thin.
The Bombers coaching staff must know something I don't.

Apparently, from what Ive heard, Court will be ready to play AFL by about mid season and may start in Bendigo about May.. This was from Harvey a couple months ago.

Looks like we did ok - but as with all drafts time will tell. Good to see we picked up an in and under player first up, and took another tall forward. Interesting to know if he played with Laycock at all in junior footy. Two tassie tall forwards at the one club.
The O'donnell look alike - there was an article in the HUN on sunday about him.
as for Thomas - he is the real interesting one. Went back to Adelaide to watch my mob get pantsed by the U-DOGS, and I have to say I was impressed with Thomas's foot skills. don;t know if he is lightening quick, but it is interewsting Sheedy has got a ready made player for the back line. Would tend to suggest McVeighs time down there is very limited and an on-ball role (permanent) beckons. Looks like we have a very promising mix of midfielders coming through - Winder-dud bettter pull his finger out or its bye bye next year. Or is he the new henneman.
PS - no tall defenders? We are short one or two - have we made a mistake there?

There weren't any high quality tall defenders available, but Lee has spent some time down there and can play at both end's. I think he could easily become our next CHB.

We have drafted well for what we need. Big wraps from friends over in SA about our pick ups.
I can't wait to see how Thomas stacks up and appraently he is keen to get his shot at the big time, but just to keep a lid on everything Ryan O'Connor did win a Magarey Medal too....

Josh Francou won one before he hit the big time though at a similar stage of his career to Thomas.

So did Tony Antrobus ...

Very very happy with the players we got for the 2nd year running. Angus Monfries will be an absolute gun. I saw him play a few games for Sturt in the SANFL finals this year and he looks like a gem and a steal at pick 14. I would expect him to play senior footy next year. I'm also very happy with the pick up of Paul Thomas. I watch him every week playing for Centrals and he just tore the SANFL apart this year. Gives so much dash from the half back lines and also is very tough although he doesn't have the biggest frame in the world. I really think he could slot straight into the league side come round one.

I'm going to have to trust Dodoro and crew with the draft selections, as I know sweet FA about 99% of people in the draft.
But people's reactions seem good, apart from Lee, so I'm pleased with that....
Nuts 'n' Bolts

Yeah I am also very pleased with the selections. We have got a steal in Momfries and I think that we may be able to mould paul Thomas into a valuable second tier player. I think we have to throw Momfries into the deep end next year and see how we go. The young fella was thrown straight from college football for Pembroke into Sturt's senior side and the idea certainly paid dividens. I think if he can do it at Sturt then he might be able to do it at Essendon, similar to a Brent Stanton.
Also we have to be weary of the Rookie draft coming up. It would be great to snare Cara, and possibly James McLeay and Danyle Peacre both from Sturt who may be handy players.

What are Monfries's skills like? Does he just go in and get the thing or does he dispose of it nicely as well?
Couldn't resist bumping this as today seems to be almost a mirror image of what supporters were feeling this time last year.
From the wraps, this year seems a little better. Time will tell.

Last year we were pretty much spot on, with the exception of Thomas (sort-of).
We are even more excited this year, so hopefully that means that the results will be even better! :)

ryder will be a chamion essendon knew if he was available they would take him, indicating they rated him as priority 1. we now have the tall timber and hopefully with the inclusions of heff and campo we'll have incredible midfield depth that can run.
If ryder can be half as exciting as Franklin and half as good as goodes so to speak then we have a real find at pick 7. go dons for 2006

Exactly, and now with Lucy - who I remember reading somehwhere that he was a backman, what position does everyone think that Lee will be groomed for?

Weren't you saying we had plenty of talls and din't want to draft one with our first pick?
Quite a quick turn around.

Lee I hear is also very quick off the mark so we have 2 'potential' KP defenders who wont be exposed for pace.

Lee's agility is fantastic, providing the OP didn't effect it.

I think this is the best we have done in a while.

Lee will be full back i'd say as his speed and ability to move laterally means he's perfectley suited to that spot, the fact that he's not a natural footballer also has FB as an ideal option .
Lucy although he played full back for queensland showed at the draft camp that he has very good endurance to go with his awesome 20m sprint times. That speed endurance fits CHB perfectly. To put it into perspective Nick riewoldt ran a 2.93sec 20m and a 13.13 beep test. Lucy ran the 20m in 2.94 and his beep was even better at 14.2.
Now they are just numbers and dont mean much come game day but at least we know he can go toe to toe physically with most of the better forwards. Kepler couldnt go with reiwoldt, pavlich etc he just wasn't explosive enough, Lucy could be that power defender we have been cryiing out for. Still lets be realistic all these guys are just kids and we'll need a few years to make a valid judgment on where they are heading in their football careers.
